A prey animal can very definitely be beaten into submission, or scared/coerced in other ways. Horses do things they don't want to do on a daily basis, if you think they don't you haven't been around them. If you, for example, had a piece of metal sitting against and hurting your tongue and the bars of your jaw, would you think twice about turning in the direction you would prefer to go? A chain under your chin, perhaps? If we're going to have this conversation, at least let's be honest about it.

He also ignores the fact that risk is part of life, horses hurt themselves all the time, even when they're in a nice field with a couple of trees they stand a risk of maiming themselves on a tree branch.
You don't need to have spent much time around horses to know that horses like: Fresh grass, being with other horses and running.
Activist types tend to make such stupidly false assertions that I can only assume that they are so catastrophically uninformed on what they're talking about they are blithely unaware of the depths of their ignorance. I used to break and exercise racehorses too. Granted, they have the best exercise levels and nutrition to keep them at their peak, but horses needs are more complex than that; they are stabled far more than an average riding horse, thereby being starved of the natural behaviours they need to keep them mentally healthy, such as mutual grooming and contact with other horses. These things are essential for ther overall wellbeing. If I had a dog, fed it the best quality foods and took it out for 2 good runs a day but the rest of the time it was caged and isolated, it would still be considered cruelty.

The race horses do not exactly have a choice in the same way a person does, but they are fed and given as much luxury at a high cost, and usually the care takers of the horses and even the riders show and develop a lot of love for the horses. In comparison to wild horses, they are protected from predators that actually may eat them alive being a race horse.
