Deep meditation, like we see in Zen, is overlooked as a psycho-therapeutic aid. I have meditated on and off for most of my life and have recently turned a corner that has changed me. It took a lot of work and determination, and many small "understandings" and emotional downturns. I recently read a scientific study of Zen that stated the ultimate goal is the complete opening of the unconscious and its reunification with the conscious mind, creating the "one mind" that is our true nature, and this makes a lot of sense, but I think it is only one aspect of the experience. In any case, psychotherapists need to investigate this further as I believe it could help those willing to make the effort, probably those who have hurt the deepest and the longest.
Transpersonal psychology may very well be a way to find out much more about consciousness and the mind. It may even answer questions about religion as well.

Science is about exploration, curiosity, expedition, and this is a long road in trial and error.
