Kim is so innocent yet so honest with so much tragedy in her life. Lea Salonga played this role so well and set the bar so high that till this day no female has got the acting and singing ability she had in the Original production. I have to say this Actor, Will Chase, who plays Chris here, is very different from Simon Bowman. Will has alot of passion, exactly how an American GI could have felt falling for a young Vietnamese girl. His love is so genuine for his Kim and his voice, superb. Even his breathing gets erratic after kissing her, showing genuine chemistry between them. I liked him here as Chris. But there was more tenderness as well as passionate feelings showed to Kim when Simon Bowman played Chris, you could see that he held back on getting over passionate with Kim, I suppose, out of respect for her real age. I admired him for that. Each of these men costars interpreted their roles totally different, and Lea the very flexible but very talented actress she is, knew how to respond to her male costars different interpretations, which made each performance unique, different and extra special each performance. Please watch her 40th Anniversary Show where she gets back with her original costar Simon Bowman in Miss Saigon, to sing their love songs. It was so beautiful, touching and heartbreaking to see them singing together again. Their voices rich and more cultured with age but there was still that tender chemistry between them even after 25 or more years since they acted and sung together in the Original production of Miss Saigon. It Was memorable to watch and listen to them.
Both versions are wonderful. With Simon in 1989 at 18 years old, she is so innocent. And 11 years later in 2000, with Will, she knows about passion. Both are exceptional performances.
I have to agree. I have watched Miss Saigon 4 times; once in Broadway, with Joanna Ampil, once at Sydney, 2 times in Perth. I find Will Chase's Chris full of youthful innocence, and sincere pure love. They are a great pair with Lea.
When Kim wakes up, Chris tries to give her money, but she refuses, saying that it is her first time sleeping with a man ("This Money's Yours"). Touched to learn that Kim is an orphan, Chris tells her that she need not sell herself at the club, because he wants her to stay with him.
I know that others have said it before, but it's true that Will Chase and Lea Salonga looked and sounded like a Disney prince and princess in the beginning of this video. Lea sang those low notes so well when she told her tragic backstory, and I could imagine all the death and destruction, and the trauma. It's horrifying! 😭 As always, it's just brilliant acting from these two. I love them. ❤
Thanks for sharing this video. What brilliant talents - The composers of both lyrics & music, each segment is so expressive of the content and mood, the performances of both Will Chase and most especially Lea Salonga's singing & acting. Excellent!
am an avid fan of Leah especially with her performance with Muss Saigon. I am in love wth their love. if this not a fiction I cry for them not having realized their love. I wish they resurrected t and live that love again.
Do you want one more tale of a Vietnam girl? Want to know I was bound to a man I don't love? Do you want to be told how my village was burned? Want to hear how my family was blasted away? How I ran from the rice field and saw them in flames? How my parents were bodies whose faces were gone? I have had my fill of pain I will not look back again I would rather die
Why is there a different guy on the other clips? This one is gingered hair (as i see it, not sure due to lightings) and the other one is dark brown????
Jieran Yu The original guy was from the London cast, the first production. His name is Simon Bowman. The ginger haired one you're talking about is this guy from the Manila cast, he's Will Chase.
but I am only wondering, why didnt' they get a vietnamese singer since this is a story of a vietnam girl..? if this is a filipino story and they didnt' get a filipino, rally agad o strike. gnun ang pilipino eh..walang kahihiyan
It's not as simple as getting a Vietnamese girl, I think they're main focus was that the actress was Asian and the rest is up to talent and wether they fit the role. It would be nice but it's more important that the characters are the same race, it doesn't change anything either way. Think about it like this, do you think every actor and actress from once on this island is from the region where it is set? Of course not. What's important is that they are black and have talent. I recall in the search for a Kim there was a girl coincidentally from Saigon and many more from Vietnam but in the end it's a competitive position and Lea was chosen.
This is Broadway and I think we are already past the point where there should be restrictions on ethnic backgrounds. You are basically discriminating your fellow Asians right now. Simon Bowman (original Chris) and Alistair Brammer (25th Anniversary Chris) are both British and played an American role but I did not see you picking on them. Of course a Vietnam girl would really fit the role because well, she's Vietnamese. However, there are a lot of points needed to consider. If you watch the Making of Miss Saigon documentary, lots of girls from different nationalities auditioned as well. There was a Vietnamese there and she even rode a boat to leave Vietnam! How fitting! She was one of the girls they considered, but guess who made the cut? It's Lea. Just from the moment she started her first verse, it was the end of their search for Kim. Should the French be in rage that Lea got the Eponine role in Les Miserables even though she's Asian? You can't just restrict other Asian from auditioning just because they're not the nationality described in the role. If they can enact the role with excellence, then I don't see the problem in that. A Vietnamese can play a Filipino role if he/she is more fitting for the role as well. If some Filipinos rally because of that, then they should check their misplaced patriotism then.
Nuhh you sounds stupid. It's just a show. A man made story and also it's doubtful that Vietnamese would watch this cuz we know a lot of them couldn't understand the language.

Denise Wendt You are right but the show you are talking about is the 25th anniversary gala, not the 40th.
Denise Wendt Yes its definitly true.

100 percent agree.. no one will ever surpassed Lea in this role. She is just magnificent indeed
I always get teary-eyed whenever I hear the tale of the Vietnam girl expressed with deep emotions by Lea's voice 😭😢
0:46 to 1:46
This one minute, ladies and gentlemen is enough to prove how amazing a singer she is...
I love Lea's "how would I like?" And "yes I would like". Like ughhh love it.
Will and Les were to me the best paring. Their natural chemistry and wonderful voices were heart breaking and real.

Lea is a phenomenon. Her voice is impeccable
