    As a data nerd I want to tell you how the average American home probably doesn’t have anywhere close to 300,000 things. An organizer who went into homes where people made enough to hire an organizer and felt overwhelmed enough to hire an organizer was asked how many items she thought were in the average American home and she said 300,000. The LA Times quoted her and now this “statistic” is quoted citing the LA Times. (It’s even in Joshua Beckers book). There was never any study just one person’s guess. This is used as an example in statistics classes to show how a made up statistic can become a “fact” with proper citation and still not be true.
    Someone made a RUclips video about how the average American home does not have 300,000 things. She and her husband have a baby and live in a three bedroom two bath house with a storage shed. They spent several days counting everything and had about 6,000 things.

      İ am quite minimal, have done big Declutters, but still feel like I have too much stuff. And even so, a lot of it is small items like art supplies and craft and stationery.... Those things don't take up a lot of space, they are small in size but they would add up to a big number, I'm sure.... Every piece of paper, every tube of paint, every coloured pencil .... That feels overwhelming

    • @Exploravore
      @Exploravore  2 месяца назад +3

      @naomifreya1481 don’t worry so much about the number- it’s not a contest. If those little things like art supplies bring value and joy to your life, then keep them!

    I love decluttering and organizing, and those things come naturally to me. I do, however, still really enjoy watching videos like this one because I occasionally come upon a new perspective or a different way of doing something that I can incorporate into my life. The gem from this video was your "Thank you, you have served me well" philosophy. I love that idea and plan to start implementing it myself immediately! I've been trying to unsubscribe from things lately and to avoid adding new subscriptions of any sort, but I've watched a few of your videos now and just had to hit that subscribe button today. Wow! You're the ONLY minimalist who has said anything even remotely related to my situation regarding costumes!! I have been a professional belly dancer my entire adult life and most of my costumes I made myself, sewing each and every bead by hand! Thinking about releasing these incredibly ornate costumes that I put so much time, care, and money into making and that have been such a huge part of my life is really difficult! However, several years ago, I had my first Material Possessions Burning Party and I burned a costume that held a LOT of significance for me! And everything was fine!! 😅💃🔥

    • @Exploravore
      @Exploravore  8 месяцев назад +2

      Ah I love burn ceremonies!!! And that is so cool you are a belly dancer I think that’s such a beautiful art. Ultimately the decision is yours, but I can tell you from my experience I did not regret giving away my costumes at all- I have pictures of them and that is enough for me. I even gave away my USA apparel from when I was on the United States National Team, and just felt relief after. It created space for new things..

    What is your occupation and sources of income that doesn't force you to have a professional wardrobe? I've watched some of yr videos and I especially like that your wardrobe fits into one back pack!!! I would like to do that, but how can someone with a job/occupation that requires a lot of clothes do that?

    • @Exploravore
      @Exploravore  7 месяцев назад +3

      That would definitely be a challenge with a “business casual” wardrobe, which is one of the many reasons I avoid those jobs. I have my degree in business marketing, but after 2 months in a corporate office I knew this was absolutely not the path for me. Most of my career I was a performing artist- so wore costumes for a living lol, and then after that I have been a coach and choreographer (so all my clothes shown work for) and worked in restaurant that requires a simple uniform of jeans and a blouse. I am still at this same restaurant working as a bartender- it’s fun, physical, pays well, and gives me freedom 💜

    İ have limited clothes for summer, that are not all hell yes, but I need them because I'm not able to find replacements at the moment that I really love. And I want to essentially overhaul my entire wardrobe (or at least most of it) because a lot of it is old and not my style, I don't love the pieces, and a lot of it I actually really don't like. But I want to do it slowly and with great intention, only bring it pieces that I truly love and will stay in my wardrobe for a long time.... And slowly replace the ones I don't like. I want to get to a point where every item is a "hell yes!" 🤟

    I have an issue with having stocked up on certain things when I got a good deal. Now I have too much of everything. But I feel like I should use it all up which would save me money over the span of several years, but at the same time I feel overwhelmed by the amount of stuff I have. I’ve also been selling my hoard of clothes and shoes for 5 years but still have hundreds of items. Ugh. Any suggestions on how to get past the idea of wanting to use things up and sell things to make some of the money back?

    • @Exploravore
      @Exploravore  6 месяцев назад +5

      To me it’s a sunk cost- you already spent the money. Your time is precious and valuable too- I would rather lose out on some money that was already spent years ago than take precious time trying to sell things. When I want something gone, I donate it immediately. Sure maybe I lost some money, but in turn I’m helping those less fortunate who will gain the items, and I’m keeping my time free to do more important things 🌟

      Most of my videos speak to this in some regard. The first step is to stop accumulation. If you are deep in habits, then this will require deep attention and focus. Start by putting your energies there.

    Hi 🙂 What do you do with your journals when you've completed one? As a writer, what does your sister do with them if she has any?

      So my sister and I are complete opposites- she is a maximalist and keeps all the things 😅 For old journals I always had recycled- with this last one though I burned it in a bonfire in a karmic release ceremony and it felt amazing 😁🔥

    Hi! How u decided to change ur life and be more minimalist?

    • @Exploravore
      @Exploravore  8 месяцев назад +6

      I was a natural minimalist my whole life, then when I got my first job in my twenties I fell into much more consumerism. When I turned 30 something inside me was calling me towards greater authenticity, so I began purging most of what I owned. With everything I let go of, I felt more happy, free and genuine :)

    What do I do with more expensive pieces of clothing? Do I sell or donate? I’m at the point where I just don’t wanna look at it anymore myself because I spent too much money on it and it doesn’t fit right anyway for example a coat puffer coat and I’m only five Foot and it makes me look like the Michelin man.

      Sell it if you have the time and patience for it, or you can find a friend that might like it. The money is a sunk cost regardless, so donating it is still a good option if you want to move more quickly in your declutter process 🩷

    I have a box full of photos and would like to digitize them, but i dont know how to do it. Can you give me some suggestions or maybe even do a video on it on how to digitize photos and put them on dropbox. This is part of my downsizing that I'm doing for myself

    • @Exploravore
      @Exploravore  8 месяцев назад +1

      So I did not have a digital scanner and did not want to buy one. Part of the picture decluttering involved just throwing away a lot that were either duplicates or similar, or just not that interesting, and only keeping the really good ones. For those I just literally took a picture of the picture on my phone and uploaded it to Drop Box from there. The best quality? Definitely not lol but it was the cheapest, simplest and fastest way to do it

      Thanks, I don't have a scanner either so this seems like a good technique. I had also thought about sorting through them and just getting rid of the duplicates like you said and the ones that really don't mean anything and keeping the rest for digitizing. Btw, I have completed 3 days caffeine free and no adverse effects. Thanks for your help

    Food decluttering at the moment. I am never going to make gluten free pizza dough, so it’s going to the food bank.

    What got you into vikings?

    • @Exploravore
      @Exploravore  8 месяцев назад +5

      I just feel a deep connection to Scandinavian/Viking/Old Norse pagan culture- everything about it speaks to my soul. I also grew up in northern Canada, so the beauty of the north is in my blood

      Awe, so are you into the pagan religion as well? @@Exploravore

      @Exploravore  8 месяцев назад +6

      @extrememinimalism I don’t put myself in any box of religion, but I am spiritually pagan in that Nature is my highest authority, and I am an animist, meaning I believe all things of the earth have some kind of soul to them.
