- The cast of Drag Race Espana has been revealed and we are finally getting the first episode of Drag race Espana! This cast looks amazing!! The first episode of Rupaul's Drag Race Espana started with the queens entering the gorgeous work room. These queens brought looks! This is seriously the types of looks I want for the entrance! Then the queens compete in their first mini challenge! The queens had a photo shoot on a mechanical bull and it was kind of iconic! Carmen Farala won the mini challenge. Then the queens had to pick baskets of rummage and create looks for it! On the runway there was some hits and some misses. The bottom 2 queens were The Macarena and Dovima Nurmi!! The Macarena was the queen to go home first. Do you think the right queen went home??? @@alessandrobenitez188 Um AcTuaLLy (sorry, I'm bored), different countries have different ways of dividing the continents. In Latin America we know America to be a continent subdivided in north, center, and south America, but people in USA consider north America and south America to be two different continents (center America being part of north America), so for them "America" as a continent doesn't exist (I think). Similar to this, some countries have the division of Europe and Asia, some other know them to be one continent named Eurasia. I think this has to do with different definitions of what continents are and how should they be divided. So they aren't technically in the wrong, but I think is more of a different perspectives kinda thing.

When they say Hugaceo is "a hot mess", it's because they say "es un cuadro" which has a double meaning: metaphorically it means "a hot mess", but it literally means "frame" as in a framed picture, so that's why they say it so much.

True. The spanish expression "ir hecha un cuadro" (to walk around 'being' a painting/frame) is a satirical form of figurative language. It's used to mock someone who's outfit/look has way too much going on, or when the look is too kitschy, too extra or even too messy. They translated "voy hecha un cuadro" as "I'm a hot mess", which is kind of a similar meaning in english, but in this translation they lost the play on words with Hugáceo Crujiente's entrance look, because Hugáceo is literally wearing a baroque frame to actually frame their face, and missing a bit the joke on them wanting to actually look like a painting but at the same time making a bit of fun of it.

This is right, except one detail: "cuadro" means painting and not frame. Frame is "marco" in Spanish.
They did their first lip sync CORRECT. It wouldn’t be drag race Spain without a lip sync from Spain’s best female recording artist, Monica Naranjo.

Pupi is a well known drag in Spain, a living legend in Madrid. She appeared on a very popular dating show, ¿Quién quiere casarse con mi hijo? (Who wants to marry my son?) and she's funny AF. She even starred in her own dating show here on RUclips. She may not be the best but she's gonna give us the best confessionals EVER.
Just some quick insight:
In Spain "marica" aka the f slur is commonly used between gay friends and does not have nearly as much of a negative connotation as it does in English
Again, culture and context. We need to listen, to understand other people and other cultures-
even then, maricón even though it literally translates to f*g. it's used mostly like the word Bitch.

The subtitles are not entirely correct the whole time. Hugaceo said they are “travesti” which means transvestite or cross-dresser. They identify as a non-binary person, but they were not saying they were trans. Also, the word “marica or maricón” is commonly used amongst the lgbt+ community in a non negative way the same way someone would say “bitch, hoe” in the English language.
So appreciated you sharing that-- I was surprised how blatantly they missed that-- I mean subtitles are usually bad-- but that was disrespectful and stirring it....
@@fc8240 Yeah, "eh, maricones" is like "hey, queers" or "hey, bitches". In Spanish we reappropriated the term "maricón" in a similar way you did in English with "queer".
I mean I can kinda understand there being mistakes in the subtitles for Drag Race Holland cause it was probably translated by someone who just studied the language rather than someone who natively speaks it but this is Spanish. It’s literally second most spoken language in the US. How are they getting this wrong? Even I spotted it was transvestite rather than transgender and I know less Spanish than a white American toddler watching repeats of Dora the Explorer.

THIS IS HOW YOU CRITIQUE DRAG QUEENS. THE JUDGES were so honest but helpful. You could see that they cared about the queens. Sorry but one episode in and this has made the more recent US drag race and DR down under look like drag race LITE. They need to overhaul production in the RUpaul presented shows asap. This season shows that drag race can still have soul and be entertaining.

It's funny cuz the subtitles say "The sooner the better" when Carmen Farala is choosing her box, but in the original, Supremme actually says "Antes de que reine Leonor", which means "Before Leonor reigns". Leonor is one of the Spanish' monarchy princesses, so there goes a joke that is lost in translation lol
A lot of jokes qet lost in translation. I had to watch again to get some of them right and my first language is Spanish!!!
the next judge is Paca La Piraña, like you both said, she is from Veneno but also (idk if u know) she's was actually Veneno's best friend in real life and she was playin herself at the show (just a little curiosity if you doesn't know hehe)

I hope they get to improve those subtitles, cause it looks like you're missing some funny cursing and bad expressions that are at the core of spanish drag sense of humor.
The Macarena didn't say she wasn't "getting pissed" on the runway when she leaves and fakes that tantrum. She said she wouldn't "shit on the runway cause they're on tv", like out of respect, but she feels like it. Gross and funny.

