I did a timing belt on one. Owner bought it and brought it in for us to check over. It drove and ran ok but did not have the power I thought it should. During inspection I found the timing belt was cracked and needed replacement. During disassembly I found the old timing belt was one tooth off on one of the exhaust cams. Put it all back together correctly with new parts. Was a completely different car afterwards. Ran just like I thought it should. The owner couldn't believe the difference. He was ecstatic.
So how did the missing timing belt tooth cause the car to loose power? The belt wouldn't slip with one tooth missing. And if the belt slipped, the car would not run at all.

The Dodge Stealth was a joint platform with Mitsubishi 3000GT or the GTO as it was named in Japan. Most folks at that time preferred the cheaper Mitsubishi Eclipse Turbo, which was also a shared platform with Eagle Talon. All four of these vehicles were part of the Diamond-Star Motors joint venture between Eagle, Chrysler, and Mitsubishi. DSM became MMMA or Mitsubishi Motors North America. Eagle was what Chrysler named the then purchased AMC or American Motor Corporation. I know a lot of folks will scoff at 300HP car and not consider that at the time it was manufactured it was a lot of Horsepower for a stock car. The VR4 - R/T Turbo was the GTR of American cars in the 90''s. I was a huge GM Typhoon fan. I test drove one and wanted to buy it but my high school job at the time didn't cover the payments. The Aux port was there for people to plug their portable CD player into the car. At that time. CD players in cars were expensive to implement probably. Most cars had the factory tape deck and had a CD changer in the arm rest, glove box, or trunk.
I have seen you on 3SI back in the early 2000s, and I am so happy to see you are still doing it. I have a 94 VR4 that I have had to park for a long time, and I am getting it back together now. This gives me a lot of motivation. Thanks Jrod.
The aux port was for walkmans an the tv s that where popular for roadtrips i remember having this heavy pos tv that was staticky as can b but we used every road trip for years
You are such a nerd, and I mean that in the best way possible! I really appreciate your knowledge and passion for this era of cars. I am such a fan of the mid 80s - 90s cars and I knew a little bit about this cross platform, but you taught me so much that I didn't know.
Cool video! I remember being a kid and seeing these Stealth’s. I always thought they were really cool. I am in my early 40’s now and my heart is with American Muscle. This video brought back some cool memories, thanks man keep up the good work.
Lots of memories in a stealth/tt my dad had one brand new off the showroom and as a young kid that thing would rippp, my dad would have me shift the car as he drove it. Never forget the time were where leaving sf airport and almost ran out of gas on a bridge lol that back seat sure seemed big back then. His was red with black interior.
My uncle had one in the 90s and it was the first turbo car i ever rode in. Ill never forget it. And the second turbo car i was in was my dads friends GNX.
How the F did i just learn about this channel now?? Yo, your entire garage is full of awesome rides!! I just turned 40 years old so I definitely remember growing up watching all those cars go by me while I'm on my skateboard or bmx.. very cool channel, sick garage and congrats on the absolute dream stealth! *I drive a 1994 Dodge Spirit R/T. 5-speed manual, Mitsubishi 3.0L 6G72 engine and MAN!! So, much fun for cruisin'. Not a race car, but fun.* *I've owned it for 4 years, it has high miles, but I am a mechanic. So, if anything needs work, I do my won work. So far, just maintenance work has been done. Super reliable engine.*
Man, i got to say this car always got an "A" for effort and cool gadgets, but from the sound of it, the engineers forgot the KISS rule of engineering. I remember them to be solid for the first 100k, but afterward, they were a nightmare to maintain. This is the first car I remember requiring the engine to be removed for timing belt replacement. Masive hours for otherwise simple maintenance items because of complex systems.
As I am bring my 94 vr4 back to life what is the best set up for coil overs? Also having a breaks dragging issue that we have been tracking down for over a year.
I’m 37, seeing this makes me wanna drive one again. Am I early 20s I had a 97 eclipse. Also had a 2000 GT with a V6 5speed and that thing was a torque monster from the factory. That car really takes me back.
I worked at a Chicago Dodge dealership as a kid. Drove the all wheel version from time to time. Most of the ones sold were just front wheel drive. Those were nothing special, but the All wheel stealth was legit for its day.
The power of the Mitsubishi 3000GT VR-4 and the Dodge Stealth T/T is identical as the two cars are mechanically identical! The differences were cosmetic. The only thing the Stealth never got was active aero.
