    A great video again. One of the things that I use uphill mig for is to demonstrate to students the idea of more time on the sides, less in the middle to flatten the bead.
    The concept applies across procceses but mig is the one where it comes in handy.
    Another nice thing about uphill GMAW is the better penetration. For your viewers that watch regularly they probably already know. But the thickness limits on a low amperage machine can be increased by changing the position the vertical with uphill progression.
    After a few years of being involved witb welder testing and qc I can tell you that fusion type defects happen less on vertical joints than flat. Provided the bead shapes are good when you fill in the joint.
    Thanks for what you do.

    For the guy who asked about cons on the z weave. Typically the wider your weld face the more stress and distortion you are imparting on your work piece. Lots of first year welders coming out of school love big fat weave caps not fully understanding the stresses they are imparting just thinking of how fast it is. Also you increase your HAZ (heat affected zone) with that one big fat weave where as with stringers or a split-weave your weld deposit benefits from every subsequent pass (to a point) with each pass you anneal and normalize the subsequent pass resulting in a more refined crystalline grain structure. Also lots of testers who have never worked as welders won't allow weave caps but basically everything can have stringers. Please correct me if I'm wrong Jordie but I'm speaking with a background from Canada and lots of on site stick. Love the videos keep it up

      You make a good point. Its different everywhere you go due to different codes and applications. I worked a fab shop for quite a while where 48 inch pipe was welded routinely using a big roller setup and auto mig with auto oscillation. But the code at that time permitted it for the application. For example, Pipe codes like B31.1 or API1104 have very different requirements...and those codes are even especially different from structural codes like AWS D1.1.

    If you want a flat uphill weld, move over the center of the weld very quick and stay mostly on the sides.. works well with severel welds on top of each other.

    I watched your entire basics series, and learned so much. Thanks you. I have problem with hand placement when doing long welds. Maybe you can do a dry run on how to adjust your bracing as you move along to keep the weld look good. Mine looks bad when I have to move my brace hand. You've given me a lot of knowledge on whys of welding, more than any other channel. Keep up the great videos.

      Honestly you just need to practice free hand. Engage your core and breathe slowly. I used to weld landing gears for semis and it was about a 2ft weld and you just gotta get comfy and position your body where you want to finish and wind back to the start

    0:48 people seem to think you shouldn’t pull with MiG. You can run it pushing, pulling, or straight. Generally speaking, pushing allows the arc to dig in deeper, but you can get the same results pulling by slowing down and increasing amps and wire speed a touch. MiG is very flexible in its use. As long as you have good amperage, good stick out, good speed and good gas coverage, you can run MiG pretty much any way you want.

    WOW i do mine totally different then at the end you showed the z weave and i was like... ahh so i wasnt taught wrong! lol
    This was definutly what took me the longest to maser but once you do anything else is easy mode!! Being able to Stick weld uphill already helps alot although i found the Technic is slightly different for MIG than a 7018, 6011 uphill! i was also taught that you want to always set your machine to weld in any position at the same setting but, ive always had to lower my setting for GMAW uphill! Im assumeing you also have to set your machine and wire speed lower as well?
    Nice video i subed just because... why not ive only watched about all of your stuff! LOL

    What were the settings used here ? I grew up on the farm teaching myself to stick weld haha after army passed a test got certified to weld on railroad anddd now shop got furloughed sooo I applied at a company for full time welder & they told me I had to take a test and I studied up best I could to have at least the basics down pat …when I get there they said I had to take a vertical and horizontal test … it ended up being a 1-bead Tjoint that was vertical and said a minimum of 6 beads/tags per inch 🤔and I couldn’t use trigger the whole time so I asked ole boy to show me an example I hadn’t heard of that and it was basically a series of uphill tacs and the settings were 27.5V @ 435ipm wire speed MIG weld … to me that seems mighty hot no wonder they wanted tacs andd said it was pulse welding uphill was the name and the little bit I know about that isnt pulse just a setting that may or may not be on the welder ??? I’d appreciate ANYYY feedback fellas take care and God bless..!