Just so you know from here on, in Spain (specially in the LGBTQ+ community) we talk REAL LOUD and real dirty and no one really gets offended, it's basically an endearing way of talking to the people close to you, so maybe you'll get shocked at first but it's easy to get used to!

Hey there!! It is a pity, because I know for a fact how difficult is to translate jokes and even more if they have to be fitted as subtitles (wich has an specific number of characters) but you are missing some jokes and specific content.
Here are some Spain's culture hints: (other things are already explained below in other comments)
When Supremme mentions "Tita" on Hugaceo's runway: Tita Cervera is a famous baroness widow of the Baron Thyssen and she is the owner of one of the largest art collections in Spain and also owns the Thyssen Museum, so basically they were saying that Hugaceo was a piece of art, because 'If Tita sees him she would buy him'
The type of shoes that Drag Vulcano is wearing is a very specific thing in the Canary Islands drag scene, all the Drag Queens who participate in the Gala Drag from Gran Canaria always wear these platforms. So as it is a signature piece, Drag Vulcano is probably going to use them in different colours for every single look.
I am also from the Canary Islands, so one of my favs is, of course D. Vulcano. I also like Hugaceo and Killer Queen.

In the U.S. Carmen would have won as they prefer fishy queens. It was nice to see them appreciate the artistry of Hugaceo's look. Although edgy, it was a complete look and perfectly executed. So much talent among this great cast. Each week is going to suck as good queens go home.

That's why we call it Latin America, because they speak Spanish or Portuguese. So in French we call Spain, Italy, France, ... latin countries. Isn't it the same in English?

Curious note: the guest judge for next week “Paca” from Veneno the series played herself in the series she’s not an actress she was a actually the real venenos friend. When I found out I was amazed on how good she was in the series.
I thought so many of the queen's had good moment on the mechanical bull for an amazing shot to be taken and then the final picture was just the least flattering thing ever haha

the "hot mess" thing with hugaceo is because in spanish we say "vaya cuadro" wich means hot mess but "cuadro" also means "painting", so hugaceo is saying she is a painting because she frames her face and at the same time is making a joke saying she looks bad

Hot mess in spanish would be "eres un cuadro" which literally means "you look like a picture/painting" so that's why pupi said to hugaceo crujiente that, what was translated in english as a "hot mess", losing the double meaning of the word.
I'm sad that Macarena went home first, specially knowing that the next challenge is a singing challenge and she is probably one of the best singers in the entire franchise.

As I came a bit late to comment this episode, I'm not sure if someone has already talked about it, but to give you some perspective about one of the judges mentioning Pupi's career: not only hers is the longest one, but she's by far the most well known queen of the cast. I'd say she's more well known than Supremme herself. In fact, when it was known that DR was going to have a Spanish version, Pupi was one of the people speculated to be the host. Also, as far as I know, she's the one that can ring a bell to people outside of the drag scenario due to some of her songs that became pretty well known (also, fun fact: some of the people who know some of her songs, are not aware that Pupi is a drag queen).
So, yeah: competing and doing poorly would be quite a huge risk for her ^^U
It would be interesting to know just how involved Ru & WOW was in the production since, in the AU, Ru is there but here, she dosnt even make a Tv Screen appearance & the overall editing & such is just lighter, better, funnier. It makes me wonder if they bought the rights to the show in some way rather then Ru doing the show if that makes sense?
They told Macarena that Flamenco might be useful for her everyday life because "flamenco" is also the spanish word for "flamingo" and she had one in her outfit :)

Thanks guys for this!!! I am spanish and have to say that Pupi is a Legend here as Vulcano, Carmen and Killer. Everybody know who they are. Pupi's looks are very cheap but her personality is amazing and she is very funny but you know, it is spanish humor and it's dificult to understand if you are not spanish 🤷
It is even sometimes difficult for native spanish speakers not from 🇪🇸.

In Gran Canaria (where Drag Vulcano is from) the drag scene is very different to conventional drag. All the queens start their names with "Drag", always wear those high platforms (so you'll probably see them a lot) and perform is big stages with a team of dancers. Every year there is a BIG drag competition in Gran Canaria, if you search for "Gala Drag Las Palmas" you'll see.

Spain is in Europeee!!! is the country wich colonized Latin America when Great Britain was in U.S and Canada...
