    Hi Neevesy,
Was hit by a car sitting at a traffic light a few weeks ago so all of these armor conversations have been very interesting. someone ran a red light and t-boned me while on my bike so it was a pretty hard impact that flung me from my ride. single most important piece of gear i can possibly give recommend for act of god type accidents is a quality helmet. soft armor in my jeans and jacket protected me from broken bones when i hit the ground, but obviously a lot of luck was involved. i will always swear up and down to get good gear, cheap gear wont protect you nearly enough. a minor concussion and massively sore body is about all i have in terms of injuries with the so-called "useless armor".
love your reviews and i hope you enjoy it up there, experience as much excellent food as you can!

As a former "urban" gear wearer, I've been slowly upgrading the gear I wear on my commute.
I think the good thing about stylish gear is that people who would otherwise go without gear have an option to have some level of slide protection without looking out of place at the destination.
Wearing track gear to work (especially pants) sacrifices too much in comfort imo, so I've found a good compromise in AAA rated jeans, high boots with good ankle protection that go under the pants, (such as the dainese axial), plus a higher end textile top with gauntlet gloves. Hopefully it gets the job done if the worst happens.

Yes Neevesy! RS250 was like a piece of unobtainable exotica when i was a teenager....we all used to dream about one. One of my mates had a RS125 which for us at the time was a rocket! We could only imagine how fast the RS250 would be with twice the engine size - in my naïve head, twice the engine = double the speed! 😮 It probably wouldn't blow my socks off with speed now but I'd love to ride one and maybe even own one. I bet they're fun around a tight track. Keepin' the dream alive!

Then again, for someone who got to ride Rossi's MotoGP bike... I often hear the RC30 can feel a little underwhelming to ride, but these things go much deeper than that as you put across so well, just looking at one takes me back to the showroom (in St Neots!) where I first saw one in real life when I was 19, a moment I'll never forget!

Great videos as usual. About the first question about hard braking at the end of a long straight, I realized having a tank grip made such a huge difference for me to hold my body position for the corner entry. So that is sorted now. However, the issue I usually face is engine braking when off throttle in the corner. My '09 R6 has too much engine braking it seems when riding in the correct gear for the corner entry. if I go a gear up, then I don't feel confident.

    Hi Neevesey,
Really appreciate you taking the time to do these videos and the opportunity for us to ask questions.
So, if I may, I have a question about knees in vs out when cornering on track.
    I'm a mid-pack intermediate group rider on a 2000 ZX6R.
I keep my knees in when cornering, to brace myself, and getting my knee down hasn’t been a priority.
I recently tired hanging a knee out after seeing how naff I looked in some trackside photos; lower body locked in/ upper body hanging out, but it didn't feel comfortable, and was a little distracting.
Besides looking good and being a gauge of how far you can lean, is it necessary to have knee out?
    Appreciate your thoughts on this,
    Tharanga

    • @HelloJamesBond
      @HelloJamesBond 5 месяцев назад +1

Hope you don't mind me chipping in here. I'm no expert but hopefully i can add something useful. If you're keeping your knees in you might be taking more lean angle then you need to. Also, by the sound of it, you could be gripping the bike too tightly and making it nervous. Try having one bum cheek hanging off the side of the corner and don't worry too much about your knee.
How do you position your feet when cornering? I've found this can have a big effect on your knee. I like to put my toes on the inside peg and use that to point my knee in the direction i want it. ...
There's so much to body position and ultimately you should do what works for you. I love this because its like an art we're constantly trying to refine and improve. Good luck with it and let us know how you get on!

    • @tharangabasnayake
      @tharangabasnayake 5 месяцев назад

@@HelloJamesBond Thank you for your comment 😊
My butt is half off the seat but I pincer the tank, sort of, it with both knees when I corner.
The inside knee is usually more forward on the tank, compared to the outside one, as I’ve rotated my torso to get my inside elbow, shoulder and head as far forward as I can.
I also push hard on the inside peg to steer, pointing those toes into the bike, to minimise the work I need to do on the bars mid corner.
I haven’t really felt the bike being nervous and keeping my top half loose lets it do whatever it needs to do once I’ve steered in.
Retracing my steps; many years ago at Uni, one of the machine shop staff who did some club racing told me about how he rode and that he didn’t bother getting his knee down in favour of holding on to the bike. I think I heard that when I was still developing my style and it stuck because it made sense..

Morning Neevesy! I suffered my first road crash a week ago while being blinded by the setting sun coming into a corner at low speed (40mph) and was left with questions regarding protection.
I was wearing full casual motorcycle gear with all the pads and actually 2 sets of back protection and surprisingly I found out the hard way that if you fall sideways, your pelvis and ribs are fully exposed as I broke 5 of them and was left with a lumbar hematoma, but I found that even airbags don't protect these areas. Maybe only a full blown and bulky motor cross vest with kidney coverage. My jacket thick and heavy back protector was also made redundant because the jacket allows it to move sideways to the opposite side which it will do on a side impact.
I am really surprised how professional and club racers are falling at twice the speed with basically only abrasion protection, which to be fair, all my gear did amazingly well on that remark.
    Cheers and good travels!

