    I was over this bridge last Saturday. Hubby drives, I cover my head with a blanket and pray. Yes, it is that scary! The west bound side of the bridge has this flimsy looking guardrail at appears to be about three feet high. Also, there is no shoulder so if anything happens (accident, weather, etc,) you are stuck there.

    As a teen, I used to drive this bridge without any problems. Three years ago I drove over it again after years of not driving it. I was 39 and let me tell you....Anxiety attack right there on that bridge crossing it. Tunnel vision, labored breathing, heart racing. Worst feeling in the world knowing you feel so vulnerable and knowing the potential dangers. When you're a kid, you don't think about those things. As an adult, you tend to become more of risks, dangers, and how fragile life is. It was a very scary feeling knowing you are up so high, and the no shoulder with the water straight down. I drive over the Delaware Bridge no problem. But this bridge which I have to drive again this weekend, scares the crap out of me. I'm coughing up the $25 to have someone else drive it for me.

    I never knew people had such issues with this bridge. I used to drive over the bridge for my friend who was terrified of it but I just thought she was afraid of bridges in general.I only got a little apprehensive when I;d invariably get caught between two tractor trailers or even on one side of a tractor trailer on the bridge but it was over so quickly I just never thought it caused people so much panic. The Solomon Island bridge though... that one can get your palms sweating. Especially in the rain.

    • @gingerc4001
      @gingerc4001 5 лет назад

      The Solomns Island bridge use to be a breeze to go over. It was a lot lower back in the day. When they rebuilt the bridge, they raised it way up so the ships can get in and out of Pax River Naval Base. The 301 Bridge going to and from MD & VA., I dislike that bridge, too.

Thats when I have to whip out the YT videos of it or pictures of that crazed bridge and be like... yah THIS I'm afraid of. The bay bridge while large just doesnt feel as high or as just intimidating as a bridge with a very low guardrail and a steep bank. I think most of the fear & panic comes from the fact that the side rails are too low. It's really easy for the car to flip over & fall down, just one mistake & you end up dead. If they made the rails a bit high & solid I don't think so people would be panicking. Most people are not afraid of the bridge itself but the height & with small railings like that you can see straight down & your head starts spinning. These are small details they should keep in mind while making a bridge.

    Back in the 1970 and 1980 when this nightmare was only two lane. Nothing like a full out semi blowing by you as you scrape paint on the tiny rails. And it was real fun in the winter

    The only panic attack I have ever had in my life on this thing, 15 years ago! Had no idea what was happening. Apparently your sub conscious mind thinks your in danger since it looks at some points like your driving into water. So they told me. Going this week...think I will get an escort.....

      I feel the same way..lol. .I never crossed this bridge but I went over the skyline bridge in Florida. .I kept thinking any minute I was either gonna have a blow out and push me over the side or somebody would get beside me like a big rig and force his way in my lane and push me off..strange I know lol

      That's great news for you Victor but for some reason my fear of bridges hasn't gone away...I was down in Louisiana and some so called friend of mine who KNEW I was really scared of bridges told me he was gonna lock my door and go across the lake pontchartrain bridge so when he stopped for gas so he could make it across the bridge I got out and caught me a cab home...MY ASS he wasn't gonna get me across that damn bridge...I think he should have noticed my initials I use on here...Mr T....that was a hint right there...he should have knocked me out in order for THAT to happen...lmao

    I think I would be perfectly fine driving this bridge, but I would drive slow with extreme caution in the middle lane. What would scare me the most is driving next to someone experiencing anxiety.

      I've driven over this bridge in a truck and scariest part is or was that in 97 only had jersey barriers and from the truck it didn't look like there was anything between the roadway and going over the side.

  • @vanessagras

    And what you can't see in the video...or can't tell unless you're really looking...is that the "road" (esp at the top) is grated and completely see-through...you can see straight to the ocean from the top of the freaking bridge...there is no solid road under you......i almost fainted.
    I won't even drive to ocean city anymore just because of this bridge #Nope

    One of the comments below is this video does not do it justice. The comment is correct. Driving over this bridge is intimidating for most and down-right frightening for others. Because of this fear, MD has in place a guard station at both ends of the bridge for those who can't drive across so the person can stop at the station and someone there will drive their car across the bridge for them. If you do drive across, the key is doing what the driver in this video has done - drive in the middle lane or the far right lane. Do NOT drive in the far left lane if you think you will freak out because if you do drive in that lane, look out your driver window and you can see straight down to the water. There isn't a should on the left, just the yellow lane line and railing. I found out the hard way. Never gripped my steering so hard in my life. Scary as hell.

      You have to drive it to believe it. Drove it for years from PA to Annapolis MD to sail. The video does not do it justice. I drove the Chesapeake Bay Bridge Tunnel, and that was a cakewalk compared to this. I'm a driving/car enthusiast, but this bridge gave me my first panic attack.

    • @augustreil
      @augustreil 6 лет назад +2

      Susan B, some people just have a phobia about driving across bridges like this one, they can't explain why, it just scares the hell out of them and they cannot get over it. Sucks, but it is what it is.
