I LOVED Wayne when he was the sports guy at KPIX. he also did 49ers Preview Show before every game. My dad and I never missed it. It was tradition at our house. RIP Wayne
Lions finished out of the playoffs with a 7-6-1 record, but they were still a good team, with many stars. They beat the powerful Chiefs 32-21 on Thanksgiving. I remember watching this game on TV--one of the best games of the year.
With all due respect to John Brodie, Lem Barney and Gene Washington, DB #37 Jimmy Johnson of the 49ers might have been the best player on the field full of good ones that day. Hall of Famer and often forgot about.
@@1959markie1 They have a deep stable of defensive backs in team history, aforementioned Phillips, Kermit Alexander, Bruce Taylor, Abe Woodson, but because they didn't play alongside Ronnie Lott, they are forgotten
Underrated historical matchup between San Francisco and Detroit. 1983 playoff, some old school 1950's matchups and some good 1990 games with Barry Sanders. Also the infamous Jim Schwartz/Jim Harbaugh "handshake".
And interesting that between 1971 and 1974 the Niners played on artificial turf while the Lions played on natural grass. Since 1979 the Niners have played on grass while the Lions have played on artificial turf. They overlapped on turf between 1975 and 1978.
I remember this one -- had to watch it on TV in a San Diego bar -- we talked the bartender into not showing the Chargers. It was intense as hell and a great victory for the Niners.
Do you see the pattern established here? The Lions show some promise. Fans get excited for the next season. The Lions disappoint. It's happened over and over again for 60 years. And what do the fans have to show for it?
Some big plays the refs got in on - moving the Lions back near the goal line twice , the Washington run, taking the punt fumble TD off the board. Still Lions against refs in 1971.
Lions haven't learned. Like in the last years game failed on 2 4th downs, G Landry failed on 4th in the 71 game. Campbell should go over that game film.
God bless the Sabols and NFL films. Especially during the 70s.
I agree. Their outstanding work continues to bring pleasure to football fans years after it was originally produced
NFL films have some of the best narrators and music

Detroit linebacker Wayne Walker played 15 seasons for the Lions and was sports director at KPIX, the CBS affiliate in the Bay Area, from 1974-94.
And was a color analyst for The NFL ON CBS

Artificial turf at Candlestick Park: What a terrible idea.
From 1971-1978 artificial turf, then natural grass
Bob Delaney was a damn good narrator....
Watched this game 52 years ago just before Christmas......remember it well.
NFL in 1971 was so much better than NFL (arena league) now.

All the great 49ers defensive players get overshadowed unless they played for Walsh. Nomellini, Wilcox, Hart

I remember watching this game in glorious black and white a few days after my 13th birthday.
Kind of cool seeing those shots of Candlestick under construction.
I Miss Candlestick Park
somebody actually misses that place. Omg...

Looks like “The Stick” was still under construction back in 1971 - or they were adding an upper deck. Hard fought, close game.

Niners first year at Candlestick. Scoreboard looks like it was brought over from Kezar! Lol!
i can still see Willie Mc covey running across that astro turf! 😆
The players took a beating every time they would hit that cement like turf. You could see it by their reaction.

What do you mean?
The refs were much more lenient in those days. Wilcox's helmet-slam should have gotten a 15-yard unsportsmanlike conduct penalty.
in those days removing your helmet was np and not a penalty
So would many of the tackles. The game was played from head-to-toe then.