No you're remembering it wrong. The VR4 and Stealth turbo were identical. It was in the lower trims where Dodge kinda goofed. The 3000GT was only available with the 24V DOHC 3.0 in either turbo or NA flavor. The base model Stealth brought the 12v SOHC 3.0. You had to step up to the ES or R/T to get the 24v DOHC 3.0. Dodge did this to offer a more economical version of the car.
Regardless they are a birch to work on I have a 94 3000 gt vr4 and a 95 3000 gt tt stealth. But the 90s 300zx is the biggest bitch to replace parts on all are stock besides the stealth has a big turbo and makes 450 hp
Glad I found you 😊… I’m a old school hot hatch guy in the 80’s - 90’s worked at dealerships during that era opened my own import performance shop in 1999 to 2009 … I’m a super geek like your self !
Holy crap!! I absolutely LOVE the Stealths! I had a plastic model of one back in high school. I just LOVE the looks of those cars, NOTHING looked as good as the Stealth did in the 90's! I mean, the Corvette ZR1 was a bad ass in it's own right, and looked amazing, however, it just wasn't as good looking as the Stealth. I so miss seeing those cars out on the road...... An absolute Unicorn, and a beauty
Awesome! A 91 black version of this car is my dream car. I’ve always found the way the headlights on the second gen stealths looked a little weird, so I’ve never paid much attention to them, but this video convinced me that I knew a lot less about these cars than I thought, and the second gens are pretty sweet as well. Gonna try and buy one of these as a project next year, id use it as a daily, but I’m worried about driving it in the snow
Llate 90s I remember a Talon that would show up for cruise night, only import there in those days. Owner claimed it ran 10s and challeneged everyone to run it. No takers. Looked bone stock but it hauled arse.
Very beautiful car. Some sideskirts, front and rear bumper spoilers and a beautiful paintjob is all it needs....and maybe more aggressive black/bronze wheels.
First time I saw this was when I was about 12 years old in summer camp. One of the kids' cousin had a turbo stealth that he brought to the camp. It was super cool.
I always liked these and the 3000gt's from then. My older brother had a fully loaded second gen acura integra around that time while my other older brother (they are twins) had a dodge datona turbo. It was like the battle of the 4cyl. Both cars were super spunky, but the acura was like being on rails in the corners.
I had a 91 and a 94. The 91, I owned for a few years and sold in anger after the umpteenth breakdown. The 94, the rear wheel steering failed 3 days into ownership and I did a slow spinout on the freeway into a fence. But when the 91 ran...fast car that I got to take on Angeles Crest.
I’ve known about them for years. They were a holy Grail back in the 90s, the problem was when we came across was beat. Shit. You need a good specimen that is rare not something you can hump the classified for. Nicely done to see one again.🎉
I’m a diehard GM guy who loves his LTX/LSX engines but I have a weakness for the JDM sports cars from the late 80s and 90s. Like you it takes me back to my childhood days and seeing those cars and all their tech was spectacular to see back then. Everything back then was trying to be futuristic and cutting edge so to see how far ahead they truly were with features like active exhaust from 30 years ago is crazy!!! Half of performance cars of the past ten years now don’t have active exhaust let alone something from back then. They were really on to something 💪🏿🇺🇸🔥🇺🇸🔥🇺🇸🔥✊🏿
@ Thanks for the response big man👍🏿. My favorite JDMs from that golden era are the 3000GT VR4, 300 ZX Turbo and because my best friend had one the FD RX-7. When they’re running properly ( lots of luck with that) the rotary engines are devastating! I saw a guy with a four rotor setup running 9 second quarter miles at altitude when I lived in El Paso. It was as loud as a NASCAR cup car. I’m a GM guy but I respect all well done builds. If you ever come out to SoCal maybe we can get a cruise in 💪🏿🇺🇸🔥🇺🇸🔥🇺🇸✊🏿
We had a Plymouth Voyager minivan when i was a kid, had a Mitsubishi 4 banger in it that would not die! My dad put something like 300k miles on it and we finally got rid of it because the body was rusting & rotting out (lived in the rust belt) but that engine was still rockin'! I remember seeing the Stealth for the first time...and even the tv show, lol. Awesome car, great blast from the past!
I always liked these more than the VR4s. I remember way back when I had my 93 MSB Supra, a guy in my town had a green one of these. It was always a fun run between the two of us.
I loved those cars at the time. Owner of a dealership I worked at had a Black one and I came close to buying it but decided on a ‘97 Cobra instead. Always enjoyed detailing his and driving it though..👍
Another slept on model in this Dodge/Mitsubishi family was the Stratos R/T. I used to cruise around in a 2002 5-speed with only modest intake, exhaust and spring mods. Great understated 2 door.
