Topper is on amazing form here. He has so many ideas and they all work and they all fit the song, he's doing a ton of stuff but not overplaying. Also he's nailing the volume perfectly, so many people just hit everything as hard as they can even when in a small place and dont seem to care that all anyone can actually hear now are cymbals.
Thank you guys for what you gave that confused and frightened 12 year old boy back in 77, i'll never forget the exhileration as Janie Jones entered my ears and changed my life.
always loved his drumming style...topper could nail it all down...funk, jazz, rock, reggae...perfect timing and chops up the wazoo...very influencial to me as a drummer...as well as many others out there...good to see him having a jam w/mick jones.
I was there front row, you can just about see me, but you can definitley hear me. Im the one who shouts TOPPER TOPPER YEAH TRAIN IN VAIN... What a great night and I love the fact that you got don letts in this and Johnny green.
Oh yeah!!!!!!! The Return of "The Human Drum Machine" Scott Kenemore, an American writer and drummers, wrote about Topper that "his contribution to the music was tremendous, and his drumming remains an undiscovered treasure for too many" (but not for us) and "his drumming on "Train in Vain" (this song) has been characterized as one of the most important and distinctive beats in rock music". I must agree! Welcome back, Topper!
Topper made the Clash with his tight insaine drumming technique. Just listening to him on this video with your eyes closed and you'd know it is him. No other drummer could of replaced him.
If Joe Strummer hadn't died of a heart attack, the Clash were going to reunite at the Rock and Roll Hall of fame with Topper but without Paul, who refused to join them. Believe it or not, they were considering getting a replacement bassist for that event. @mcdstuff Well, that's sort of my original point. You and I both know Topper was awesome. In the world of rock back then few people paid much attention to his incredible skills. It was all about the band and their political views etc. In the press he was rarely acknowledged as the great drummer he was/is. I wish he wasn't afraid of flying because he might be touring with Gorillaz right now!
It’s because he had a bad case of pneumonia in the late 80’s and his vocal cords got damaged. Sad! He can still sing just has less range. Glad it didn’t stop him from singing though. He’s a legend.
@luvlife23 HEAVEN CAN COME CLOSE 2 REALITY IF YOU VISIT THE INN ON THE GREEN - PORTOBELLO ROAD LONDON ON A CARBON CASINO NIGHT - TRUST ME - I,VE BEEN 3 TIMES.
It’s because he got really sick in the 80’s and almost died of pneumonia. His vocal cords got damaged. I give him credit for still singing anyway and not letting it stop him.
I'm guessing by the use of the word 'jackass' you are a Yankee. Enough said. Its a really poor rendition vocally of the original. i'm sure it would have been fun to be there and hes a charming guy. I just find it sad and wish I hadn't seen the vid. I saw him sing these from the front row in 1982..i prefer to hold on to those memories, rather than hear fading versions.
He got really sick in the late 80’s with pneumonia and his vocal cords got damaged. It has nothing to do with his age. It’s great that he still sang after that anyway and didn’t let it stop him from performing which he clearly loves.
Whats this the "graveyard" version I'd rather see Mick try for the original and miss ocassionally than rewrite the whole melody to only cover three notes . Woeful , pisspoor rendition..time to collect the old age pension.
Mick’s vocal range has been limited since he got sick in the 80’s and his vocal cords got damaged. It has nothing to do with his age. Stop being a judgmental jerk.
I was there front row, you can just about see me, but you can definitley hear me. Im the one who shouts TOPPER TOPPER YEAH TRAIN IN VAIN... What a great night and I love the fact that you got don letts in this and Johnny green.

People just don't realize who Topper Headon is and how important he was to Rock n Roll not to mention The Clash.
Topper plays effortlessly flawless, an amazing drummer!
always loved his drumming style...topper could nail it all down...funk, jazz, rock, reggae...perfect timing and chops up the wazoo...very influencial to me as a drummer...as well as many others out there...good to see him having a jam w/mick jones.
Holy Topper. Talk about solid drumming. Damn.
Amazing! I think this is the closest we'll get to a Clash reunion. If Paul joined them, it would be orgasmic!!!
great to see topper.
he is the best drummer i have ever heard
Very distinctive drummer, right up there with Bonham. Topper's one of my favorites of all time.
Such a good drummer. Highly underrated but was the backbone of the tight Clash sound. Always loved all of Toppers chops
I like mick singing this on that lower register. It suits the song better in my opinion
That's cool. Glad to see Topper again.
Nice to see Topper back and its good to see that he's overcome his addictions once and for all.
This video has made my day......I can't believe I did not know this happened
Superb drumming by Nicky Headon!
Without doubt they would not have been as solid Without him. He contributed much more than just the beat and rhythm. He's the best.
a world where the Clash still existed would be like heaven for me
Same

Such a snappy, clean drummer. No useless fills.
Oh yeah!!!!!!!

Topper the human drum machine

Topper made the Clash with his tight insaine drumming technique. Just listening to him on this video with your eyes closed and you'd know it is him. No other drummer could of replaced him.

Fucking Topper, top class lad. Sweet guy who battled his demons but glad to see him healthy and well.
Mick got very sick in the late 80's and hasn't been able to sing since. Go easy on him.

Age has not slowed tops down
Keith Moon was Toppers idol Bernie.Good call
yeah, well anyone who ever played drums wanted to be Keith Moon. And he was actually off time some times, but he was musical that no one cared
@mcdstuff Well, that's sort of my original point. You and I both know Topper was awesome. In the world of rock back then few people paid much attention to his incredible skills. HELL YEAH! topper headon!!!!!!!!!
Just listen to him play! fuck!!
Thanks for the video. This is awesome. It seems Mick cannot sing quite as well anymore though, or maybe he was just losing his voice?
It’s because he had a bad case of pneumonia in the late 80’s and his vocal cords got damaged. Sad! He can still sing just has less range. Glad it didn’t stop him from singing though. He’s a legend.

yeah didnt u know he nearly died?
He definitely couldn't hit any high notes anymore. Inevitable yet sad.
It’s because he got really sick in the 80’s and almost died of pneumonia. His vocal cords got damaged. I give him credit for still singing anyway and not letting it stop him.
@@violetsky5202 Still sounds good, just lost some top end. Happens to most singers as they age. Thanks for setting the record straight!
Topper is a machine gun really, not a drummer.
I'm guessing by the use of the word 'jackass' you are a Yankee. Enough said.
