Was re-listening to ‘There Is Nothing Wrong With Love’ yesterday and had the thought that the vocal melody and phrasing of the “Car” verses were very Elliott Smith-esque. And now I find this. Awesome.
What an amazing little musical time capsule to discover in 2020. Crazy to think of all the raw talent coming out of the PNW around the time this was recorded.
I love this. Not only because Elliot Smith and BtS make everything shiney for me...but I love the honest natural strain of his voice here. This makes me happy inside.:D
So so many years later. Yeah, I just sputtered at my screen. Fucking hell thanks for posting this. This one of my Built To Spill ~~songs~~ I wanna hug you.
As a die hard Built To Spill fan, it's an incredible feeling seeing someone else from the PNW cover the band, like Elliot Smith. You can say it sounds like shit, you can say that it sounds like some 14 year old boy in his bedroom recording his first video for RUclips. The reality of the situation is that we don't know when Elliot Smith played this song. It could have been played from the end of '94 anywhere to 03' when Elliot passed away. The instrumentation suggests that it is early in Elliots life of a recording artist, maybe even Heatmiser. Being a fan of both artists heavily, I love listening to this version for all of the little intricacies that it offers from Elliots perspective.
Have any of you people complaning about his singing once considered that he might not have had a moniter to hear his self at this particular show. I've tried singing without a moniter and it's damn near impossible. I thought he sounded good considering that's probably true.
Good songwriters write to their own strengths, and Elliott has different strengths than Doug M. from BTS. Still, it's a great song, and it's fun to hear E.S. take a shot at it.
the truth is that elliott was....I have a great deal to say on that matter, but, we have to leave and follow. Music is an unbelievable force. Those that tell you opposite are selling you something.
@athomestudios you don't even know what really happened to him.. it's humanly IMPOSSIBLE to stab yourself in the heart, pull the knife back out and do it again. i doubt he killed himself. but if he did, he'd probably be the only person ever capable of stabbing himself in the heart more than once. if he really did that ..kudos to him i guess for being that extreme, but, it's unlikely. i feel that ppl assumed it was suicide cos of how sensitive he was and how sad he seemed. i believed it too..
Well we'll just have to ask da myth buster, maybe they'll do it on the next season cause it's getting kinda old lol and I had I friend RIP who hung him self with a belt in the closet and that sounds just as hard to do with no noose
This isn't Elliot Smith is it? Well at least the beginning part didn't sound like it, until the baseline clicked it. Hastag add compression verses remember drummer.
FOR REAL! the intro is really shaky, elliot smith sounds soooooo much better, this sounds like some youtuber in his home studio trying to sound that him. It does get better in the middle though. too bad he can't re-record it, suicide is never the answer.
yeah that's because it is crap. if you changed the title and put video of a guy in his bedroom playing this to his webcam it would be getting trashed. Bad cover
i cannot believe this exists. amazing.
Elliott Smith & Built to Spill? My head just exploded.
godamn snare.
Thats not a snare.
it is
This is my favorite Built to Spill song. Makes me so happy to know Elliott chose to cover it:)
one of the best songs ever, covered by one the greatest.
Perfect.

He was prob inspired by Doug Martsch! Crazy
Elliott smiths voice is absolutely perfect for this song.
Okay... I didn't know this existed. My two worlds colliding! Wow! 🤯
What an amazing little musical time capsule to discover in 2020. Crazy to think of all the raw talent coming out of the PNW around the time this was recorded.
feels good to know my favorite built to spill song may have been elliott's. incredible
I love this. Not only because Elliot Smith and BtS make everything shiney for me...but I love the honest natural strain of his voice here. This makes me happy inside.:D
This is so amazing.
I adore elliott smith, and built to spill is an incredible band.

***** yes! I love built to spill...I love Elliot Smith covering them more. Enjoy!
Where is that??
Stephanie Lintel I have the show that this is from. It's at Detroit Bar in Costa Mesa, CA on April 1, 2003.
@YukonGoldenBoy sir, you've just made my day.
💕
I always thought what this would sound like.
❤❤
oh my fucking god
OMG
@athomestudios damn i did not expect you to throw that suicide reference in there at the end
10/10
hoooooly shit this is gold
🥰
Doug covered Antonio Carlos Jobim by Heatmise so I assume this is just Elliott returning the favor. Or vice versa i dunno
heartbreaking
Wow
seriously
u know my dude!!!!

@athomestudios The police didn't declare it to be a suicide. The evidence was inconclusive and his girlfriend at the time acted very strange.
i think the drums sounds cool just saying
Is it physically possible to clean that snare up via software...not that I know how haha, but is it possible
Just a bit.
i just came
Good songwriters write to their own strengths, and Elliott has different strengths than Doug M. from BTS. Still, it's a great song, and it's fun to hear E.S. take a shot at it.
you can hear the snare rattlin'
someone shut the goddam snare off haha. 2 of my favs; BTS and elliott
Of course. Why have I never seen this?
It's mainly because of the audio quality.
@wolfblass88
there is a thing you can use to rip it off of here.
the truth is that elliott was....I have a great deal to say on that matter, but, we have to leave and follow. Music is an unbelievable force. Those that tell you opposite are selling you something.
dug doug

I love built to spill but I think Elliot Smith’s vocals for this song sounds better than the original where Doug Martsch is singing.
lolz
theres a difference between a bad recording and not doing it right....getbiggerP and sdrink need a relisten
yeah this is pretty bad, but i do understand that the audio blows
This isn't Elliot Smith is it? Well at least the beginning part didn't sound like it, until the baseline clicked it. Hastag add compression verses remember drummer.
Yes, it is.
There should be at least one other existing version of this BTS cover..... If only I could put my finger on it.... 🤔
true although the quality is shit still elliott was more of a studio artist than a performer he got nervous alot when he played live
It's funny how this song's not as standard.
and will someone teach this drummer how to turn off his snares during the quiet parts, fuck
@jasonkise
Yes it is.
Elliott gave some awful performances during the worst of his alcoholism/drug addictions. This was probably one of them,
Take the snare down! Ffs
The style in which you seem to regard music diminishes your credibility as a listener
That doesn't sound like Elliot. Can someone verify that is really him?
Yes, it was really him.
You can tell by the slightly stuffed up sound. I personally think he may have had a deviated septum.
@athomestudios caca
@wolfblass88
disagree sounds like crap
He just doesn't sound that good. Elliot always had the sweetest voice, and this one seems strained. I'll take your word for it I guess.
You have to listen to more bootleg live recordings.
Not the great mans best cover. Hope built to spill fans don't judge him just on this. It would have sounded better live too.
I don't think his voice suits the song.
borisovicinovski lmfao all due respect to BTS but Doug ain’t exactly Pavarotti
FOR REAL! the intro is really shaky, elliot smith sounds soooooo much better, this sounds like some youtuber in his home studio trying to sound that him. It does get better in the middle though. too bad he can't re-record it, suicide is never the answer.
FAKER!
THIS IS NOT ELLIOTT SMITH. FAKE FAKE FAKE FAKE FAKE
Yeah it is.
yeah that's because it is crap. if you changed the title and put video of a guy in his bedroom playing this to his webcam it would be getting trashed. Bad cover
nice try, but as much as I'd like to believe it. That's not Elliott Smith.