Morning Neevesy - I know that US west coast jet lag feeling! You were probably awake around 3am?!
I have a follow up question related to stability under braking on track - although it’s more of a philosophical one for most of us mere mortals. And it relates to the LEG DANGLE that top level racers do. How on earth do they stop their body weight flying forwards without using their arms, if they’ve only got one leg touching the bike? Yes that single thigh will take some load, but surely not all of it with the force they brake at? Has always mystified me!
Thanks again for all the fantastic content and taking the time and energy to put it out there ☺️

The leg going to act as a wind brake, the same as sticking your inside knee out and sitting up higher - resisting the braking force that’s pushing you forward.

Thank you for another great video Michael. The variety of questions and your thoughts never cease to amaze me. I have a question that I don’t think has been asked before. Tyre pressures are often discussed in terms of setting them either hot or cold, but not how hot is too hot when riding.
I’m book for a track day in August, which will my first time back on a track since racing an RGV250 twenty years ago. That ended with a crash an Brands Hatch and a double fracture to my collar bone and subsequently an end to racing as it was too expensive. Anyway, I now ride a KTM 1290 Super Duke EVO. This is much faster and more powerful than anything I’ve ridden before, it I don’t expect to be that fast on track. (The most important thing is to stay sunny side up and have fun.) I’m not sure whether I should reduce my PSI to begin with especially as I can monitor this with the bikes TPMS. But at what running pressure should I consider reducing the tyre pressure?
How much pressure is too much?
On the road, I run 35psi cold (1psi below recommended as I weigh under 65Kg) and that goes up to 41psi - may get warmer as the weather improves.
BTW, I also have a “drop foot” from a RTA and have to wear boots to change gear. TIA.

Hi Neevesy, seeking your thoughts on level 1 versus level 2 armour in race suits. All of the new Dainese race suits, including the most expensive airbag suit, only has level 1. There is level 2 armour only in the most expensive Alpinestars suits. I know the difference between level 1 and 2 in terms of transference of energy, but why do you think some manufacturers mainly use level 1? Is it putting safety at risk? Enjoy the channel.

I have a couple of older sportbikes in my motorcycle quiver that don't get much use (maybe 1500-2000 mi/yr) and consequently they don't wear tires quickly. I have just been changing out tires every 3 years. But I'm wondering if that's a waste of $ and tires. The bikes are stored indoors.

As a tyrefitter, we are not meant to sell them after 5 years old. Check the dot number on the sidewall, but if parked on carpet not concrete, stored correctly 5 years is fine. After this the grip will drop noticeably, unless you drive like toprak they're fine.

Hi Neevsy. Thanks for the videos. I’m a newish rider having passed my test only 20 months ago and I’ve currently done 2 track days with my third lined up. I had an incredible time on the first one but crashed on my second. Being a novice, it would be super helpful to get your opinion on why I crashed. The tyres were up to temp. Pressures adjusted and a warm dry day. You can see me losing the rear tyre in this video:
    ruclips.net/video/ewhRDgrK3gg/видео.htmlsi=AxivU0V1CMLG3dgE
My questions are: is it a simple case of me being too aggressive with the throttle? If so, why does it seem like others can get away with being seemingly more aggressive at these lean angles and not have the same happen? Is that normally the limit or is it in some part due to the bike being not ideal for track or using sports touring tyres that were 6-7 years old?
Any advice would be super helpful for me and likely other novice, new track day fans.
    Much appreciated.
PS. The bike had basically no damage luckily but I’ve got an L1 gixxer now 😄

Hi mate, I'm sorry about your slip off, but I'm glad you and the bike were ok. Listening to the clip it sounds like you got on the throttle, then the peg touched the floor. If that's the case you got on the gas as you were still leaning and it asked too much of the rear tyre (the peg touching would've taken weight off the rear, too). If that was the case, the answer is to not touch the throttle while you're still turning, only apply it when you're ready to stand the bike up out of the corner. Does that sound about right?

Thanks for taking the time to watch the video and reply. Yes that makes sense. I’m always too impatient to get back on the gas but I’ll work on it. Will be at brands this Thursday. Let’s hope we dodge the rain! 😅
      Thanks again!

Thanks, once again, for the great content. The FortNine vid wasn't provocative, it was irresponsible and misleading. Because Ryan lacks the imagination for wounds that can be inflicted on unprotected skin, he shouldn't proselytise his stupidity to others, imo.
