Mahendraji calls Rafi as his "ustaad" or Guru in music. As a youngster he says he lived close to Rafi's home and often Rafib took him to his recordings. It was also Rafi who referred Mahendraji to his own Guru to learn classical music because Rafi believed that good classical background will always help in film music (at least in those days it was necessary!!). Mahendraji entered film world at a time when Rafi, Talat Mahmood, Manna Da, Kishore da, Mukesh and many other great singers were already well entrenched with their own unique singing styles. Mahendraji was still able to establish himself as a singer with his own unique voice and style. No doubt, Rafi had a great influence on Mahendraji's singing style. Like Rafi, he could sing any type of song - classical, rock n roll, comedy, romantic or sad songs and he sang them with ease and like Rafi one can see the total involvement with which he sang each song. Like Rafi he gives each word in the lyrics the correct expression. The other most important value that he imbibed from Rafi was humility. Mahendraji was humble to the core, totally non controversial, respected all his seniors and was ready to help and promote juniors. Very few in the Indian film industry have this unique combination of being a great singer and also being a great human being.
