‘Hot City’ was taped in Los Angeles and these shows bring back the true experiences of what the Disco era was like in Disco clubs around the country . . . the clothes, the hair, the makeup, the moves, the sexuality, and the ‘attitude’. So step into a real time machine and disco the night away - and just remember that all these energetic couples are now in their 60’s and 70’s so dance while you can.

In 1978 I was the Manager of 3M Graphics Systems Television Network and the ½” VHS video tape format was new in the United States. While developing 3M magnetic tape for this new format we would evaluate different formulation lots by recording off-air programs. I recently found a box of these test tapes that are now over 40 years old. I’ve uploaded them for your enjoyment . . . and please excuse the occasional tape wrinkles, drop-outs, mis-tracking and jump cuts.
During the height of disco-mania in August of 1978 a syndicate TV show called ‘Hot City’ was produced by Kip Walton and began airing on Metromedia stations across the country on Saturday nights at 8PM.
The show’s format called for guest appearances by acts including Frankie Valli, Tina Turner, Aretha Franklin, Peter Brown, Eddie Kendricks, Linda Clifford, and Grace Jones. It also featured disco dancers and a disco dance contest. The choreographed dance numbers were by Jeff Kutash and his Dancers, called the ‘Hot City’ Stutters.
Producer Walton was seeking to capitalize on the “Saturday Night Fever” phenomenon on TV before it had a chance to fade. Not new to music and dance, Walton’s track record included five years producing and directing ‘Bandstand’ at Dick Clark Productions, as well as “Where the Action Is”, Mama Cass’ “Get It Together” and “Happening”. One of his earliest solo efforts was packaging “Pop,” an ABC youth special starring Davy Jones, the Osmonds and Mike Curb.
And, for all the dancers who participated in these shows and are now in their 60’s & 70’s, hope you enjoy the look back.

Oh gosh this brings me back to my childhood.. I just loved everything about this window of time.
I used to watch this TV show on Friday nights. Finally get to see this again and re-live these wonderful memories. Thank you for recovering these classic tapes!
Extraordinario programa de televisión, el día de ayer encontré sus videos Stphen Taylor felicitaciones
This is like a MILLION times better than SOLID GOLD or DANCE FEVER !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! wow
La música Disco te mantenía en forma eran horas y horas de bailar sin parar, mejor que un gimnasio
Being from the UK haven't heard or seen this show before. It's excellent. I'm familiar with most of the songs growing up.
Por lejos la mejor época, saludos desde chile 👍
What a wonderful archive....lost until....now!!! Hats off 2 u!
Thanks - glad you're enjoying them
Seeing this show, especially the sung intro by the fire character, really touched in me a forgotten memory of life as a 7 year old. My sister LOVED this show and always had it on when it came on Saturday nights on NY Metromedia Channel 5. Thank you so, so much for this perfect time machine and archive back to a wonderful time.
I reside in NYC (Brooklyn) and have been here since September 1978. I vaguely remember Soap Factory Disco also airing before or after this show. Those were the days.
In my heart, I know that at least some of these people here NEVER stopped dancing. In 2021, they’re just catching their second wind.
Wow! Tina does disco! I thought that song was new on her 80s Private Dancer album
🙄 wow! Thanks Mr Stephen Taylor for uploading! Never saw or heard of this show until today (in 2023)! It's a TREASURE TROVE indeed... everything! 😍
Wonderful music, wonderful times, wonderful memories!...Thank Youuuuuu
part of the disco explosion. Nothing can compare to it's impact on pop culture.
Wow only recently became aware of this GEM of show!! Looks like only about 15 episodes max yet actually find this way superior to Dance Fever & even Solid Gold!! They had all the A listers & legends on & top notch production etc...Possibly didn't work due to over saturation of this genre?
ESTOY FASCINADO DE ENCONTRAR ESTE PROGRAMA QUE VEÍA CUANDO ERA ADOLESCENTE, ME PUSO SUPER CONTENTO, SALUDOS DESDE SANTIAGO DE CHILE
Living in the UK we never saw this show. We never had a dedicated disco show, only Top of the Pops which ran from new Years Day 1964 until the early 2000s.
Wonderful Frankie, muah! ❤ Those were the times!
ST it's been year this memories been posted. If you have any more can you posted them. Sure we 60+ will enjoy and thank you as well
I see a lot of street dance legends on this one like the late great Shabba-Doo(whom I had the pleasure of interviewing), Lollipop and that bald headed brother with his early b-boy moves that was breaking it down on Copacabana, I saw him killing it on Soul Train.
Mister X was his name....
Heh heh! I remember that brother from Soul Train too. He was dynamic and every now and then he'd use that oversized tooth brush as a prop. Rip to Shabba-Doo who became a dance director as well. Good memories from Hot City.
I love the night live in internet
I wish the lighting was just a bit brighter to see all the great clothes and hair better!
The amount of cocaine used on that show was legendary.
I am loving this. I was 18 at time and partying! LOL Thank you.
Thank you so much for this perfect time machine!
I didn't see this show in Denver.
The Metromedia station in Houston,Texas(KDOG channel 26,now Fox affiliate KRIV)aired early on Saturday nights back to back with “Twiggy’s Jukebox “ at 8pm. I was 9 years old at the time.
Shows like this make me so mad that my mother had me at the dawn of the 80s. I missed out on what a hell of a time the 70s were. I am loving this show. I was a dancer in my teens and early 20s so I probably would've been on this show if I was around and lived in LA. I do love seeing the shows that Frankie Valli performed "Grease" on and seeing the people rocking to it. It's such a great song and it's a shame that Randal Kleiser(the film's director) hated it as it "sounded too disco".
You should be lucky she gave you life at all. So damn ungrateful. Sheesh!

It's not that deep. Stop reading too much into the first line.
The TV station that aired this was WTCN in Minneapolis,Minnesota. Less than a year later, the station became an NBC affiliate yet continued to air programming Metromedia had already acquired for the station to air. By 1986,they had the complete NBC schedule and changed its call letters to the current KARE.
Who is the lady singing Lucy in the sky with diamonds.
Diane Steinberg-Lewis. She played Lucy in the movie, Sgt.Pepper’s Lonely Hearts Club Band.
So cool. About 5 years after this Shabba Doo would be starring in Breakin'. I totally forgot he was one of Jeff's dancers as he was a legendary Locker. I remember this show and another show from Miami called "Kicks" which also featured Jeff and some of these dancers.

Here I am an ardent feminist, and I just watched the host call two women dancers "girls" and "lovely little muffins." (24:11). But I love this show and disco in general. Thanks for uploading. But why so many edits?
Bob, remember that we recorded these for business purposes to evaluate the magnetic tape development for the VHS standard and didn't want commercials to play when we were viewing them at engineering meetings. So the commercials were edited On-the-Fly while recording was taking place.
@@stephentaylor8461 I get it, sorry...I hope people will remember that this was not a really sloppy disco fan editing these this year but the result of material lost many years ago as you said.
Not one actual live performance
Where's the sound?
Wonderful music, wonderful times, wonderful memories!...Thank Youuuuuu
