  • Clip from the movie Davy (1958). The Mad Morgans are a family song and dance act touring the British Music Halls. Young Davy (Secombe) is the star of the act, but should he stay with his family or strike out on his own ?

He was a marvellous tenor. Truly Italianate in style. Great power and gorgeous squillo. Should have focused on opera. The best British tenor ever. By a mile.

WOW.! I forgot he did this film, saw it as a child in the sixties and did not realize he did Nessun Dorma and to my amazement as being a Goons fan and having just listen to a show just before I wrote this, he had me in tears. What a good singer he was and maybe if he had chosen not to be known as Neddy Seagoon and a comic he may have gone to become a very famous opera singer, he certainly was good enough. One of the few things I have to admit about this horrible IT Internet world we live which I helped bring in as an IT Teacher/Trainer is that I am able to come across such gems as this, that I had totally forgotten about. PURE MAGIC from the past.

While it's possible it may be due to a playback speed issue during the digitization of this clip, it's worth pointing out that this is a half-step higher than the original key for Nessun Dorma.

He was very good (and brave) to accept that the climax of the aria should be ruined by the drama of the boy and the scenery falling ... just 5 seconds later and we'd have had both the last notes and the drama ... Bad choice from a director not giving his audience the wow moment!!

Secombe was fine, but Pavarotti's arias flowed almost effortlessly. Most tenors seem to work so hard producing the high notes.

Wonderful rendition, tone is incredibly dven throughout his range. His Italian could be a little more expressive. Timbre at the top of the range is especially full and a wonderful ringing tone. Phrasing is spot on and wonderful long phrases. His ability to sustain certain phrases is wonderful. [Professional opera singer with 30 years; ENO, Prague, Vienna, Lucca and Canadian Opera, regular lecturer at the Royal Scottish Conservatoire]. Several colleagues have listened to this and commented that his sustaining ability and long phrases are rare. He's in no hurry to get to his next breath, natural, confident.

      He brought down the house.
This is an extremely acceptable heroic tenor. I have heard less talented tenors have big careers in major opera houses.
To be able to sing the operatic repertoire now and again is one thing. To make a full time career as an opera singer, singing full performances, live, 4 times a week, and not just the arias, but the whole role, acting it, as well… that’s a different story.
Sir Harry had a great, well-placed, even, powerful tenor with a brilliant timbre. And he was a fabulously talented comedian, and he was an inspiring singer of songs of faith. He brought joy and laughter and music to everyone.
      And that’s pretty dang impressive.
