Hans von Trotha était un chevalier qui obtint de nombreux faits d'armes au compte des nobles du Palatinat Rhénan aux alentours de 1480. Cependant, il s'est longtemps disputé avec l'abbé de l'abbaye de Wissembourg aux sujet des dépendances des terres que Trotha avait gagné auprès du Palatinat. Il a notamment provoqué une immense inondation dans Wissembourg après avoir un construit un barrage en amont de la ville - retenant l'eau - puis en le détruisant. Trotha fut plus tard excommunié par le pape Borgia qu'il accusait d'immoralité; ses protecteurs du Palatinat se retirèrent par la même occasion. Trotha meurt de vieillesse en 1503.
Il est aujourd'hui connu en Alsace sous le nom de "Hans Trapp", qui est une déformation de son nom. Il est l'équivalent du père fouettard et est associé à Saint-Nicolas durant les jours de fête. Trotha était considéré comme un individu méchant par les populations des alentours et les parents - pour garder un œil sur leurs enfants - racontaient à ces derniers que s'ils n'étaient pas sages, Hans von Trotha viendrait les punir.
Ce poème symphonique explore - au travers de différents thèmes - l'univers médiéval rhénan de Trotha, de ses faits d'armes à son ban, en passant par ses gloires.

Hans von Trotha was a knight who obtained many deeds of arms for the nobles of the Palatinate Rhineland around 1480. However, he had long quarreled with the abbot of Wissembourg Abbey over the dependencies of the lands that Trotha had gained from the Palatinate. He caused a huge flood in Wissembourg after having built a dam upstream of the city - holding water - and then destroying it. Trotha was later excommunicated by Pope Borgia, whom he accused of immorality; his protectors in the Palatinate withdrew at the same time. Trotha died of old age in 1503.
He is known in Alsace (region in France sharing its border with Germany) as "Hans Trapp", which is a distortion of his name. He is the equivalent of the Black Peter and is associated with Saint-Nicolas. Trotha was considered a bad individual by the surrounding populations. Parents - to keep an eye on their children - told them that if they were not wise, Hans von Trotha would come and punish them.
This symphonic poem explores - through different themes - the medieval world of Trotha, from his deeds of arms to his ban, passing by his glories.
