I finally got some chores done that I've put off for months!!! I asked my husband to just sit in the room with me and hand me 1 basket full of stuff at a time. I was so trapped in being overwhelmed by everything. I truly didn't know where to begin. Having him decide for me meant everything. Once I was done with that task I was off!! I cleaned so much! I just needed the jump start. ❤ my husband for kick starting me into motion.
I love this!!! It does help to have someone say, hey why not move that there? Let's start here. Making the first step can be the hardest part. He's a keeper!!!!❤
@AverageAufa because it can lead to just him doing it, and it removes some of the independence that comes with over coming issues. If you don't take personal control you can cycle back round to it
I went through years of depression. It showed in my housekeeping. My best friend, who also suffered from depression gave me the best house cleaning advice ever...commit yourself every day to 5 minutes of cleaning. Give yourself permission to quit at 5 minutes if you absolutely can't continue. It works wonders bc once you start washing the dishes, you will want to finish.
You have a great fiend there! I have been similar but do half an hour or so morning & after evening meal.. Its just a quick tidy around, washer load, kitchen wipe down & a bathroom quickie. If I feel up to it I will mop or hoover. sort/clean a cupboard or drawer but if feeling not great, keep it to a minimum. It helps when you get up in a morning to see everything looking reasonable.. Perfection is out of reach right now but that's OK!! Also mini sense of achievement. Sending best wishes to you. x
@@emmsue1053I do something similar to both of you but instead of using a specific time frame I've turned it a type of game with random numbers. I just pick a random number, like 14, each morning and clean or tidy or de-clutter 14 things. It can include taking out 1 bag of garbage and washing and re-filling the cat's water bowl as 2 things. How I categorize things, e.g. washing all the cutlery being "1 thing" or every pot scrubbed counting as 1 each depends on how depressed/energetic I am that day and if I'm feeling really good I'll usually do a "bonus" 1 or 2 things like picking up all the dirty cups or plates throughout the house and counting that as one _bonus_ chore that I didn't _have_ to do but did anyway just because I could, and it feels like getting one of those gold stars teachers used to put on class assignments for a job well done. I come from a family of hoarders, who almost all also suffer from depression and turning it into a game is what worked for me. I think many of us just need some doable goal to accomplish to give us that boost that we are accomplishing something even if the day-to-day goal, or how we pick it, varies for each of us.
This is also a great ADHD tool. The paralyzing task initiating..but convincing yourself "just 10 minutes" and usually then the ADHD hyper focus kicks in.
I once read an article about a man who remodeled an old house by working 15 minutes a day. He could work longer if he wanted to, but all he had to do was 15 minutes every day. For myself, when I'm feeling overwhelmed, I do something I learned in Al-Anon: just do the next thing. Once I get started, I'm OK. Good luck everybody!
Baby steps are a “must” ! My depression doesn’t owe me but I clean 1 thing at the time ( sink, bathtub, mirror, pot etc) then I reward myself ( RUclips, game, show, nap )
I appreciate the level of restraint you have with limiting your scrubbing power as to not decimate someone's kitchen with those guns. Not all heroes wear capes.
I read an awesome book years ago, on depression. It had the truest, best advice I’ve ever heard! And it works, every time, even if you’re not depressed, but have no motivation. Here it is…..RIGHT ACTIONS create RIGHT feelings. So instead of saying “I don’t FEEL like cleaning my kitchen.” Do 1 RIGHT ACTION, sort and rinse dirty dishes. You’ll FEEL a little better, and motivated. The more RIGHT ACTIONS you do, the better you FEEL. Try it! The reason I read the book was to help & encourage my depressed brother, who could/would not even get out of bed. When he got up to pee, I asked him to walk to the mailbox and back. But he could only get to the front porch. The next time he walked down the stairs. Next to the mailbox. Eventually we were walking around the block each day. He felt better and better and was motivated to do simple additional tasks. Baby steps people! Baby steps! Depression is real, but so are doing RIGHT ACTIONS, a little at a time. Thanks for the tough love today! Your words are true and sincere, God bless you!
Well Cornbread, you did it, I cleaned the kitchen. Was feeling down, using doctor news as an excuse to lay around. Watched this video, got my but up and did it. Everything is still the same as was , but…my kitchen is clean. Now I can take on my little chunk of the world with my head held high. You give me that tough love Cornbread, I need it!
Sounds like you are going through something tough. Having a clean kitchen when you get up in the morning helps just a little to face the day. My best to you.
Thank you so much for the tough love. I really needed it! Over the last two days (maybe a total of 5 hours due to mobility/balance issues), I’ve started working on my stove and kitchen counter, and have transported (on my walker!) 8 big bags of garbage, and done my first load of dishes. I can see parts of the counter and the stove top. I’m feeling so proud of myself right now. I also did some meditations, to reinforce my intentions to keep on weigh the cleanup! FYI I’ve been dealing with severe depression, PTSD and a hoarding disorder. Thank you so much for what you are doing for this gentleman and others!
@wendyhannan2454, thank you so much for your encouragement. Over the past few months I have made progress - slowly! - and the kitchen and bathroom have been completely done. I am working very hard at maintaining them clean and uncluttered. Currently working on my storage room. I need the room in there before I start on my living room as I know there are some family things I will need to store until I am ready to deal with them. It’s a slow process but I am finding it very rewarding albeit challenging!
I just really appreciate the kindness and compassion you have for the people you help. I’m an RN who works with a very specific population. I see folks with mental and physical illnesses and other struggles who could benefit from this kind of help. I know some of the comments you and Clean with Barbie receive are nasty people ‘accusing’ you of copying Aurikaterina. But the reality is, there can NEVER be enough people to help all of the folks in need. I’m grateful that ALL creators that do this work are able to earn a living (or at lease some funds)while helping others. Also, sappy stuff aside, as a child of the late 70’s and ‘80’s, I appreciate the jokes (RIP Iron Shiek!). And as someone who loves a good running joke, I HIGHLY APPRECIATE that you have NEVER repeated a city in your ‘they call me (insert title here) back in (random city)’ gag!!!! I LOVE that! Lol!
