If you add a Anatolian Shepherd or a Turkish Kangal to the squad they immediately form their own hierarchy too. The maremmas will protect the flock and let the bigger dogs deal with the threat directly. Incredible instincts these dogs.
Maremmas are a special kind of sheepdog. Unlike border collies/aussie shepherds that control sheep/chickens, Maremmas live amongst them. It a different kind of protection.
The Maremano Abruzzo shepherd dog is used especially in the USA, it is often used MIX with the Great Pyrenees Mountain Dog, or with the Anatolian Shepherd Dog, or with the Akbash (although it is considered that it originates from the Akbash dog). Akbash serves to emphasize even more the aggressive features of LGD, so it is very often used as a MIX with Great Pyrenees.
I needed an urban guard dog that wouldn't harm my birds, so I got a maremma. Turned out to be the friendliest dog on the block :( She is good at running off feral cats and other predators when I have my birds out on the driveway, in cages of course.
They also bond to humans! As long as you have a big place for them to run they will be fine. One unusual condition for them is they are better off in pairs or more like packs of wolves.
I work on a chookfarm. Use to have maremmas. No problem with predators. New owners took over a few years back. No more maremmas. It's cost them a fortune in stock losses from predators which I'm glad about seeing as how they take great pleasure in relating how they "shot all the dogs". 8 years later and they're still screaming about predator control
I’ve a maremma x collie....he is a fantastic pet, loads of big cuddles and as happy being out on the farm roads walking with me as being inside snoozing the day away. Couldn’t get a better dog for the family, he’ll look after EVERYONE . He is my 55kg lap dog.
Nice…I have a purebred Maremma and he is a family dog. They need work to become a companion but when they click that all they have to do is protect the family, he looks happier than most Maremmas we see. Curious of a collie x. I bet he is hella smart.
I've got 2 maremmas and a huge yard. Our neighbours have chickens and they try to protect them thru the fence. Ours are family pets. And so loyal and protective of us. Couldn't asked for a better couple of goofballs. Fantastic with our kids aswell
Maremmas do make excellent pets. So do Great Pyrenees dogs! I have a Pyr, a Pyr Golden Retriever mix and a Pyr Maremma mix. They love just lounging around and sleeping in bed in front of a fan. They’re super happy and healthy!
i have 2 of them and i am getting a third in 3 days can not put how great they are in words. One side not they make great family pets mine are actually very family orientated and we live on accerage with chickens ducks ect
G'day I got a "rescue" Meremma lest year, I live in town and get lots of foot traffic at night. The Meremma discourages people from loitering near our property. lots of people flinch as he jumps at the fence and he wants to chase them if they are running.
I'm swooping into the comment section to find mentions or references to Gold Shaw Farm or the dog Toby. edit: wow, there is none! I guess I'm first of many GSF viewer to be served this video!
Why don't you put up some perimeter fences then put up the chickens at night? You would only need two dogs then and your brewing chickens would lay their eggs in one place not all over the pasture. See Cog Hill Farm on YT. They have 40 acres with ducks, chickens, a emu, and lots more animals and two Maremma dogs work amazingly to protect them all.
Also known as the Cane de Pastore Maremmano-Abruzzese or simply the Maremmano.."maremma is a vast geographical region between Tuscany and Lazio, of approximately 5 000 km² which overlooks the Tyrrhenian Sea "....call it MAREMMANO
I just love how they Don't need training to doing this, it's all DNA, a very ancient DNA.
If you add a Anatolian Shepherd or a Turkish Kangal to the squad they immediately form their own hierarchy too. The maremmas will protect the flock and let the bigger dogs deal with the threat directly. Incredible instincts these dogs.
Toby dog from Gold Shaw Farm brought me here. I wonder if he has a special bark for his ducks, geese and chickens

I love Maremmas because they are like giant versions of Labradors.

I'm surprised at how few likes this video has. It shows exactly what these dogs are capable of, wonderful video!
Awesome! Makes me as a Maremma owner very proud...I know I am protected...while he snores under the table... Thanks, Bear!
I feel the same 🥰

Omg those dogs were determined to remove that noisy drone and get it away from their chickens! So amazing to see them in action!
Could have started with explaining the maremma breed and their history with Italian herders from the very start!

@@Timbo6669 you sound like you have a real good boy there, I know what you mean about them clicking with the family. It’s a really tight bond. 👍

Great video and clarification of how The Maremma Dogs are a typical breed to guard the flock ; and I can’t deny I like the Maremma breed of dogs ! 😍❤️
I have a maremma sheep dog too, we live on a chicken farm in south west nsw and we have ours, little Archie and we will be getting a girl one too.

Hi, I'm just the editor of the story. Sorry I cannot help you with your query.
What are chalks?
How the hell is this some "unique solution"???
Maremmas are used across the world for guarding poultry. Has been that way for centuries.
Ancient instinct
Great video !! Should have a lot more likes