You might want to add more tid bits like the electronic suspension. There were little servo controlled valves inside the struts. You could push the button and make it a super stiff ride for ultimate handling in these super heavy cars. They weren't sports cars, they were touring cars. The butterfly valve in the exhaust was to make it quieter while touring since it closed off the left side muffler exit and re-routed it through the right side muffler making it double muffled. There was a miniature pump driven off the rear differential that pumped the power steering fluid back to the front reservoir that aided in the rear steer. The valve block above the diff was pilot-operated which is what controlled which direction and when the hydraulically operated rear rack moved the rear tie-rods. There were accelerometers under the driver's seat. Automatic side mirrors were an option in Japan. In Japan they had 14B turbos not baby 9B's all American versions came with. You must have soo much more to add. Do you already have a video on all of these things, as I'm new to your channel? If not, please make one!
..It had 2 intercoolers, an oil cooler, and a power steering cooler, which was very necessary since the power steering pump made really high pressure to be able to operate the front rack and pinion, pump oil through over 100" of tubing to power the rear steer, which creates a lot of heat! Truly way ahead of its time. I had 3, I miss them.
Nice find. I had a white 99 dodge avenger 420a that I turbod with a 5 speed that was a unique car in college back in the day. I bet so many people are confused seeing that on the road. Never even seen a stealth in that good of condition.
I enjoy the video! I always liked these stealths. Remember the first time I ever saw one was around 98 at a car show. I've never heard of the stealth until I saw one in person. Many times I was tempted to buy one, but I couldn't get past the fact that it was a Mitsubishi. We got burned previously by that engine family. It is true that Chrysler used a lot of Mitsubishi parts different vehicles to include radios, the 3 L and 2.5 L version of that engine family, the 2.6 silent shaft 4-cylinder, Mitsubishi turbos on Chrysler's own in house turbo 4s, and badge engineered models. I don't recall Chrysler using any Mitsubishi transmissions (other than on rebadged models). It's worth noting that Chrysler own varying percentages of Mitsubishi during this time frame. As neat as these were, I wish Chrysler during this era would have had at least one coupe (excluding the Prowler)that featured their own 3.5l V6 from the LH cars as they were well made and had much untapped potential.
First time I seen one I remember as well. I was prob 6-7 years old. Passed an all black rt. And I remember my dad talking about it. Then I got the model car version for Christmas
A buddy had a really nice Stealth back in the day. He did a lot of work to it, such a nice car. And they look amazing with a tasteful wing on the back. I've never seen one like this though, I see why you call it a unicorn.
I have completely forgot about the Stealth R/T Turbo. I loved this car when I was a kid. Not sure about the aftermarket today but damn, I wish there were more of these around.
I have owned 3 different 3000gt vehicles and love them all. Some really nice ones over the years that are unicorns. I have the one I boy right after high school that needs TLC, but I have always loved the platform. Transmissions were a problem if you liked hard launches. They did best with roll racing but being AWD that isn’t the bread and butter of the platform. Harder and harder to find parts these days. I will always love the platform
I got spoiled seeing a few of these in the Cleveland area back in the day. Same with the Grand Nash a few years earlier. Great cars the VR-4 also amazing
I always loved the stealth, I was in my late teens and always lusted after one if I could ever find the cash back then. I was a HUGE fan of the Avengers & Probes of those years too, but the Stealth RT/TT was damn near supercar status for us less than rich kids.
I would love to have a modernized version of these cars. I really appreciate the original ones but for my needs I would like to have one with modern features.

In 1996, 315 Mitsubishi 3000 GT-vr4 were sold. The vr4 was twin turbo, twin intercooler, all wheel drive & all wheel steer. I personally liked the vr4 better. Growing up, my father bought a 92 eclipse!
I did a timing belt on one. Owner bought it and brought it in for us to check over. It drove and ran ok but did not have the power I thought it should. @JrodsGarage I didn't get my own portable CD player until I was in high school lol probably around my sophomore/junior year 2001/2002
I did this in my 92 stealth! Loved that feature!
Wow that’s a great buy and awesome find . Congrats 🎉
The CD 💿 Walkman Days 😎👌
I have seen you on 3SI back in the early 2000s, and I am so happy to see you are still doing it. I have a 94 VR4 that I have had to park for a long time, and I am getting it back together now. This gives me a lot of motivation. Thanks Jrod.
Those were the days! I still have the yellow VR4!
