Really awesome to see Elliott Smith cover my favorite Bob Dylan song. My father loved this song and would always laugh at the lyrics and so I always loved this song growing up.
ok i love the end of this video where the guy asks if it's ok to take their picture and one dude is like "NO" also, elliott is fantastic and i love him a lot
Bob Dylan was the jester Elliotts the Tragic lover type. Totally different archetypes. Bob spent half an hour tuning his guitar to piss his crowd off when they were already mad. He becomes different identity’s and is impossible to pin down. Both voices are unique and carry a special timbre. This is an imitation which professional’s do on Bob songs instead of making it their own. It’s like an inside joke anyone can get in one.
..every cover of his, all of them perfect .... everything he ever did. his music and spirit soothe my soul. i wish i could have done that for him as silly as it may seem
The problem with covering Dylan songs is trying to remember all the lyrics. I mess this one up almost every time. And "It's Alright, Ma" is damn impossible to remember word-for-word lol.
@beatlefreak777 This song is no easy task to learn and execute. Like many Dylan songs, there are a lot of words and its ALL about the words. Smith plays the parts incredibly well considering he probably just did this almost as a joke. Every band gets sick of their own songs eventually. The fact that Smith could offer his band this song and NAIL it is incredible to me.
The vocals don't really sound that different from Dylan's to me. I mean, usually Elliott sounds very different from Dylan, but here not so much. I wounder if he's trying to sound that way here.
Holy shit this is awesome. One of my favorite musicians covering another of my favorite musicians. This is like just a step below Elliott covering Radiohead for me. Who would have thought that he could pull off such a passable impression of Dylan's singing voice?
@WINFIELD32750 This is not an official release. Quite hard to get. The live album is called "Live at 400 Club 10/11/1998". There are 19 tracks. You can see it on RateYourMusic.
Ya, I knew what he was saying. I was just responding to Kc jones because it didn't sound like he knew that "All along the Watchtower" was a cover. A lot of people think it is an original since Jimi's version was so popular, so it is an easy mistake.
50/50. Hendrix definitely 'made' AaTW but there is no greater Balland of thin man than Dylan's, well in my opinion. This cover is magnificent but just listen to the studio recording from Dylan, so much power and depth.
You walk in the room with your pencil in your hand You see somebody naked and you say, "Who is that man?" You try so hard but you just don't understand What you're gonna say when you get home 'Cause something is happening here but you don't know what it is Do you, Mr. Jones? You raise up your head and you ask, "Is this where it is?" And somebody points to you and says, "It's his" And you say, "What's mine?" and somebody else says, "Well, what is?" And you say, "Oh my God, am I here all alone?" But something is happening, but you don't know what it is Do you, Mr. Jones? You hand in your ticket and you go watch the geek Who immediately walks up to you when he hears you speak And says, "How does it feel to be such a freak?" And you say, "Impossible!" as he hands you a bone And something is happening but you don't know what it is Do you, Mr. Jones? You have many contacts among the lumberjacks To get you facts when someone attacks your imagination But nobody has any respect, anyway they already expect you to all give a check To tax-deductible charity organizations Ah, you've been with the professors and they've all liked your looks With great lawyers you have discussed lepers and crooks You've been through all of F. Scott Fitzgerald's books You're very well-read, it's well-known But something is happening and you don't know what it is Do you, Mr. Jones? Well, the sword swallower walks up to you and then he kneels He crosses himself and then he clicks his high heels And without further notice, he asks you how it feels And he says, "Here is your throat back, thanks for the loan" And you know something is happening but you don't know what it is Do you, Mr. Jones? Now, you see this one-eyed midget shouting the word "Now" And you say, "For what reason?" and he says, "How" And you say, "What does this mean?" and he screams back, "You're a cow! Give me some milk or else go home" And you know something's happening but you don't know what it is Do you, Mr. Jones? Well, you walk into the room like a camel, and then you frown You put your eyes in your pocket and your nose on the ground There ought to be a law against you comin' around You should be made to wear earphones 'Cause something is happening and you don't know what it is Do you, Mr. Jones?
Ha ha. Well, if you can find something to "make fun of" let met know. This song exemplifies the central dynamic in our dead western culture (soon to vanish no doubt, too bad because there are some positive elements) Let's ;just give the man a hand. He had the guts to "pentrate" i.e. the "forest for the trees."
I was listening to Nick Drake, went to google and searched for singer song writer like Nick opened the world of Elliott.
Kurt Cobain enjoy
Me in reverse, Judee Sill came after that.
@@TheTheodelove judee
He gets that whole "Bob Dylan is stooooned" sound into his voice
This cover is how I discovered the genius that is Elliott Smith.
That’s so weird lol
Wow this is just perfect. Nobody could have covered this song better
Stephen Malkmus' version is amazing too: ruclips.net/video/3CVKmf3SEfk/видео.html
Can't believe I haven't heard this before now! Two of my favorite song writers at once!
funny....same with me
@@vincenthamilton2828 well, it looks like there are more than two of us
Make it 4
Wow I wasn't so sure it would be a good cover, blew my fucking mind. Should never doubt Elliot's skill and artist ability .
