I think a lot of the criticism would have been avoided if they'd just done a fully-animated feature in the same or similar style to Mojang's update trailers. That's probably a lot more what people were expecting and/or wanted.
Somebody reanimated the entire trailer in Mine-imator and that fan animation looks so much better than the official trailer. The official trailer is definitely much higher fidelity, but Ugly Sonic was also a high fidelity model and that also was a horrible idea.
VERY off topic but you know that strife solutions series you did way back, it really forged my interest in design tech and science the interest has stuck with me ever since, thank you Mr Strife.
There is a theory that they are using AI art programs, which sounds odd, but with how popular AI generated art is becoming, it doesn't sound as wild anymore.
You can tell just by looking at the artstyle they went with, that nobody making decisions on the movie was talking with the people who worked on the videogames. I don't know how integrated Telltale games was with Mojang during the development of Minecraft Story mode, but you can tell there was an effort to blend the two styles into something still very toy-like, but with a little more detail to show expressions etc. both teams were talking about how to make it look right. The fact that the trailer prominently shows the 'ha ha, the animals have derpy faces' joke in the film points to the idea that the film's director and producer's are really only interested in the mass-market appeal that the brand 'Minecraft' holds, rather than any love or respect for the game that millions play.
I think the sinner here is marketing. If the creatures had looked like minecraft creatures, then they could not merchandise them. So the plan was properly like: Use minecraft IP to attract viewers => expose viewers to plushy like creatures => Sell minecraft plushes.
I predict it will be like the first Sonic Movie. People will complain about it until they decide to improve it. Also. I like your hat, where can I get one?
My concern is, that the Sonic movie was delayed for 4 months to fix one character. This would be a changing the character design for 90% of the movie, and that would be very expensive & delay the movie up to a year +.
The trailer just gave me a vibe of greedy corporate studio using industry hack actors shoving a tired formulaic script onto a titan game to milk every cent out of it they can. Jack black? Really? Hard pass.
I don't understand the choice of casting Joe Black.... for anything. I don't get why Hollywood likes him so much. He's so caustic, and can only play one character.
To be honest with you I see this movie as being kind of a nothing burger. I don't like the live action as much, but it makes sense to have the more realistic look for minecraft if it's gonna be live action.
It's also really annoying. Because we should be discussing the various parts of the trailer that made no sense and are just bad. But then because of right wing bigots like Nick Fuentes, among many others, we have to deal with their racism about there being a black woman in the trailer and their screams of "DEI!".
element animation looks like shit. If the movie were anything like it there would be an even lower chance I watched it in theaters. Not entertaining in the least bit.
I want to see what is inside the sheep. Could we have cubic haggis?

Gotta pay those legacy actors whose time has passed somehow......
Or Telltale's game.
The most confusing thing in trailer is, that the Main antagonists are Piglins, when in the game it's ender dragon

their art style was certainly... a choice.

Money, that's why
Actually, Tetris is the best selling game of all time.
my wild take? is it real? or not a real movie, but a promotional misdirect for a forthcoming expansion or new game? it just feels so off.
It's ugly sonic all over again!

I hate it but I will watch it, obviously
I’m just gonna pirate it.