@@Andie- The type of houses she cleans also look very different because she is overseas. I appreciate this channel because it looks like homes around here in Illinois.
You were in prime form today. Had me laughing my butt off. Some great suggestions for people struggling with depression. The inertia of depression is so difficult to overcome and tackling just one thing is enough for some days. Often doing one thing leads to another thing. It shifts the energy. Opening the windows and letting light in is solid advice. I really look forward to your videos every week. I'm happy that you were able to find a way to deal with the super difficult issues in your own life cuz you bring laughter to so many. You deserve to be happy and you are spreading it around. Keep slappin those dirty dish butts into submission 🤭 Thanks cornbread lovehog!!
Honestly just doing little things like opening the curtains and windows really does help. I had a breakdown last year and was trapped in the cycle of dark rooms and dark moods. My boss said “just force yourself out into the garden for 5/10 mins and feel fresh air. I didn’t think it would help but I did it and it really did lift my mood. Even if it was 3am, just sitting there in the fresh air gave me enough motivation to do little things like cleaning the dishes, clean one area of a room or do a wash load of clothes. Very journey starts with first steps, they don’t have to big ones, as long as you’re going in the right direction, it doesn’t matter how long it takes. Love your videos and I love that you have such empathy, compassion and understanding of your client’s situations. You don’t judge and that’s just as important to those people as the actual cleaning. ❤
I have never done this, but your comment made me cry and smile at the same time!! If you ever feel like you just need a person to acknowledge you and your worth, please just reply back...even if it's 25 years from now!! We ALL MIST HAVE EACHOTHERS BACKS AND SPREAD THAT LOVE!!
I agree. It sounds too simple, but 25 years ago with a teen age son, we were living in a tiny garden apartment with windows covered in black out curtains and I was deeply depressed. Opening the blinds one day and letting in the light was the first step. Now I am tutoring a woman on how to clean her house and keep it maintained. It may take a year, but I am determined that she will be empowered to appreciate her home, a little gem of a cottage.
@natalie7651 Keep fighting the good fight!! Your selfless deeds are what this world needs!! Together we CAN help a hurting world 1 , just 1 , clean dish, open window, that turns to a clean window and that opens up the world!! God bless you!!
Thanks for the reminder about opening curtains and blinds. I have dealt with depression for over 40 years. I used to open windows as soon as I got up. I no longer open them. I just sit in my room in complete darkness. I was on meds and they were working so well. I ran out. I called for an appointment with my doctor but she didn't have an appointment for almost 4 months. She refilled other medicines but not these pills. Only a month and a half until I will see my doctor. for now I will do what you said. I will open my blackout curtains when I get up! Thanks for the reminder. Oh, I will clean my microwave today also! I just got two more bottles of alcohol so I can be a cleaning fool today!
U need to find a new dr who will always either fit u in so u get your refills ON TIME, or just refill them once, w/the umderstanding u will see him/her at the soonest appt u can get-which u obv should grab! (If u poss can). Dr’s know pt’s who SUDDENLY r forced 2 STOP taking meds they’ve already been on daily/consistently 4 at least a month, CAN SUFFER SEIZURES/or other SERIOUS PHYS/Mental/emotional reactions (like withdrawal, even tho ppl think that’s only w/ pain killers. Nope! If U r forced 2 abruptly stop any anti:depressant/anxiety prescription -like Prozac/Xanax/sleeping pills? U can end up suddenly feeling even FAR WORSE than u did b4 u started taking it. Pls call around to see if there’s any others dr’s within driving distance from u. I bet there’s at least a couple (or prob more) who will be grateful to have u as their new patient. Good luck!!! Ps: I know all this bc I’m a Dr myself-& would NEVER put u thru this “no refill” BS, ESP 4 an rx that’s WORKED SO GREAT 4u, & literally CHANGED YOUR LIFE! It GAVE u not just a “better “ life, it made it so much better that it FINALLY gave u the ability to FUNCTION SO MUCH BETTER, u could/should say this new medicine gave u A BEAUTIFUL LIFE WORTH LIVING!! As u deserve!! Best wishes, my friend. I’m so proud of you!!❤😅🎉👍🙋♀️
I used to get really depressed in winter. I lived in a long-winters environment and worked in the basement low-light environment. Eventually I learned about Low Light Syndrome, called SAD. I was so relieved to find out this wasn't just myself not trying hard enough. (Sometimes the guilt caused by that thought exacerbated the depression.) We did some research and found ways to increase my exposure to natural light waves . We also discovered some helpful foods to add to my diet. We bought a happy light which emits light waves like those from the sun. Each morning I sat with the light on while I read something inspirational. The positive change in my outlook was incredible. I've since moved to a sunnier climate and rarely need the therapy, but I now know the depression symptoms of SAD and how to treat it before it gets bad. I'm so grateful for the support my husband gave me! I think it is important to ignore the guilt that often accompanies depression and ask for help from any supportive source.
Anyone else come here for the jokes ? Personally I love cornbread …doy !! Seriously though, my favourite channel right now, great commentary on a very serious subject, some proper hardship here being lived by people everyday and you got this guy changing the world one clean up at a time. I have the utmost respect for all that he does and for the brave souls who let him in to help them, can be real hard to accept help. You’re bloody fantastic and there needs to be more like you. Carry on Sir 🇬🇧🧼🧺🙌
I grew up into a family that was more so emotional hoarders, holding onto things passed down to them. At some point I had a hope chest just filled with stuff handed to me. When I finally moved out last year I could breathe and get rid of the things I knew I didn't need. I don't have my family guilting me into holding onto things and for the first time, everything in my apartment has a place to go. It also has made cleaning so much easier!
