RIP - WILLIAM FRIEDKIN 1935-2023 Thank you for making great movies from your professionalism and workmanship to bring us scares, thrills and so much more. You shall be missed.
Even though this song will always be automatically associated with The Exorcist possibly the most terrifying movie ever made, people need to appreciate what a stunningly beautiful and mesmerizing song it is.This song is suitable to play at Christmas
It yet has a vibes of mistery or melancholy. Like it tries to je a happy melodías but soemthing is behind. Maybe I'm yet biased by the film and it's asociation to horror. But honestly it will work only for a very loud reunión.
True, but if I was doing a movie like that in the 2000s, I'd use Until It Sleeps by Metallica. The lyrics are about cancer but I feel they'd work for what Regan went through.
The Demon (Pazuzu): And I'm the Devil. Now kindly undo these straps. Father Damien Karras: If you're the Devil, why not make the straps disappear? The Demon (Pazuzu): That's much too vulgar a display of power, Karras.
I imagine Ls theme was probably inspired by it now that I've heard this track's opening the similarities are too many to be likely to be a pure coincidence
No - it’s real live musicianship. Every single note on this recording was played by a human being playing an instrument. You need to understand the difference.
Chris MacNeil: "And how do you go about getting an exorcism?" Father Karras: "I beg your pardon?" Chris: "If a person was possessed by a demon of some kind, how do you go about getting an exorcism?" Father Karras: "Well, the first thing I'd do is put them into a time machine and send them back to the 16th century." Chris: "I didn't get you?" Father Karras: "Well it just doesn't happen anymore Mrs. MacNeil." Chris: "Oh yeah, since when?" Father Karras: "Since we learned about mental illness, paranoia, schizophrenia. All the things they taught me in Harvard. Mrs. MacNeil since the day I joined the Jesuits, I've never met one priest who has performed an exorcism, not one." Chris: "Yeah well, it just so happens that somebody very close to me is probably possessed, and needs an exorcist. (she bursts into tears) Father Karras, it's my little girl."
Brilliant dialogue, but honestly I think the third movie did a little better with those monologues. Hearing James Venamune explain how he killed people in such a calm and quiet voice is still chilling

Funny how both movie and Mike got so popular. I tend to think Friendkin used it to illicit tension...he was a Prog fan. I find the whole piece indescribable music. Perhaps it is an original attempt at modern classical music played by a rocker!
its weird how people hear this song and think of the exorcist. like yeah it was in the movie for like 20 seconds. Not even kidding, this song was barely even in the movie. Most of the exorcist is quiet asf
Well I wouldn’t say 20 seconds. In the film there’s at least two scenes where it appears for around a minute, plus it plays over the end credits after the piece Fantasia for Strings. I will agree with you though that the Exorcist is generally a very quiet film, music doesn’t really take centre stage, it’s a little more subtle and understated. This is neither a good or a bad thing, simply the creative choice made. They chucked out Lalo Schifrin’s score for being too dramatic and over the top, you can hear it on the soundtrack album and in the infamously banned “flashing” trailer for the film.

I agree. Such beauty should have never been used for such an evil movie. Its meaning is a complete opposite.

No other song could be the song for the Exorcist. It's a perfect fit.
You're right. But I have to say that I wouldn't have chosen it. That's what probably makes it perfect. It's an unusual choice.

Amen to that, so fortunate to have lived when this was new