Appreciate it. Super passionate about this era
I remember these cars and that version was a complete sleeper. They were tearing up the road and almost nothing could keep up with it.
in the early 2000's I had a 1999 Mitsubishi 3000gt vr-4 and a 1998 eagle talon tsi awd....loved this era of cars!
Epic units
99' NSX Zanadri is a rarer 90s, but cool car. Loved the stealth
An NSX is so far beyond the Stealth, it's not even worth mentioning in the same sentence....
Cool video! I remember being a kid and seeing these Stealth’s. I always thought they were really cool. I am in my early 40’s now and my heart is with American Muscle. This video brought back some cool memories, thanks man keep up the good work.
I loved my 91 tt. Blow off valve on these. *chefs kiss*
82 Dodge Colt .... all Mitsu; that damn thing was so much fun with the twin stick - J turns for the win.
Back in the 90s a neighbor had RT Turbo in red. I had no idea they would go on to be so rare.
I'm subscribed!!
*I drive a 1994 Dodge Spirit R/T. 5-speed manual, Mitsubishi 3.0L 6G72 engine and MAN!! So, much fun for cruisin'. Not a race car, but fun.*
*I've owned it for 4 years, it has high miles, but I am a mechanic. So, if anything needs work, I do my won work. So far, just maintenance work has been done. Super reliable engine.*
You should have had the four-cylinder turbo I had more power than the 3L
Man, i got to say this car always got an "A" for effort and cool gadgets, but from the sound of it, the engineers forgot the KISS rule of engineering. I remember them to be solid for the first 100k, but afterward, they were a nightmare to maintain. This is the first car I remember requiring the engine to be removed for timing belt replacement. Masive hours for otherwise simple maintenance items because of complex systems.
As I am bring my 94 vr4 back to life what is the best set up for coil overs? Also having a breaks dragging issue that we have been tracking down for over a year.
Brake hoses or calpier seals old?
@gordocarbo rebuilt calipers new lines in the wheel wells. Has 3sx abs delete.
I’m 37, seeing this makes me wanna drive one again. Am I early 20s I had a 97 eclipse. Also had a 2000 GT with a V6 5speed and that thing was a torque monster from the factory. That car really takes me back.
Wow only 57 ever made 😮
What about the cobra where is the cobra
In 1996 there were 10002 cobras sold. Not super rare.
I worked at a Chicago Dodge dealership as a kid. Drove the all wheel version from time to time. Most of the ones sold were just front wheel drive. Those were nothing special, but the All wheel stealth was legit for its day.
3000 Gt VR4 twin turbo was better then the Stealth in power but that is where Dodge messed up. Make 2 identical cars. Make them the same power also.
Stealth never had a twin Turbo only the VR4. I've owned both. I grew up working on them as well.
@@lincolnls0416,
Of course the Stealth gad a T/T model, just Google it and you will find out…
Its a truly blessing that you are able to obtain your dream car
Manual climate control is better, bruhhhh..... why you be trippin'?
It’s less stuff to be broken. These cars are a nightmare to own.
The digital climate control is super cool on these. It's a nostalgia thing.
bad taste
Glad I found you 😊…
I’m a old school hot hatch guy in the 80’s - 90’s worked at dealerships during that era opened my own import performance shop in 1999 to 2009 … I’m a super geek like your self !
Birds of a feather!
These are beautiful rides and powerful. Definitely underrated. Think the stealth is more pleasing to look at then it's underpinning! The 3000 GT
WOW! What a UNIT! I love it! ❤
Always loved them. Everyone was always about the Mitsu, but the dodge was the right move. ❤
Awesome car! i have 2 3000GTs glad to find someone with tons of knowledge on these cars!
Was my first car model. Black 91
I had a friend about 10 years ago (older gentlemen) that owned a 96 R/T TT with less than 30k miles, it was a hunter green. I loved seeing that.
So sick bro, what an awesome ride.
As an past owner of a 90’s DSM car (93 Talon TSi) in high school (95-2000), this was the unicorn! ❤
Llate 90s I remember a Talon that would show up for cruise night, only import there in those days. Owner claimed it ran 10s and challeneged everyone to run it. No takers. Looked bone stock but it hauled arse.
@@gordocarbo Subaru SVX
Very beautiful car. Some sideskirts, front and rear bumper spoilers and a beautiful paintjob is all it needs....and maybe more aggressive black/bronze wheels.
First time I saw this was when I was about 12 years old in summer camp. One of the kids' cousin had a turbo stealth that he brought to the camp. It was super cool.
eclipse awd turbo eclipse will clean the stealths clock with a few mods
but in the end you're just driving a sporty economy car
I love the stealth. That platform was so badass.