Thanks for the pep talk. While listening to you I cleaned up the ceiling part of my microwave that was a baked on spaghetti sauce disaster. Then cleaned the rest of it. Doing something, even one thing is moving in the right direction. One little window in my kitchen lets in so much light and it's cheerful. Now going to watch this video and have a cup of coffee and tackle another spot. You work so hard that I trust you when you say to get up and do something. You're just trying to light a fire under us so we get back into the routine we've fallen out of when life knocks us down.
I used to hate cleaning the microwave, then I found a microwave cover and it's so much better now. I just checked amazon and they have some for not too much. It really really cuts down on cleaning the microwave and my whole family uses them religiously now. I has saved me so much time and work that I can put into other things. Good job cleaning!
As a middle-aged, slightly pudgy homeschooling mom, I'm definitely going to try spin kicking the dirt and grime off of everything in my kitchen tomorrow. Can't wait! You have totally given me the confidence that it'll work!!
That made me smile Kerianne between your spin kicking and Ashley's cheering you on. If you shatter some dishes in the process,,,Oh look, less dishes to wash. Win, win. With breakfast, school, lunch, homework, and dinner (My friend did this, totally worth it) you could probably use two dishwashers, washing machines, and dryers. My first thought was wouldn't it be nice if there was a service where they pick up your dirty dishes and brought them back clean...then I remembered that's what dishwashers are for...it has been so long since I had one.
Kerriann……..you go girl!!!!!!!! You’re as busy as anyone can be…….mom, teacher, caregiver,MOM!!!!!!! I’m a reasonably tidy person, but watching this guy and listening to his narration,he’s taught me easier more time saving ways to clean my spaces…….just keep watching….. go at a pace that’s good for you……..you’ll get there…….oh,look ……more dishes!!!!! Best wishes Kerriann……❣️😊❣️😊❣️
I, too, am a middle aged, slightly pudgy homeschooling mom, and I think that's a good idea! I will join you. Of course my balance is bad, too, so Ima have to be careful.😂
My mom passed 10 months ago. I had my weeks where I’ve did very little. It’s hard but I always make sure my kitchen and bathrooms are cleaned up if that’s the only rooms cleaned. Last couple days I’ve stayed home and deep cleaned my house back to what it was like before and started decluttering everything again.
I was putting off cleaning my kitchen so I sat on the couch and decided to come watch one of your videos. I literally got up as soon as I saw the title lol, I got the kitchen done with the video cheering me on. Thanks cornbread lovehog!
Mr Magic, thank you for the "tough love" talk. In my job, helping disable/seniors, most of whom suffered from some level of depression we would tell them to do 1 thing a day. For one person it was putting the dirty dishes in the sink and filling it with hot water and dish soap. Not even washing them, just getting them in the sink and soaking them. For others it is making their beds, getting dressed, emptying the trash barrel. Depression is debilitating but sometimes people just need to be told to get up and do one thing. It makes them feel better.
What you said about light and music is right. Our bodies are 70% water. Plants that don't get light do not grow they die. What you watch and listen to can greatly affect you. ❤
Your symmetry trick really works. I know people must appreciate you not getting rid of everything. Just clean, neatly pile on cleaned surfaces. Then smack the heck out of that stove.
13:27 - nice uppercut to that box. You showed it who's the boss. You're right about opening windows and curtains and feeling different about things. I live in a fairly dim house and find when I don't make the effort to open the windows or the front door I tend to not want to get dressed or want to slop around in house slippers. I work from home so no one really cares what I wear. But taking that first step to open up the house opens up my mind and gets me on the track of being productive and getting dressed. And then, who knows. I might actually do those dishes and clean the stove and do the laundry. There's probably a study somewhere about sunlight hitting the retina and transmitting attitude adjustment waves to the cerebral cortex. But we'll just call it Midwest Magic Logic and be happy with that.
It’s 2 am folks and I just got up and cleaned the tea kettle, top of the stove (crappy electric that’s seen better days) the cupboard next to the stove… all of it. Then rearranged the items around it. Wish I could show a pic of the difference it made. If my bf wasn’t sleeping and getting up early I would have kept going but didn’t want to wake him up. 💪🏽 I was deciding on a canister candle to put back on top of the back of the stove and then even THREW ONE OUT I didn’t like much or use off the table. 😜 boom. Thanks MMC
Three years ago I was hit by a mental illness including depression. I'm thankful that I'm able to talk myself into getting up & getting things done, but I understand that some suffer at such a degree that even if the salvation handle was at hand's reach that individual would not reach for it.
Yu, I liked how you put Salvation at arms reach and the attempt to reach for help isn't there. I've seen and heard individual's say if only the LORD would help me but their unwilling to open His Word and seek Him [Bible is living and active- it's God's Word]
I have watched this video many times but for some reason, it really resonated with me today. Especially the words "My depression doesn't own me". Life changing. Thank you. ❤
I am totally with you on the tough love thing. Sometimes when I'm feeling depressed or even just lazy, I try to reach something with my cane (bad knees) and draw it to me instead of actually getting up off the couch and picking up that thing. I literally have to tell myself - and sometimes I say it out loud - "Get up off your ass, Tammy and go get that thing." Sometimes when cleaning, I have to do just the slightest task to get myself inspired to do more. So maybe it's something as innocuous as picking up a piece of paper off the floor. And I totally agree with you about opening the windows and letting in the fresh air and light. Being able to do that ALWAYS lifts my mood! Just as a sidebar, I think your next t-shirt should be a listing of all the names you give yourself at the beginning of these videos. Maybe at the top it will say your usual welcome and then below it a list of all your names. That would be awesome!