Nobody quiet reaches Dylans scorn in this one, but Elliot comes close.
My favorite artist covering my favorite Dylan song. Now if Radiohead would cover Elliott Smith.
LISTEN VERSION KULA SHAKER, IS THE BEST!
7 years later I'm still hoping for a cover by radiohead :(
Really awesome to see Elliott Smith cover my favorite Bob Dylan song. My father loved this song and would always laugh at the lyrics and so I always loved this song growing up.
ok i love the end of this video where the guy asks if it's ok to take their picture and one dude is like "NO"
also, elliott is fantastic and i love him a lot
Probably my favorite Elliott cover, he just does it so well....
the talking in the background combined with my noise canceling earbuds makes for a slightly neurotic listening experience
All that is left is for Bob to cover Elliott. Unlikely, but a fella can dream can't he.
I mean, he flat out plays Bob's voice better than Bob could.

Magical and beautiful.
Such a great soul with so much. Grateful for his time here and why he did with it. Thank you Elliot.
bob dylan and elliott smith are very much alike personality wise and musicaly. love them both
..every cover of his, all of them perfect .... everything he ever did. his music and spirit soothe my soul. i wish i could have done that for him as silly as it may seem

He puts across the Halloween aspect of this song very well.
I really love this!
The problem with covering Dylan songs is trying to remember all the lyrics. I mess this one up almost every time. And "It's Alright, Ma" is damn impossible to remember word-for-word lol.
As Patti Smith proved, it happens to the best when trying to memorize Dylan.
the funny thing to me if that none of us need to be here past oh 77 to cover or hear anything its complete garbage
@@claymationwaves wanna get what you mean, do you mean everything past 77 is garbage? just curious cause I'm currently learning this song
Zimmy knew it, too..... (from "A Hard Rain"):
~~~"And I'll know my song well, before I start singing..." ~~~
It's alright Ma? It's in my DNA. It's life and life only.
this song is so groovy, love it
this makes my heart super happy!
man, this is great.
Nobody told me this song had so many lyrics!
Im used to the kula shaker version, which is so kewl musically.
"Oh my God. Am I here all alone?"
Love these.
Haha i just kinda ranomly typed in "elliott smith ballad of a thin man" hoping for a result because I love the original so much. Thanks for this :)
fucking brilliant, and the crowd reaction makes it even better
Great version, sounds so much like Dylan.
The vocals don't really sound that different from Dylan's to me. I mean, usually Elliott sounds very different from Dylan, but here not so much. I wounder if he's trying to sound that way here.
Dylan's voice is so distinctive. It's easy to imitate.
I think I get what you mean; both are very "untrained," but distinct. It's like a "fuck-all" to tonality, but not to melody, in a weird way.
It's hard to do a Dylan cover and not sound like him
He also did "when I paint my masterpiece" and a few others I think.
@MercuryClock Wow you took the words out of my mouth!! Elliott covering Radiohead would be purely magical!
brilliant. Thanks for posting this.
You know something's happening
But you don't know what it is
Do you, Mister Jones
Holy shit this is awesome. One of my favorite musicians covering another of my favorite musicians. This is like just a step below Elliott covering Radiohead for me. Who would have thought that he could pull off such a passable impression of Dylan's singing voice?
And he also did Black Jack Davey at a very sorrowful show. I love when he does Dylan. It makes them both that much more awesome.
I want to see those photos
Im in love with a dead man!
For reals. Have u heard that song I fell in love with a dead boy?
I missed the opportunity to hang out wt elliott a second time he got a gf and just dissappeared
goosebumps!!!
What it's like being on RUclips but not Facebook when something kicks off.
Like Shakespeare, Elliott is not of an age, but for all time.
Ahhhh!This is soooo fu'''''g cool!
1998-10-11
Legend.
Torn between greats, yet again.
I'm a huge Bob Dylan fan but after hearing this I feel like it is just as much Elliots
Thanks.
I love this song even more than the original.
I think the title is "Ballad of a Thin Man" though, but whatever. Thanks for sharing!
Perfect :)
I covered it a posted all the chords if you want to figure it out and play it. Elliots is the best cover imo
Thanks for this.
Elliott Smith - Ballad of a Thin Man - Bob Dylan cover
Muito bom!!!!! O cara mandava muito bem !!!
Okay Pennywise, sorry, I didn't realize I was in your presence.
Is he parodying Dylans voice? Still awesome.
@TheJeremiahWebb I can't believe people would uprate wishing someone would die...
Interesting cover..RIP
@concreatcreativity that is not even possible to............................. elliott smith cannot be compared TO ANYONE EVER
@GregWLocke I agree with you totally but if I saw him live I'd probably do the same
Hendrix made "All along the Watchtower", Elliot made this song.
+Epiphoniak but this is a cover?
+Ben Ferrell ?
"All along the Watchtower" was also a Dylan cover.
