  • Florence Nightingale is the founder of modern nursing and a pioneer of data science and medical statistics. Her innovative use of statistical diagrams helped people see just how many deaths were being caused by poor hygiene in military hospitals.
This lecture will look at the importance and legacy of Nightingale’s work, which led to her becoming, in 1858, the first woman elected to the Royal Statistical Society.
A lecture by Sarah Hart recorded on 16 May 2023 at David Game College, London
The transcript and downloadable versions of the lecture are available from the Gresham College website:

A great lecture! Just want to point out that although Florence Nightingale was involved in looking after the injured soldiers of the Crimean War, she never went to Crimea proper. She worked in Scutari, which is in Istanbul, right across the Black Sea opposite Crimea.

It would be nice to see a talk on Mary Seacole who also was a life saving nurse in the Crimea.

16:24 - maybe churchill were remembering this quote, when he said that quantity has a quality on its own.

What a horrible waste of the troops you have have paid to train, feed and transport.
Worse than the sailors dying through lack of fresh food on long voyages.

The troops were drawn from the working classes. They were considered to be less intelligent, sensitive, and important than those of wealthier classes.
Remember in this period even successful people in 'trade' were considered to be socially inferior to people who inherited their wealth over generations. Etc.

When I read that it makes me think that the not-working classes regarded this venture as an opportunity to go on the 'Grand Tour'.

In every war up to WWI more combatants died from disease than died in combat.