Agreed! That one video with the long chemical name though ... lol ... might cost a fortune to print. Would kinda be like the shirts for the "Rabies Awareness Fun Run" the Michael Scott character had made in an episode of The Office. 🤣
As someone who has struggled with depression ( and continues to kick its ass) you can never forget that if you want out of that hell you are the only one who can make that happen. I love your message.....light makes all the shadows disappear! Also, having a warped, bizarre, and hilarious sense of humour is a Godsend!
Depression is no joke, and it is tough to start doing those everyday things like cleaning a dish or a load of washing. But once done that starts the momentum to do more and more. 💖💖
That first move is the hardest! I tell myself to get up, wash dishes, etc. I do things in stages also. I love cleaning for friends cuz I know how much they appreciate it but force myself to clean my own home.
You are absolutely right. I've had depressive episodes for decades now and it definitely has contributed to the times the household chores got away from me. Generally, the most difficult part is just getting motivated to get started. Even if the whole house is a mess, having just one room looking good feels great.
I would like to suggest that if it's at all possible, painting a room like this would help tremendously. Even if there is a motivational or financial issue, just get a sample jar for about $8 of high gloss white and paint the woodwork around one window. The change will be incredible and will lead to other things. I was lucky enough to have my son help me and my mood changed permanently. I wasn't depressed, just unmotivated. I had just moved into my own mobile home and should have been happy. But everywhere was brown paneling. It just brought me down.
I love your message. It's been my motto through 7 years of health issues, Ovarian Cancer S3, Blood Clots, Heart Bypass and more. I try to look at what I CAN do. Everyday I start with dishes and work on something else. Walking, I started at a tenth of a mile, I can do over a mile with breaks now. Baby steps are progress. I watch your vids to motivate me to do more! Thanks
I'm a fellow SURVIVOR pancreatic cancer left me diabetic and diabetes wrecked havoc on my body . Pure hell trying my best to recover. Nov 3 I'm having quadruple bypass and I'm scared but I am going to survive. I do the same push myself. That's why I survive. Sending u great vibes and strength. ❤
I love this advice. It really rings the bell of truth and I use these steps in my own life. The first thing I do in the mornings is open my curtains (unless it is cold outside- big old wooden window can be drafty). I also say to myself- I will get, at least, one thing done and it has sometimes been my oven! I used to find no problems finding the motivation to clean when I was younger. But now in my early 40's I find it is becoming harder and harder to really keep things dusted and scrubbed. I keep things mostly organized and generally clean- but the detailed cleaning I find it hard to get up and do. Plus- the amount of distractions has gone up... phone and computer games. I work a normal 40 hr work week and all I seem to want to do is just sit on my tookus. On a side note- I have two autistic boys 8 and 10. One really is into balloons right now... so my house is looking like a retired 60 year old depressed clown lives here. But your video here makes me feel better in knowing the things I say in my own head are right and that I really am doing the best that I can. Thank you.
Dear round house Johnny, I needed this. Thank you. A traumatic accident happened over the weekend to my son. I'm trying to get back into my cleaning "groove-thing". Taking care of him and life building up(in the form of a dirty house). I understand how quickly it can turn into a give up cleaning situation. I'm back on the broom and ready to clean. Thanks again! Dear bachelor pad, Thank you for having this done. You don't know how much it helped me get motivated.
Your video motivated me to get up and do something. I don't know if it's depression or just lack of energy but my home suffers at times. I get overwhelmed at all the mess and become discouraged. Like you said it's ok to not do it all once but just do something! Everytime I went to use the bathroom, I did something! First started with picking up the clothes from the floor snd so on. Now my bathroom is clean and I feel good and didn't overwhelm myself trying to clean the bathroom all at once but in increments. Thank You!!
I love your channel. I so miss my cleaning biz. I had it for Almost 25 years in Canada and then The Big C happened. I was forced to give up everything including selling my house and my biz....Your channel really inspires me to keep up my new life. I have had to restart everything in another country. And No, I have to learn a new language. I turn 57 soon and I Will Rebuild My Life. Thanks you smelly dirty cleaning man!!!!! I am a smelly dirty cleanng woman....i made my sons clean with me back in the day, but we wont go there now....😊
I just want to thank you for these videos! I grew up in a cleaning business' family and I have always kept my house really clean, but then covid hit and I went though a serious depression and was finally diagnosed and have gotten help. Me and my husband watch these videos and we have started to tackle one room at a time and my outlook has changed so much and our house if finally up to my standards again and Im thrilled. Also as a neurodivergent person I really enjoy your humor ^^
The natural light thing is unbelievably true. Whenever i have blacked out the light from coming into my room, as soon as i enter it i never want to leave my bed, however when i have the natural light i am so much more productive. GET RID OF THOSE BLACKOUT CURTAINS!!!!
4 hours is a a time crunch for the condition of the kitchen that you did excellent work on. If you are able to have enough time to clean the coffee pot, put a full coffee pot of white vinegar through followed by at least 3 pots of cold water. 4 aught (0000) stainless steel will help clean stove tops, chrome fawcetts of hard water deposits. It won't scratch as long as it's wet. I know that you are working with time limitations. I hope it helps a little. I really appreciate your sense of humor and your service for others.❤
Love the title. Stop putting off cleaning. GET UP! It is that simple. Of all the RUclips self help videos I have watched, yours actually effected a change in my life. Cleaning, like any other muscle, gets weaker the more you don't use it. The next thing, that voice inside your head-"this is too much" "I don't know where to begin" "I can't do this".... Over and over and over. It's incideous and relentless. Sometimes the biggest gains in life come from the hardest to accomplish. And these things also have the biggest payoff mentally.
There is no one management for depression. Therapy, medication, diet, exercise, sunlight, hobbies, etc. Each play a role but no one thing makes it magically vanish and all of those things require effort on our part. Often we didn’t get ourselves into the hole, but we will always be the one to have to work our way out.
