Those old landcruisers are hard to beat! When I was young, I had a friend who had a 73 cruiser. I in my 55 cj5, and he in his cruiser would tear southern az up! Alot of fun. Miss those days. Hood vid.
Way neat video. When I was in middle school my dad worked in Panama for the US Army Tropic Test Center and we had a BJ-40. We went some really neat places, especially in the Western Panama province of Chiriqui. Thanks for sharing.
Beautiful rig. Great vid. Makes me think of Dick Stansfield and his '83 FJ40. I believe I still have all the old Off Road issues with photos and articles covering his adventures - buried in boxes in my attic.
@@FJAdventurer waooo beautiful fj40 I am proud of you sr you are enjoying that exelente machine I have one in my garage for 25 years is in great condition with v8 motor With you video I feel motívate again to put my fj40 back on the road I will suscribe to you Chanel
Just found this video. Absolutely great! Love to see a fellow 40 owner still using these as they were meant to. Love the decal on your back windows too😉👍
There are a ton of pavement princesses out there! I even saw a stock Honda CRV once. You will be fine. There are plenty of bypasses for the hairier stuff :;
@@FJAdventurer I’ve got plenty of trail stripes and my skid plates have taken a beating. I wish I had my FJ40 again. I never was concerned about the sheet metal.

Oh yeah! I’d love to have a diesel, but in my area the only way that would happen is if I swapped one in. The BJ’s never made it to the states, and the ones that are here are unicorns!
Those are 15”x9” Chevy square body rally wheels with 33”x10.5” BFG KO2 tires. I bought the wheels off Craigslist for $25 (for 5), and had the centers bored out a little to fit over Toyota hubs. Then I used self tapping sheet metal screws to attach FJ40 hub caps to them to get a semi-OEM look. I bought the tires off Amazon 😂
Unfortunately, I'm not 100% sure what the springs are, but I think they are "Rough Country". They were on the rig when I bought it a few years back. They are worn out, rusted, and slipping laterally. I recently bought a new set of Pro Comp 2.5" springs to install. I'm just waiting on U-bolts to get here. The shackles are new and are greaseable "HFS" from www.coolcruisers.com/shacleafspri.html. The shocks are new Bilstein's 5125's I purchased from www.shockwarehouse.com/site/product.cfm?id=1538270.
During that video they were unknown springs. I’m guessing rancho, but worn out soft, slipping and sagging. But, I did have new Bilstein shocks. I replaced the springs recently with pro comps. They are much nicer, and not to stiff/harsh. I made a couple videos about it.
He's tough when the going gets rough. Dont know why toyota dont build these ute these days, the Landcruiser series is an expensive yacht for trails. And importantly, the driver's skill over these trail, is excellent
It’s a shame they quit producing them. I think there is still a market for rigs like these. Maybe with the success of the new bronco, Toyota will bring some form of it back. Hopefully more “FJ40-ish” and less “FJ Crusier-ish”. That said, I love the simplicity of the classics.
I appreciate the feedback. I know what you mean, but sometimes the trail is so fun, that you get caught up in the action, and forget about movie production, haha… This happened to be one of those times.
I agree wholeheartedly - just listening to the vehicle running along is soundtrack enough. To me, one of the best reasons to get out in the sticks like this is to get away from the yolo-crowd pumping a techno-track through their Bluetooth speakers... But keep the videos coming - looks like fun!!
@@tonydyvr that’s great feedback! Thanks, man. I struggle between narration, music and nothing at all. I’d like to grow the channel, but I worry 10 minutes of wheeling with no other media added would bore people. It’s quite the balancing act. I’m learning a lot.
@@FJAdventurer No worries - some extremely popular video channels have little to no extra sound added (like "my mechanics" - Swiss guy who restores old tools/etc.) As far as what you're making - the drone work is great, and for my money, ten minutes of unedited, unaltered time watching you guys wheeling is the closest thing to me actually being there. Not boring in the slightest!! In fact, to satisfy your own curiosity, maybe try uploading two videos of the same trip - one edited with narrative/music/etc. as you see fit, and one just background trail noise with nothing else. Then see which ones folks prefer. Just a thought. Keep it coming, tho'!!
@@tonydyvr I’ve been kicking around that exact idea. I have a part 2 to this video in the works already, but instead it follows the Willys instead of the FJ. I’ll upload it at the end of the week with nothing but the natural sounds of a 70 year old rig out wheelin’, and see how it does ;)
I have a rear auburn locker (auto locker). It works great and all I need 99% of the time. That other 1% it would be nice to have a front locker. That said, my winch works great, and front lockers are costly 😅
Yeah - That spot was a combination of problems - short-ish wheelbase, and/or no front locker. A longer or shorter wheelbase vehicle would have traversed that spot easily, but my 40 was the imperfect length not to. Additionally, if I had a front locking differential (like many off-roading vehicles), it would have been a cake walk. The FJ40 is an incredibly capable vehicle in its stock condition. Most vehicles that want to keep up with it need modifications of some sort to do so. In other words, don't let this one video taint your perspective, they are amazing and cool vehicles :)

Before my cruiser, I had 74 CJ5. Those old Jeeps were pretty unstoppable too. I’m guessing in AZ rust wasn’t as big of a problem tho 😂
Good thing about az, NO rust!! It does however get a little warm tho!!!

This looks amazing. Happy to know my 40 could handle this no problem. So glad I got one when I was 18. I'll be 40 in Feb. LC's are king!!!
40’s can handle any and all things 😉 Happy early birthday! 🎉

Another video convincing me to put lockers in.
I’m considering the same. I think my auburn in the rear is giving up, and a selectable would be nice up front.
Thats an awesome old Toyota. That's also an awesome trail. I'm going to have to check it out some day. Thanks for sharing.
Thanks! The misses and I are quite fond of her :). The trail is just one of many in the area. You can spend all day out there and not hit them all :)
Great video! I love seeing the legends in their native habitat. 😍
Thanks! And I agree! In my opinion, there is a severe shortage of FJ40’s doing FJ40 stuff on RUclips. I’m trying to help solve that problem :)
Hell yes, nobody wheels their 40’s anymore! However, I am guilty of my own accusations, my 55 is never going off the pavement again.
There is just something special with an old off-road rig over 40 plus years out in the trails that a new rig doesn't compare.
You are preaching to the quire. These old rigs are analog from top to bottom, and I wouldn’t want it any other way.
love the content, thank you for doing what you guys do!!! Toyota's are the best vehicles in the world!!!
Thanks for the shout out, you’re welcome, and I fully agree!

What size wheels and tires are you running on your 40? I really like the look of the deep dish wheels.

@@FJAdventurer Very nice, the deep dish look with the original style hubcaps looks really cool.
Lower tire pressures for starters, and does that have a rear LSD? My FJ40 was good on 33" no power steering. Extended spring shackles also.
I have an auburn in the rear. I run around 17 psi on the trail. I know I can go lower without bead locks, but I’m generally not hurting for traction.
Great video... What suspension do you have installed on it?

Love the footage. I'm not a fan of the music. Less music, and a little more interaction between drivers would liven it up a bit (imho).