    If your doing vert uphill with a several pass fill in. Do you quench periodically? Or let it air cool? I know quenching can be detrimental to strength and makes warping worse. But it seems the hotter things get with each pass, the more the weld tends to want to sag

      Not so much a technique tip as a process tip. If you are going to use MIG i would suggest getting a set up than can do a true spray transfer. In almost every circumstance you will get much deeper penetration over other mig processes

    Hey Jody. I'm Blake and I'm 15, sophomore in highschool. I may possibly be taking college courses next year in a welding program at WITC of Ashland.
    I've done quite a lot of welding, but my grandfather's shitty harbor freight 90A flux core only does so much, which isn't a lot...
    I am looking at the brand new Lincoln Power MIG 210. Mig and tig. I was mainly wanting tig, but for $1000 this unit is a great deal.
    What would you recommend for a torch for this unit as one is not supplied?

      If you are going to learn to TIG weld an AC/DC machine is essential if you're going to spend 1000 dollars. AC is required for aluminum welding.

    • @weldingtipsandtricks
      @weldingtipsandtricks  10 лет назад

      I lowered settings to 19.5 volts and 245 ipm with .035" wire. For 1/8" and under , I would just weld downhill unless required to weld uphill.

    • @weldingdata
      @weldingdata 10 лет назад

      I have turned .035 wire down as low as 15.5 volts and adjusted the wfs to suit. I do to show the effects of position changes on fusion. On thinner materials, downhill works and will produce less warping even though the setting are higher.

      jody, I just tried out for a welding position, and the shop has all the machines set cranked up! they really did not like using them too low, they want the penetration. found it impossible to weld uphill,was blowing holes in the plate. and much of the fitment was oxy cut and not too good! I did not weld well! how do you not blow holes or pile up at high settings? well over 300 on wire speed, and well over 27 on v?

    • @carlylynne9214
      @carlylynne9214 4 года назад

      If you are welding something that needs to be x-ray tested they're a great tool. When it's cold outside and you're welding something that needs preheating and to remain within temp guidelines you will need the temp sticks. They sell different temperature tester sticks for whatever temperature guidelines you will be following. If you're welding something and you like to crank up your machine setting they're a great tool to pay attention to wether or not you're overheating your workpiece.

    • @carlylynne9214
      @carlylynne9214 4 года назад

      They definitely help for preheating for proper weld penetration in colder weather. Preheating in cold weather also will help prevent cracks.

I'm earning a degree in aerospace engineering, and want to learn to fabricate spacecraft (to my own design specs, in the future). Do you have any specific videos aimed at aerospace fabrication? I heard that's your bread and butter.

    Sir, what kind of wire did you use on this video?

    When would you recommend laying a bead on top of another bead?

    Maybe it's an optical illusion, but did you, or do you clean the mill scale off before an uphill pass? I found it MUCH easier and cleaner to hit it with a grinder first and get the scale off the plates. Might be something helpful to pass along to students. Thanks for helping us all, old and new to welding, learn a few more tricks! ~ Billy

    Can you please do a 6g gmaw root filler and cover pass video. I have a job I'm trying to get and they do full 6g pipe test to get the job but they do not require cert. I can't hardly find anything on the Internet about fully gmaw 6g pipe.

      Hunter Pittman I'm pretty sure that ChuckE2009 has done a 6G gmaw open root and filler video. Hope it helps you out.

    Hey Jody, You make great tutorials for people like me so please keep it up. Just a quick question, at 03:41 you mentioned about overlapping Triangles, and going on about it looks more circular than a triangle. Would by doing overlapping circles do work or not, or is it better just to stick with overlapping triangles. Thanks and I would be grateful if you could reply :-)

    I just got a new job and when things got slow one day I decided to do some vertical mig. My weld look globbed up and.very convex. I feel my settings were wrong. Can you tell me what could have been my problem?

      if the weld is too high, your wire speed is too high. if the weld is too wide, your heat is too high. best way to start, begin with setting your machine to the recommended heat settings for the metal thickness and type you're welding, then adjust the wire speed according to your style, everyone's is different. if you start at an angle, stay at that angle. altering the nozzle's relationship to the metal causes the spread of heat to move which causes drips and undercuts in the weld. if your welds looks like a bunch of v's, your traveling too fast. practice downhill first to get the feel and the look you're going for, then switch to uphill.

      Thanks Dacey. I have been working on my wire speed and voltage, seems to be getting better. I have been out of practice for too long.

    Any cons to the Z weave? It seems like in theory and in practice that it is much easier and faster. Same question for tig fill/cover passes.