Hey. Concerning running melted grease down the drain, it just ends up in a trap somewhere and has to be cleaned later. I find scrap paper and wipe it off into the garbage so as little as possible goes down the drain. Even with dish detergent, it still ends up somewhere for someone to clean. I think grease in the landfill is a better option if you don’t have access to grease recycling. Respectfully, and thank you for posting.
I save lightly used paper towels and use them to wipe off greasy and food-encrusted dishes, a trick my husband taught me. Now my dishwater stays clean the whole time I am washing dishes.
Dear Cornbread Love Hog, I firmly believe that each of us is here in our lives to make a contribution…and further…to share God’s love with others. I think that’s why your channel is so compelling. You get it…you understand what people are going through that results in their household circumstances…and you have an action plan! There is nothing that changes the energy and lifts a mood like cleaning up, organizing, and letting the sunshine in. Your advice works! So…now I have a new name for you…it’s, “Spin Kicking, Dirt Slapping, Mental Health Therapist from the Midwest”…or…”Unexpected Angel” for short. You are definitely making a difference for so many and your words of advice are just what many of us needed to hear today. Thank you kind soul…your good deeds shine brightly.
Thank you for providing the tough love. I know plenty of people can use the advice. I totally agree about the light in a room can make a world of difference to shift your mood.
I love how compassionate you are to inanimate objects (the sink) and it is amazing that you understand what they're saying to you. On the other hand, you are absolutely brutal with dirt
Someone told me once that if you can get yourself to do one thing; to shift your focus from how you feel in the moment to how you'd like to feel in the next moment and take an action toward attaining that feeling, then there's a good chance you can move forward through your depression, especially if you can work that into a gradual, gentle process and routine. That one thing may be asking for help, cleaning a stove, sweeping the floor, doing something for someone else, reading a chapter of a book that you've been meaning to read... anything that you don't normally do while depressed. There was definitely some trial and error involved, but the key was that it can't be doing the thing(s) you usually do when you're feeling blue 'cause chances are, if you do it and you still feel blue, then it's not the thing that can give you relief. For example, if you normally don't clean because of how you feel, cleaning something to try and catch the feeling you'd like to have breaks the pattern of behavior that keeps you trapped in your depression. For me, I had to start back even further by just figuring what the hell my patterns were as the days were just a blur of blackness and I hadn't even been noticing what I was or wasn't doing. Anyway, that was years ago. I never saw that as tough love but powerful truth, even though I hated it at first and didn't think I'd have the patience to stick with it. Turns out I hated hating myself more than I hated trying to change, so if I could give today's video two thumbs up, I would. I count myself as very lucky; I know not everyone can claw their way back to the surface without intensive treatment and intervention. Those are the people who usually won't ask for help and I just HOPE that there's someone who notices them and reaches out. Those old patterns try to creep back in sometimes, though. Gotta slap 'em back into submission! Thanks for reminding me to not be afraid of myself and to just keep putting one foot in front of the other... armed with lots of APC, of course! You rock, Cornbread.
There have been times when for over a month my daily routines have been interrupted totally by the number of times I have to be at the health clinic for the 2 people I give care to. When I get home after being at the clinic almost all day I made up this rule I call "do 10 things". So I pick an area that needs doing and put away, or clean 10 things to at least decrease the pile. I try to do that at least a couple times a day until I have more time to finish the job. At least I go to bed realizing that I did do something to improve the situation, so don't beat myself up.
This is great advice. People often overwhelm themselves trying to do everything at once. Just give yourself a modest goal, and see it through. It'll motivate you to do more.
I totally understand mental health issues and places like this. I'm the same. My kitchen and bedroom need my attention big time and told myself today to get up and at the least put a wash on and take out the recycling.... And I did. Some might read this and think 'big whoop' but I've had a lot go on in my life over two years. The main being the loss of my mum. Not going into it but some things have been traumatic. I'm going to get my place in order and get some help. Bless you for doing this to help someone. We need more understanding people in this world. ❤
I wish this dude well and that he gets out of any financial crud he's in. I'm sure it was a great relief and joy to him to find how well you cleaned/organized his kitchen. I have a regular sized colorful rubber band ball that I've had over 10 years (I still love it) and I hope his awesome rubber band boulder still brings him joy and brightens up his day in some lovely way!
Within the first 5 minutes I started cleaning my room while watching and listening to you. Thank you so much! Not gonna lie. Made me emotional. Lost my job and suffering depression as a mom of three is tough.
I am puzzled about how I found this page, but oh man... my whole nervous system has calmed down after watching a couple of your videos and recognizing myself and my depressive behaviors. Thank you for taking so much time and effort to normalize this painful truth and help folks feel hope again.
I just love your cleaning videos when I was young i use to clean people's homes like this to help them. Also, love your humor and comments. Makes me smile on the inside. Thank you for sharing and doing things for people. It feels so good to clean really dirty houses and when finished it is such a pleasure to just look at and smell. Wish I had the youth to do it still. Peace!
There have been days when the 'clean sink = clean kitchen' mantra has helped me a lot. I agree with the idea that if you can only get one thing done, do the dishes. Another idea that helped me and might help others (and I don't remember where I read or heard this) is to look around ... Anything you can do in one minute or less, do it right now. Yep you really can get 10 things done in 10 minutes!
I think what you do is absolutely wonderful! I get motivated to clean from watching your videos. I admire how you help people. Please keep up the great work!
You are so right about just starting out slow, if that's all you can manage. Just go forward, even if it's a baby step. I fell ill with C19 at Christmas, and felt so sick I literally lost track of time. Many days, if I just made it to the bathroom, and to the kitchen for hydration, I had to count that as a successful day. It's taken 6 months to get the house straightened out. And that happened one thing at a time, one day at a time.
