  • 3D graphics mostly runs on matrix transformations. If done properly, those will be coded in some low-level programming language, designed to be sent off to a GPU and processed in barely a blink of an eye. Of course, this is not being done properly. This is being done in a spreadsheet. And more CPU effort is probably going on those smoothing animations when you update the cells and the numbers scroll and the chart morphs to the next set of values. It's incredibly inefficient. Do not do this for serious work.
    So, why? Well, it's an interesting but accessible exercise in matrix transformations, and how to project 3D coordinates onto a 2D surface for viewing. I should really set it for some undergraduates to figure out how to do this. They'll love it. By which, I mean, they'll hate it. But it really isn't as hard as it looks.
