I went all in on this system about 5 years ago and purchased and modified an atari 7800. Great fun system especially having children where I don't have time for lengthy game sessions.
LOVED my CoCo2. Dungeions of Daggorath and Wildcatter were my carts. Then I got the disk and ordered a bunch of obscure games. My VERY fav on the CoCo was The Gates of Delierium, an Ultima ripoff.
Thanks! It really helps when you use your imagination I think. Video games today are SO detailed you just take it for what they give. Not a bad thing, but I like my mind to fill in the blanks sometimes.
Im 50 years old and remember play 2600 in the 80's and ive really been on a Atari kick lately. I really like my modern vcs with all the homebrews on it and coming. Atari is seemingly on a rebound lately qndI hope they are really successful.
Yeah, I got a modded 2600 Telegames six switcher. Use it with a Harmony Cart and a AtariVox. Got the Flashback and Retron 77 as well. Homebrews are great! This is a great video for newbees! Thanks for sharing! Love the channel!
Thanks for the kind words! And you’re exactly right, I made this to spread the word to any newbies out there. I have a feeling most in the demographic just don’t know.
Magnavox odyssey, Atari pong, and all the other pong clones were out years before the VCS, and were things on the screen you could control. And not to mention Fairchild channel F which beat Atari to market by almost a year. Technically VCS wasn't the first to do anything except be a massive success
Oh wow! I have a Tyre Trax video and I think I kept going on about how you NAILED the art. Well done and nice to meat you as well. Thanks for commenting.
We need to squash the myth that playing Atari is "only" about being nostalgic. I think the games offer imagination and simple fun not found with modern gaming and many kids today enjoy the system.
100% I’m on this console more than my others and I honestly enjoy it way more! Some games are nostalgic - but the homebrews keep it so enticing! Less is more 😅
I've been checking these videos on RUclips just to see if I should get the 2600+... mainly because I am 50 and thought it may be fun to give these a try again... then I saw you mention the Retron 77.... forgot all about that device... picked one up today and should get them in a few days. Really looking forward to hooking up some paddles and playing Circus Atari for a bit.
The Hyperkin Retron77 is rad! I love that I can play both ROMs and my cartridges on it. I especially love their Ranger controller. It really helps me play the games better. I've had my 2600 and played it ever since I got it back in the late 70's. The video on it doesn't work as well as it used to but it still works. I love the homebrew games! Im loving the Dungeon games as well as the other ones you mentioned here. I love that the Dungeon games are turn based. Atari Age is a great website with good homebrew games and an active chat room. Yes, these chat rooms still live now that social media has taken over. You can post on there and will get an answer to a question in short order.
Well Atari is releasing the 2600 and I have videos how to download all the games and play - I don’t have mine from a kid either but built my collection back up
I first bought an Atari 2600 back in 1981 when it was still referred to as the Atari VCS (meaning Video Computer System) which it was barely a few integrated circuits that were used to make computers. I later on bought an Atari 5200 Super System in 1982 while I still enjoyed playing my Atari 2600. After the North American Home Video Game Market Crash of 1983/1984 I was just playing my two Atari game consoles and hopeful that someone might come up with new games for either the 2600 or the 5200, when the long awaited Atari 7800 Pro System came out finally. So I bought an Atari 7800 which had a couple new controllers that can be played with as well as compatibility with the Atari 2600 controllers. I have bought some of the Atari Flashbacks during the 2010s as well. I have always liked the Atari video game consoles for they are fun to play.
@@HippoBytes I did read the announcement online and it is more of an Atari 7800 in the casing of an Atari 2600 while having greater compatibility with both game formats and vastly improved sound capabilities. This is why the current Atari is choosing to call it the Atari 2600+ in order to capture the interests of original fans and those who prefer the latest technological advances. If I choose to get it it will be so that I can have an Atari game console that can be easily connected to the more advanced TVs.
@@wallacelang1374 I ordered it. I never had a 7800 so this will be a fun new console to get into. I'd start ordering 7800 homebrews but we aren't sure they'll work on it. 😅
I'm an idiot. Howard Scott, not David. 😅 So a hard part about being dyslexic is being horrible with proper nouns... Maybe I can mute that part out in the RUclips tools 😂
Im not a fan of either Hyperkin or AtGames, so i avoid products from them. My first system was a VCS/2600, i picked up a VCS/2600 and 34 games for $20. I recently bought a 7800 so that I could play both VCS/2600 games and 7800 games and not have to worry about the issues of a cart dumper emulation box.
You got a good deal and I think that logic is solid. I do enjoy the RetroN a lot though because I put the homebrew .bins on it. AtGames is the bottom for me but the latest 50th aniv one the put out has 130 games on it.
@@HippoBytes yeah, I bought a harmony encore years ago, and then recently bought Concerto for the 7800 (and probably a 7800GD because it's far more capable). So I can have pretty much the same capabilities running on an original system which usually has more luck running homebrew (especially if said homebrew uses specialized hardware in the cart).
@@HippoBytes well the 2600+ is essentially a 7800, but with worse compatibility. But they would also need to make new 7800 joystick since I don't think people are wanting to get old n used pain line joystick that probably don't work.

I had Night Driver early on as a kid, had Street Racer also, but when Enduro came out it was pretty cool looking, in the same spirit as N.Driver except a bit more complicated and more detailed graphics that made it bit more "real". Nice! And I feel the same way. I just want a good 15-20 minute game session. And I’m loving the homebrews for that.
I bought a 7800 so i can play 2600 and 7800 game. That coco 2 has some great games, so many memories, loved megabug
I have a 4 switch 2600, and just bought a 7800 so that I could do the same

Atari just announced another new 2600+ console 😂
Yep. The day after I released this video. 🙄
I like the point you made about how 2600 games are like books and better due to your imagination. Good video!

Yeah there is certainly a movement seeming to gain momentum, right!?
@@HippoBytes speaking of I just seen a headline posted 3 hour ago where Atari acquired Atari Age! Wow. So yea id say they are gaining momentum!!
@@dad7275 That's HUGE - WOW! Big move by Atari. Guess they saw games still being sold - they can control the hardware and software again.

Im getting the 50th Gold Atari flashback for this Christmas. Can't wait!

Appreciate that!

I embarrased to say but I have never played the 7800. I had both the 2600 and 5200, then moved on to the TRS-80 Color Computer 2.
Thenk C64.
Flash carts are the way IMO. There are so many great homebrew games and my UNO cart makes it easy to play them on my original hardware.
I get A LOT of use out of my Harmony. It's just so convieient. And I don't even a 30% of all the carts made.

Atari 2600 still alive ? WOW amazing news LOL
Well, maybe not news to you, but for a lot of folks it is.
@HippoBytes : In my younger 2600 days, when a new game was released, I would imagine what it would be like on the system.
Imagination is so underrated 😅
It’s all about Chopper Command here.
I hear yah on the time investment. As impressive as they are. I just don’t have time for modern games.
Chopper Command was jaw dropping for the 2600 - I bet the defender developer wanted to take notes
Atari50 included a brand new SwordQuest game. While it looks like it would play on a 2600, it is actually not compatible with the console.
Did you like SwordQuest? I found that to be one of the more frustrating games to me.
What do you all think - Should I get a Retron 77 or wait for the 2600 Plus?
I’d say RetroN so you don’t have to wait 😅
Your intro is completely wrong ; plus the vcs was not the first home system to use cartridge to change game: this was the real revolution….
I certainly never said its the first system. But certainly WAS the one to reach critical mass. I hope future videos don't strike such a nerve.