I suffer from Major Depressive Disorder (MDD), it was so much worst last year. I just couldn't even get up from bed to brush my teeth let alone to shower or to clean my house. Thank god im feeling so much better now and i managed to get the entire apartment cleaned. I started 1 section at a time instead of trying to clean the entire place and feeling overwhelm before even the clean started. I remember the first day when i took the garbage bin plastic and sat in the middle of house feeling helpless, useless, stressed out. I almost lost it there but then i got up and motivated myself. I know i deserve a clean and peaceful home as much as everyone else. Today im living a better life at least up to this point. There were days i felt like shit but i manage to overcome those days❤
Such good advice. Many times, I set a goal for the day, then fall short and feel like a looser. Then I realize, I at least did SOME things. Your advice has helped me get started and not look at the whole room and be lost before I begin. Thank you for your good works.
You're a motivational speaker, too. What _can't_ you do?? Seriously, you inspire me. I don't have hoarding tendencies (actually, cleaning helps ease my anxiety and takes my mind off of my troubles), but the number of people I've seen comment on your posts saying how _they_ were inspired by your kindness and understanding to tackle their own messes... just the best way to start off a new year. Edit: That's crazy... we have that exact same stove! Desperate to get years of (other renters') mess off of the removable cast iron bits (the grate? The bit on which the pot or pan sits on a gas stove).
I LOVE how you explain what you are doing (and most importantly to me) why. I have a disability and no energy, but if I can focus on the goal, (and why) I can push myself to keep going a while longer. Thank you so much!!!
Hey Cornbread! Great video! I also love that you didn't go into detail about this person. It always makes me happy when it is kept private. They deserve that. Love the motivation in here too. Thanks!
thank you--my art room is really bad--piles and piles of stuff--at least there are not food items in there. I am overwhelmed but took a page from you and today the only thing on my list is cleaning under the desk. Thank you for the ninja spin kick to the butt to get me moving!
Regarding insect infestations in the kitchen, another huge thing that I've done for my whole adult life is to keep ALL food in your pantry or cabinets in airtight containers. EVERYTHING. I learned this one fast when I moved out to go to grad school. I don't worry about the stuff in the fridge or freezer, but absolutely everything in the cabinets -- ex. pasta, sugar, flour, crackers, cereal -- is in a sealed container. I'm compulsive about few things, but this is one of them. NOTHING goes into my kitchen cabinets until it's been enclosed in an airtight container. And most times when you buy food, you'll end up with excellent tupperware-lke containers, even large ones if you get stuff like big containers of potato salad or deli soup.
Where did you go to grad school? ex. = except e.g. = for example I agree with you. I like using mason jars as they cost much less than fancy containers.
Love a man that knows how to clean 😊!!!! And the best part is you are a pro in every sense of the word!!😉 There is nothing more rewarding than making your home so clutter free and clean❤️
Once again your humor brightened my day and made me laugh plus you threw in some gentle, "tough love" that made me smile. I have to agree with the open window, fresh air and sunshine advice. I also am addicted to sitting on the lawn in the rain, even in a downpour. I have sat there in the rain for over an hour at times. Left a warm spot on the lawn. It is somehow very refreshing and uplifting.
As someone who may possibly have the summer version of Seasonal Affective Disorder (my mood instantly lifts on dark or grey, especially cold and rainy days... too many warm sunny days in a row and my mood absolutely tanks. my depression/anxiety issues are always worse during the middle of the summer. sometimes almost nonexistent mid winter)... yes, I do love me a room with natural light. You can still get it on a cloudy day. Open up those blinds/curtains and let the outside light come in. It's a different vibe for sure. But yea... watching your videos has motivated me to do some more cleaning lately. I pick one thing a day at this point. You've given me some solutions to cleaning issues I had almost given up on. Like our stained ceramic sink in the kitchen. I like that sink but have had no luck getting it clean on my own. Then I saw how you cleaned one with Bar Keeper's Friend and toilet cleaner... guess who's got a shiny white kitchen sink for the first time ever! (it was already scratched and stained when we bought the place) Also, that Mr Clean spray... my vent hood has never been so clean. It's always been an enormous pain to clean. I didn't know what I was doing. I watch you and Auri and now I know how to clean it! These types of things are giving me motivation to keep them clean and to work on other areas of the house as well. This weekend, it's going to be the wood floors! Doing it one bite at a time over here.
Looks a lot better. I used to be very messy. I got better and now my house is clean. Not on your level, but clean and I'm in control. Any depressed people should realize there is no shame in seeking out mental health treatment. If someone doesn't have health insurance and they live in a city with a university, they can get it free/reduced price by approaching the medical school (if the university has one) or even the department of psychology/social work. There are opportunities available for people who need help.
This video really helped me. I have had 6 knee surgeries and I work in a grocery store so im standing all day so its so hard to want to do anything that includes standing. But watching you it has helped me to do small things little at a time. And not feel so overwhelmed.
🤣 The flex method 😂 Dude you crack me up!! I do get up everyday and do something. Dishes, trash, cutting grass, paying bills, laundry and taking care of 2 bulldogs. I absolutely love and appreciate you brother!!!!!
My issue is too much stuff. Since my husband passed away 6 years ago I have bought so much camping and prepping gear. Lots of paperwork “ I have shredded so much!! Just retired on may 31. Trying to keep up, although it’s difficult, I still will try until I get it all done!! You rock!! Thank you!!
Thank you. I found you about 2 months ago and you have helped me so much through laughter and watching you has helped make my house, and my mind come back to life!! I God made you for this Earth to help bring compassion to an area most people won't address. THANK YOU FOR EMPOWERING US TO PUSH PAST WHAT OUR BRAINS TELL US WE CAN'T DO❤ APC FOR LIFE😂
I love your videos and how you break the overwhelming into small doable tasks. One thing I've done to make handwashing dishes easier for myself is to use a large can or a jar for all the dirty utensils and fill with HOT water & a good squirt of dish soap, letting it soak while I tackle everything else, sorting like items with like items. I keep a couple of white wash basins nearby to load and keep things sorted. For some reason, it goes quicker for me when I am doing all utensils, all cups, all bowls, etc. Thank you for your compassion for those who need it most!
