  • Subwoofer hum SUUUUCKS, and here's how I dealt with it. There can be a LOT of causes, and it's a process of elimination...Vv Click "SHOW MORE" vV
Subwoofer hum is something I've avoided until recently. Part of that was luck, part of it was equipment.
    Affiliate links to cables:
SVS Subwoofer cable, probably the best option:
    sub101.link/RCA
Mediabridge cable, worked in the home setup, but in the SUV, and I still had hum:
    sub101.link/Mediabridge-Subwo...
This video was not a "Monster bash", and this particular cable has reviews stating that subwoofer hum was resolved: sub101.link/Monster-Subwoofer...
I wish I'd run SVS cable in the SUV, it might have solved the problem, where the mediabridge did not.
Both cables fixed the hum in the house, where cheap cables failed. The SVS cable in the SUV might not have resolved it either, where grounding the RCA to the chassis did fix it with the Mediabridge.
I think this might be a case where better cable build and design could overcome more difficult problems. Where one cable might fix hum in a low interference situation, it might not fix a high interference situation. This is speculation, but it makes sense to me.
Prior to this, I never had hum. I knew SVS cable was good at resolving hum. As my channel is end user focused (That's you!), and personal experience based (me), I had no business making a video about it.
While it was irritating at the time, finding the fix was great, so I could share it with confidence.
Just remember that cables might not fix your hum.
If your sub hums without the RCA input connected, it's either a serious ground issue, but more likely it's the sub itself.
You might also have ground issue, resolved by making sure both subs are on the same wall outlet (or same surge protector).
You might also have the subwoofer cable connected to the wrong RCA on the AVR.
The nature of record players, tape players, and other non digital sources mean you could have a "normal, light hum". Best way to check is to use mute, or switch to a digital source.
Or the AVR/amp/deck itself could be the problem.
Hopefully this helps, I know this problem can be maddening, especially when intermitant.

    Welcome back sir.
Yeah I tried an isolated rca box of ebay. Worked ok.
Seems my TV antenna has a boster box and that was causing line interference. Cheers

Funny, I have all svs subs with all mediabridge cables. There are no problems to report yet , they seem to be a great match. Great video, as always keep them coming.

Mediabridge cables seem pretty solid. Only time I had hum was in the SUV, but that might be an extreme case.
      I appreciate your support!

@Subwoofer101 I've also heard that plugging your subwoofer into its own power conditioner or surge protector could help with hum. Any opinion on if this is true ? Again, don't shoot the messenger. This is something I heard, lol.

    • @Subwoofer101
      @Subwoofer101  10 месяцев назад +1

Great question, and I don't make a habit of shooting messengers on my channel. 🙂
We were all new at one point, and you obviously aren't new, given the equipment you're working with, but nobody deserves to be made to feel bad or foolish for asking questions.
I thought about this before answering.
I have no experience with it, but here's my hunch:
If the sub has hum without any input connected, it could help.
If it only has hum when it has an input connected, I would think it would be less likely to work, but still possible.
My thought would be that trying it with an active hum problem would be the only way to know.
Either it will work, or it won't.
I would definitely try proper cables first, and other diagnostics, but if that didn't work, it might be worth a shot.

@Subwoofer101 Thanks for the reply . And that's always been my way of thinking, troubleshooting safely, of course, is the best way to go about it.

I have been getting fairly loud humming from my sub (DefTech Powerfield 700) for quite a while now - 3 to 4 years. I just keep it unplugged until wanting to use it and then the sound generally drowns out the hum. This happens when it is plugged into a power source. And it doesn't matter what outlet or power block I use, it just keeps humming. Is that a sign of the amplifier going bad? Is it something that can be repaired? I just installed a new SB-1000Pro in my system and only turn on both when in full use as described above. The SVS sub has zero hum.

I got a hum in all my speakers after connecting a new amp into the mix from Rockville, I thought it was a cable or power source issue, nothing worked,, even with the amp off, so I went the not smart way and just removed the ground from the new amp, problem went away, back to whisper quiet system

I have rockville gear and I eliminated the hum by running a ground wire from the negative hi-level speaker out on the amp to the negative hi-level speaker terminal on the sub. Poooof hum gone. Ground the two chassis.

i think you meant to say hi level speaker input to the sub terminal but i tried this after reading your comment and it worked perfectly. thank you.

Seems like this would be the perfect application for the SVS wireless kit?

    • @Subwoofer101
      @Subwoofer101  11 месяцев назад

It didn't occur to me, but I could see it being useful over running the cable.
I have to wonder if hum induced near the AVR/amp subwoofer output would be transmitted wirelessly.

Thanks for the video. Unfortunately, the mediaBridge cable didn’t work for me. Still got hum from the subwoofer. I also changed plug socket and still hums. I am still searching for a solution? It could be the AV Receiver because the KEF subwoofer works fine with my audio equipment. Just experiencing humming with my home theatre setup 😩

@@shaolin95 Good news! I managed to stop the annoying humming noise. I had to attach a single cable (ground) to the back of the receiver and the other end to the rear of the subwoofer.

This is as useless video about hum. All this guy did was change cables for that he went on and on

Who hurt you? 😅 Yes, I changed a cable and it fixed my particular problem. But I don't think that was the only information I provided...
Some people might not believe a cable could fix it, or it might not be something they considered.
