It is called Santur or Santoor. Originated mainly in Perisa or the Great Iran where they ran the world for almost 2000 years, see below link for an inspirational performance using this instrument. ruclips.net/video/paNQraOETEE/видео.html
The hammered dulcimer has been my favourite instrument since I first heard it, forty years ago. This is the best recording of it I have ever heard. It helps that it is a great tune, of course. Subscribed... much more please!
And who are you The proud lord said That I must bow so low? Only a cat of a different coat That's all the truth I know. In a coat of gold or a coat of red A lion still has claws. And mine are long and sharp my Lord As long and sharp as yours. And so he spoke And so he spoke That lord of Castamere But now the rains weep o'er his halls And no one's there to hear. Yes now the rains weep o'er his halls And not a soul to hear.
@@vbailysecret Actually this is a Dusty Strings D650 which is a 19/18/9 instrument, much bigger than a 14/15. And, the Santoor is what this instrument is called in India. It originated in Persia and has spread all over the world so there are many different names. This one is an American Hammered Dulcimer which is a diatonic instrument with fifth tuning. Many instruments around the world are chromatic by nature.

I know Ramin, getting ready for the upcoming tour. I'll send this to him. Very nice version. Like the full sized instrument with the dampers as well. Is that a Smith?
Hi Katie. I recently discovered this video (and you). It is beautiful and I've decided to try and learn the song. Thanks so much for your youtube posts. Cindy.
I'm not sure the range of your instrument, but on their D650 the base bridge goes down to an A2. I retuned the B2 (right above that A) to a Bb. That's the only note I retuned. Ultimately I found this tune to be loads easier to play in E minor. I don't have perfect pitch, but the original is in D and every time I approached the instrument the tune in my head was in D....so I went with it. If it doesn't bother you to do so, I really do recommend playing it in E minor. It'll make your life easier ;-)
watched 10 seconds. This. Needs. More. Clicks! ... for real. Quality Recording. Video as well as audio-wise! Great sutff! edit: I watched the whole video after writing the comment :)
Absolutely beautiful Katie. Do you mind to share what you are using to record such a nice, clear sound which we know is not always easy on this instrument?
👏👏👏👏👏👏👏🌸🌸🌸🌸🌸🌸You played very beautifully. Your instrument sounds great. I'm a musician and I live in Montreal and I wish to buy an instrument like yours. May you please guide me? Good luck
Beautifully done Katie. Could you tell me which model that is? I just started playing on a 15/14. But want to save up for something like that one. Again. Just beautiful. Thank you
Very beautiful, i love your interpretation, you play very very great ! (are you a council or a web site for me to buy this wonderful instrument a future day ? i'm french guy and so fan to this :))
I really like these hammered dulcimers, but frankly the instrument is just too expensive for most people these days. As far as a musical hobby, in my area you can find a decent used piano for around $500. These, though they sound great, and look beautiful, run around $3K and up. I would rather get a new car lol.
C Rutherford comparing buying a used piano to buying a new hammered dulcimer is a bit of a false equivalency. A top-of-the line hammered dulcimer will run about $6000 NEW. A top of the line piano will cost tens of thousands of dollars. I don’t know where you are buying your new cars, but pianos are far closer to the price of a new car than a hammered dulcimer. A student grade piano will run $3-5k new. A student level hammered dulcimer will cost well under $1000. Used instruments are difficult to compare since the prices are whatever the owner asks, but just in the last week I’ve seen lucky folks score decent used instruments for under $500. That’s being said, if you are interested in learning the hammered dulcimer, I can definitely assist you in getting a great new instrument with stand and case for well under $1000. The best guitars run around $6000 as well. Top of the line instruments are not cheap, no matter what you play. Hammered dulcimer are actually quite a bit cheaper than most instruments. But just as a beginning piano player doesn’t start with a $30k Steinway, A beginning dulcimer player doesn’t start with a $6000 hammered dulcimer.
Pam s Thanks for your question. I always keep the C# on left bridge tuned down to a C. For this piece, I tuned the low B on the right bridge down to a B flat. The rest of the instrument is standard. I play this piece in D minor, which is the original key.
I am sorry, I don't currently have the rights to distribute written arrangements of this piece. I just arranged this by ear; adapting it to the instrument, but staying true to the original. You may be able to purchase sheet music somewhere online. This video is in the original key of D minor, however E minor is much more feasible on dulcimer, so if you can find a version in E minor, I'd start there.
The hammered dulcimer and santur are definitely related. It is turned very differently from a santur. Many instruments around the world are evolved from the ancient Persian instrument, including the modern day santur. However, the hammered dulcimer is no more a “copy” than the piano.

@@souvikmukherjee8497No, it's a hammered dulcimer. The santoor is very similar but it's not the same.
This is one of the most well-tuned hammered dulcimer recordings on youtube. You should absolutely record more pieces.
I still saying that most of the colour of the dulcimer comes with the out of tuneness, when its well tuned it almost sounds like a harp :P

Belleza total. Gracias.
Imagine at you wedding they started to play this song. And suddenly someone stab your bride and whisper: "your ex sends her regard".
I audibly gasped.
Bruh moment
Thank you for that! You are a totally sick dude, and I enjoyed it!
Maybe you should finish the Fire and Ice books?
This is sending shivers down my spine, beauty, melancholy and menace all intertwining
I can’t even describe how beautiful and rich I think it is! Thank you for sharing❣️🤗🎶
I've not seen the Game of thrones but the music sounds wonderful. Thank you Katie.
Amazing and so powerfull, thanks for to share!!!!
This masterpiece needs more likes from Lannister fans!. Hear me roar !
Why only Lannister fans??
I am suggesting this to Ramin Djawadi, for the next GoT Soundtrack!
Thanks very much!
I wrote him on facebook because there was no email address... Didn't get a reply.
Imagine, when Arya (whose theme song, needle is originally played on Santoor) kills Cersi, that's when we should hear this =)
Beautiful - your instrument has a fabulous sound. Thanks for sharing.
Subbed. This is beautiful. Best hammered dulcimer playing I've heard in years!
Hit the wrong button. This is wonderful. She is an amazing artist and teacher
This. makes me so happy
I didn't know I needed this until I just heard it. Have you read the Kingkiller Chronicles? This instrument would be perfect for an Eolian Scene.
Beautiful yet haunting. Such a great cover!
Exquisite
Awesome 😍😍 loved it more than any of the other versions of it......

Still I am not sure whether I like more the Dulciforte of Master Works or the D600 of Dusty Strings... But I have to learn this! 😁 🎼
I want a dulcimer like this one.
Well, done Katie! :)
Josh,,,Im impressed,,,it was a very good compliment by an outstanding artist

Hi Tim, I am located in Northern Illinois but I do online lessons live via Skype. There may also be someone in your area who teaches.