Congrats, Mr. Police Academy 5! I enjoy your humor and your kindness. You deserve the RUclips Hexo-Platinum Lava Spin-Kick-In-the-Face Plaque for all the help & hope you give people!
It feels kind of refreshing seeing a Man cleaning and also commenting. I thought I was the only one in my mind talking with the things I clean! Lol. Thank you for helping this person and I hope he gets better soon with anything he is going through.
Cornbread love hog tough love, I totally agree that light and air movement help. Doing the dishes always makes a place look tidy. If you do the dishes before bed it’s lovely to walk into a kitchen with an empty sink in the morning and it makes a great start to the day too. Have a great weekend. Mary, Joes wife 👏💪👍🙏💐
I get bad flare ups of arthritis. One thing that helps me is knowing Monday is bathroom cleaning day. If all i do is run toilrt cleaner in the bosl and pick up stray towels, it's good enough. I can scrub shen i feel better. If i scrub well enough, it can go a week or two without touching it. Just keeping up when you can helps. My counter looks just as bad as this guy's though. Children, though XD i try to do a load a day, minimum. Same with clothes. Keeps it under control. I'm often folding yesterday's clothes, but i get a load a day done. Just those three things makes it easier to tackle the rest of the mess when i'm up to it. Glad you share these videos. I'm learning my tricks have been really solid. My mom is a hoarder, and breaking the bad habits i had made a world of difference. But nothing would have happened if i didn't start.
Just learning that I am Au80HD 2 years ago made it easier to see what was keeping me from doing things and figuring out how to work with my brain in order to get things like cleaning done. I still have physical health issues that hinder me but I'm am doing so much better being able to clean things when they need it. Though the kitchen is sensory hell for me, I'm glad it's really my husband's domain so I don't have to be in there all to much. I'm so grateful ppl like you are out there helping those who need it.
I have empathy for people who struggle regardless of the reasons. I have mobility issues so I do small things. And I have a few rules for myself. I make sure my kitchen is clean after every use. I don’t leave dirty dishes anywhere but the sink and then I wash them. I don’t eat or drink in my bedroom. Just small things. You are very nice to help others. I wish you all well.
No matter what’s in your way, you just need to choose 1 activity and build from there. I document my activities as I complete them per day. Make my bed, write it down. Washed the dishes, write it down. Washed white clothes, write it down. I write down my accomplishments vs what I didn’t do or complete.
First, ❤️ your sense of humor. I got two things done tonight. Small, but done after watching this. I’ve inherited a beautiful home. My brother was a mess. He died at 56. Never left this house. My parents, and I, dealt with his abuse. My parents left me as the executor of the estate. 15 acres😞.I work full time. I used to have a immaculate house. Now, on my days off, I can’t make myself try to clean this place.I’m kind of lost, in too much. But I saw this, I’m going going to try again tomorrow. Thank you.
I’m such a fan, can’t believe the before and after! The fact that you do it for free is just heart warming, the world needs more magic just like you! I’d really like to start doing something like this I just don’t know how to get started around my area. I live in Taylor Michigan and would love to help people in my community. Cleaning has always been my thing. Something that I was really good at from the time I was a little kid has been my thing since I was a little kid. I would appreciate any advice you could give me an thanks again for making cleaning, funny and magical.❤️🙏👍
❤ my husband for kick starting me into motion.
wait why couldn’t he do the chores together with you?
It feels great, doesn't it?
❤! Starting is the hardest part. Great teamwork, I am glad you found a way to do it together. Way to go!!
😂❤
ToyDadScott, you are so right..he is superscrubber. No mention of the lovely Jason though. I'll have to watch the next one now...
Respect
Normally I don’t like the commentary by most You Tubers, but I enjoy this guy’s commentary. He’s very down to earth, knows what he’s doing, and funny.
I enjoy his voice, it's like ASMR for my brain. 😅
Agree
@Karen Holt Do you happen to remember the name of the book, please?
@@E.Meyers - I can’t remember and have looked for it myself for years!

Feelings Follow Behavior: The Key to Unlocking New Habits

Well Cornbread, you did it, I cleaned the kitchen. Was feeling down, using doctor news as an excuse to lay around. Watched this video, got my but up and did it. Everything is still the same as was , but…my kitchen is clean. Now I can take on my little chunk of the world with my head held high.
You give me that tough love Cornbread, I need it!
❤️❤️❤️
Sounds like you are going through something tough. Having a clean kitchen when you get up in the morning helps just a little to face the day. My best to you.

Warmest thanks 😊 and the same to you 🩷
@@outlander_... I've finally learned that. Took me long enough!

Changes the whole day, doesn’t it 😊
Thank you so much for the tough love.
Margaret, I don't know you, but I am proud of you. Sending you loads of hugs..rolaters rock
Daisy, thank you so much for your encouragement and hugs!
Sending you lots of hugs 🤗 too!
I am proud of you. I wish you well.
Well done Margaret, it’s hard to see your way out some times. I wish this kind man could help you. You’ve made a start, that’s the main thing. 👍🙏
I appreciate so much how you address the mental health issues that accompany the chaos... you are most kind.
Lol!
You're right. Aurikaterina can't clean every house in the world. She's probably happy she inspired others to help out.
I like Midwest Magic's videos more, because he doesn't use background music, and I prefer his voice to hers.
Can’t beat Midwest Cleaning num-chuck spin kicking narration.
@@Andie- The type of houses she cleans also look very different because she is overseas. I appreciate this channel because it looks like homes around here in Illinois.
I bet AuriKatarina is happy to inspire others, if that's what is going on.