Super cool car, I'm happy for you finding such a rare and beautiful example.
Nice I always loved the Stealth design 🔥🔥🔥🔥
We had and LOVED a 92 Galant VR4 built to the Hilton by AMS for 10 years! 'Ol 044 is now in the 9's!
I always liked these and the 3000gt's from then. My older brother had a fully loaded second gen acura integra around that time while my other older brother (they are twins) had a dodge datona turbo. It was like the battle of the 4cyl. Both cars were super spunky, but the acura was like being on rails in the corners.
My friends grandma had one. I remember seeing it several times. That spoiler always caught my eye
My sister's boyfriend had one in 1998 when i was in middle school, twin turbo and was the fastest car i had ever been in, incredible acceleration .
Hell yeah I remember when they were new I always love those. Very cool that you got one especially an R/T
Man spot on. All the manufacturers were after the future per say. The most silly electronics and do dads. But it’s what made them epic
If you ever come out to SoCal maybe we can get a cruise in 💪🏿🇺🇸🔥🇺🇸🔥🇺🇸✊🏿
I remember the Dodge Stealth as a cool car that was overshadowed by the Viper! This particular Stealth find is impossible. Thanks for sharing.
Viper? Try anything jdm and DTM 😂
@@hushg2000 Yeah, I forget. The Viper was out of most people's budget. Who would want a Viper anyway when you could get a CRX?
We had a Plymouth Voyager minivan when i was a kid, had a Mitsubishi 4 banger in it that would not die! My dad put something like 300k miles on it and we finally got rid of it because the body was rusting & rotting out (lived in the rust belt) but that engine was still rockin'!
I remember seeing the Stealth for the first time...and even the tv show, lol. Awesome car, great blast from the past!
Heck ya!
I always liked these more than the VR4s. I remember way back when I had my 93 MSB Supra, a guy in my town had a green one of these. It was always a fun run between the two of us.
They was a pain in the butt to load on a carhauler. Remembered when these came out.❤❤
i remember seeing these around the metro detroit area as a kid. always liked em and their kind
I had plenty of these and 3000gts back in the day… 96rtt, 95/96 3kgt vr4 Verts and 99 3kgt… had purples, yellows, green and reds great collectors
96 was the end of high school for me. I remember seeing these things and thinking they were so exotic looking
My buddy had one growing up in NY. It was pretty cool then and it's cool now.
Thanks for video . Nice care . Clean edit 😎
Man, I'd love to see that collection in person! I wanted a Stealth or 3000GT back in the day, too.
It's like an Intrepid front end with an Avenger rear end. I loved them. I had a 97 avenger, wanted the Stealth.
Great cars the VR-4 also amazing
you have cool taste in cars sir, peeking at your stable i saw some gems indeed thanks for sharing with us
Thanks man. If you get a chance we have some other videos of some of then others. Love this era
I always loved the stealth, I was in my late teens and always lusted after one if I could ever find the cash back then.
I was a HUGE fan of the Avengers & Probes of those years too, but the Stealth RT/TT was damn near supercar status for us less than rich kids.
So neat to me. The avenger and the stealth share the tails
I would love to have a modernized version of these cars. I really appreciate the original ones but for my needs I would like to have one with modern features.
Beast Paul walker raced in the end scenes of the first f&f paul went rouge. You would need the tricked out dvd version to see Paul race a FSpyder and take it out on the boost love this video guys
I remember when the Stealth came out. My step dad wanted one. I haven't seen one in person for decades.
I love the 1996 dodge stealth, I owned in 2004 while stationed in Italy 😊
I had a red 91 twin turbo and it was the most badass car at my high school. Got when I turned 16 and I loved it.
How did you afford that at 16?
@gordocarbo and it was a 91 so when I bought it in 99 the price had depreciated significantly I used to deliver pizza and wait on tables and make lots of tips I started working the day I turned 15 weather working permit and by the time I was almost 17 I bought it in my senior year of high school
In 1996, 315 Mitsubishi 3000 GT-vr4 were sold. The vr4 was twin turbo, twin intercooler, all wheel drive & all wheel steer. I personally liked the vr4 better. Growing up, my father bought a 92 eclipse!
“I haven’t had a chance to clean this car, nothin! I did wash it, but that’s about it.”
That’s the same thing! Lmao
Wow what a find I’m so jealous enjoy the car.
Damn even had a rear windshield wiper. That’s a best little feature. They really do help in heavy rain