Wasn't laughing the butt off. It to big, am listening. Got to get moving. Nice job on that kitchen. 👍👍. Cornbread was funny though! ☺️
What a grand transformation. This gentleman should be inspired to keep his home tidy. You did such a good job, and you provided the fun! Patti
@@natalie-nn8jm You are full of life. Keep doing great things and you will see the light.

Set a goal for the day. Regardless of what it is. don't even have to have depression. Set a goal and get up and move.
Love the jokes, especially the moose ones.
Well done for breaking the cycle!! 🎉❤ ❤❤
@@bethhickm yes have one but some forget to use it. Great time saver.

You got this Kerriann 💪🏻
I bet you spin kicked the CRAP out of that kitchen. 🙌🏻
I had no clue how effective “spit” talking my surfaces would be. Soon I will be able to just flex the lint off my carpet

These cleaning videos are realistic. It’s tough to find this when a lot of cleaning motivation videos are already clean, nearly spotless homes.
Wise words!
💖👑
I have watched this video many times but for some reason, it really resonated with me today. Especially the words "My depression doesn't own me". Life changing. Thank you. ❤
I am totally with you on the tough love thing. Sometimes when I'm feeling depressed or even just lazy, I try to reach something with my cane (bad knees) and draw it to me instead of actually getting up off the couch and picking up that thing. I literally have to tell myself - and sometimes I say it out loud - "Get up off your ass, Tammy and go get that thing."
Sometimes when cleaning, I have to do just the slightest task to get myself inspired to do more.
Thanks
I'm a fellow SURVIVOR
pancreatic cancer left me diabetic and diabetes wrecked havoc on my body . Pure hell trying my best to recover. Nov 3 I'm having quadruple bypass and I'm scared but I am going to survive. I do the same push myself. That's why I survive. Sending u great vibes and strength. ❤
@yigalordbanette8044 Good luck tomorrow! I struggle with diabetes and thyroid disorder too and more. Everydays a battle but I just keep swimming 🏊♂️
Thank you.
Dear round house Johnny,
I needed this.
Dear bachelor pad,
Thank you for having this done. You don't know how much it helped me get motivated.
I'm so sorry. I'm wishing you the best.
@@seattlegirl2077 thank you. ❤️
I hope your son is OK! Or that he will be OK really soon!❤
@@jenpink4298 thank you ❤️
He has some serious recovery ahead. It was an ATV accident. Small brain bleed, broken finger, and one broken rib.
Good luck Jen you are making the good things happen
I just love the sped-up sound of the scraper on the stove! It’s like the world’s tiniest jackhammer. 😂
Love your attitude...better than most therapists🙏♥️
4 hours is a a time crunch for the condition of the kitchen that you did excellent work on.
If you are able to have enough time to clean the coffee pot, put a full coffee pot of white vinegar through followed by at least 3 pots of cold water.
4 aught (0000) stainless steel will help clean stove tops, chrome fawcetts of hard water deposits. It won't scratch as long as it's wet.
I know that you are working with time limitations. I hope it helps a little.
I really appreciate your sense of humor and your service for others.❤
Yours was the first video on my feed this morning. I needed that tough love lecture! Thank you for the inspiration and the laughs, Cornbread!
Yes! I’ve worked very hard to get myself out of that hole many times
@@Lisa_S117 keep fighting. I always say. Don’t let the bastards win, I have no idea who they are, but dang it they aren’t going to win.
I absolutely agree with you 100%!
I get depressed if things are a mess, so these videos are so calming. Thank you!
❤
Compassion is so good . We should all have this for one another.
Aaawwweee....you'll get another job but you're correct, being a Mom of 3 is really tough and we know. Good job, we're behind you.

I like that you talk about the products you use! I've tried many a products....Most are a waste of $$. I need stuff that works!!
Your videos have inspired me to take on my biggest project yet my closet, I haven’t finished it yet but it already looks so much better
Thank you for the informative video. Also thank you for showing mercy to the sink with your supreme power!
Hey Cornbread! Great video! I also love that you didn't go into detail about this person. It always makes me happy when it is kept private. They deserve that. Love the motivation in here too. Thanks!
You are a gift to so many! Thanks for your empathy and compassion! I needed to hear this today!❤
thank you--my art room is really bad--piles and piles of stuff--at least there are not food items in there.
Where did you go to grad school?
ex. = except
e.g. = for example
I agree with you. I like using mason jars as they cost much less than fancy containers.
I think glass works better than plastic.
@@Nyx773ex can be short for example, seems like you still understood what they mean. Grad school is for many things, not just grammar 😇💩
@@guhrizzlybaire Google "eg vs ex". All the reputable sources state that e.g. is "for example" and that ex is incorrect
@@Nyx773 …and you found it necessary to call someone out on THAT? It just goes to show that education doesn’t stop someone from being an idiot.

Your words to help with depression are spot on. The kitchen looks wonderful! God bless ❤

Very true! No matter how much my depression is trying to control my life, the first thing I do every morning, is open my curtains, and make my bed.
I'm sure that guy got more motivated from having his kitchen cleaned......great video of lots of chuckles.
No matter what’s in your way, you just need to choose 1 activity and build from there. I document my activities as I complete them per day. Make my bed, write it down. Washed the dishes, write it down. Washed white clothes, write it down. I write down my accomplishments vs what I didn’t do or complete.
I definitely have physical and mental health issues that definitely gets me stalled in my tracks way too often. Thanks for the video, Cornbread!
I love your suggestions of doing one small, simple task. It can make a difference and lead to more being done. ❤
God bless you sir, for helping people, cause you know... that's how you roll. I think you are a wonderful person 😎

Thank you.

Cleaning has always been my thing. Something that I was really good at from the time I was a little kid has been my thing since I was a little kid. I would appreciate any advice you could give me an thanks again for making cleaning, funny and magical.❤️🙏👍
