Greetings from Germany. My old blue Lamy safary from my school times is still in business. And with me in the office. I'm collecting fountain pens since 10 years, but my safary is still the allrounder in my life.
I love the 2000. I just don't have one right now. Also, I have a little trouble finding the nib sometimes. This happens with all hooded nibs with me, even with the Parker 51. Is this an issue for you? Thanks!
@@HemingwayJones hooded nibs don’t usually give me trouble…though I had my 2000 tuned to more of a Japanese EF. Later, the barrel broke and I still need to send it off to get fixed. Have been dragging my feet on getting it fixed: my nib preference these days is M (and wanting to experiment with B, stub, etc.). Love the ink capacity and was a great everyday pen when I used it!
I am a huge fan of classic Sheaffer pens. That Legacy makes my heart go pitter patter. Great choice of fountain pens today. Thanks for sharing your thoughts for each pen in different situations.
Nice summary, I also work in the financial industry at the frontier between science, business, and risk. Not so much with clients and now seldomly physically in office. For work I use a bunch of kaweco sports (brass, steel, aluminium, and one art) mostly color coordinated. My workhorse is the brass version with kon peki. For projects writing I have a few gravitas pocket pens also color coordinated but in a less vivid palette. The kaweco have fine nib, the brass with a gold nib from a spanish nib firm, super smooth, and the gravitas are equipped with semi flex nibs. So my set is rather utilitarian and definitely much less elegant than yours, but I appreciate your taste and the thoughts you bring to what pen for which purpose! Cheers, Chris
Hello Chris, I love your choices and especially that Brass Kaweco, which is one of my favorites. I have it with a medium nib and a 1.1 Stub (their calligraphy nib). It is a great pen for all occasions. How do you find the Gravitas flex pen? It looks very nice indeed. Thank you for the kind words and all the best.
@@HemingwayJones I love the gravitas pens, I haven’t purchased (yet) one of their flex but I installed jowo compatible flex nib (from India if I remember well). I like these flex and they have a reasonable flow given that the pocket only take small int’l cartridges so it doesn’t dry up the cartridge in a single paragraph :)
NEW SUBSCRIBER! I’m so glad that your channel showed up on my feed. I love journals ,stationary and pens. I still write snail mail. I still enjoy writing in my journal by lamp light and smoke a bowl of my favorite aromatic. Sometimes even with a nitecap. Blessings 🙏🏼
I need to get myself a Pilot Custom 823 one of these days... Maybe after my next really big closing :) My essential fountain pens for business include the E95s for signing contracts, TWSBI Vac 700 (with the 1.1 stub) for thank you and Christmas card to clients/agents, but then I use my Platinum Plaisir in the field for showings as my work horse pen because it is cheap AND very durable, and lastly, I use my Pilot Vanishing Point during my Tuesday business meetings because of how easy it is to "cap" and "uncap" while taking notes.
You sound like me, I buy pens after closings! E95S just joined my fleet. I like that pen. Vac with a stub sounds amazing. All great choices including the VP!
I work at a hospital in Radiology, I just use my Lamy Safari, gray, extra fine. I pair it with some cheap Seikos to not draw too much attention, It’s a perfect nib for small writings on patients charts, forms and log books. It’s a work horse of a writing instrument. my MontBlancs I use at home or at dinner restaurants to sign the tab and match them with my luxury time pieces.
That’s a great choice. I’ve hear of people using Lamy Safari because they are easy to clean and sterilize. Have you ever had to sanitize a pen? Which Seiko, by the way.
I have a technical role in industrial automation, my daily use pen is a Pelikan M815 Metal Striped - my enjoyment of the writing experience encourages me to keep detailed notes, which has been invaluable at times. On site, I might substitute something less valuable, like a Hongdian N7, just so I don't have to worry too much in harsher environments. I'm tempted by the style of the Waterman Carène, I must say.
I love bringing my Twisbi Eco to work, because it gets a lot of people going "is that a fountain pen?" Then I get to talk about pens until they regret their question.
"Until they regret their question," made me chortle. I would not regret asking anyone about a writing implement...especially one they were passionate in illuminating me on. But, that was funny!
What a great/imaginative choice of topics! Thanks again, Hemingway. As a retired casualty defense trial lawyer, I "get" your selections. Being comfortably retired I feel "freer" to think more creatively now. Hence, it seems to me that if one's office isn't too stuffy, it would be fun to match pens to occasions and/or locations. For example, on the upcoming 4th of July, I might sport my Conklin limited edition, red, white and blue Freedom pen. Around Mardi Gras here in the New Orleans area, I suspect a Narwhal Traveler with Mardi Gras colors would fit right in even the most staid outfits. And if it didn't, the heck with them! On President's Day, I wouldn't hesitate to bring my Retro 51 Lincoln. For "stealth" everyday use, a pen with just a bit of flair but not so much as to draw unwanted attention: the Diplomat Traveler with the "torched" finish. I could go on, I suppose, but enough fun for today. Back to the "honey dos."
Hello! I have a video on "Which Pen for What" that is about matching pens to the occasion. Just scroll down a few months back. I should do an update. Check it out, I think you would enjoy it. Here is the link (if this works!): ruclips.net/video/WgUXLz72dp4/видео.html I love your choices and your ideas. All fantastic. My attorney shares my love of pens. When I downsized my collection, I gave most of them to him. He currently uses a TWSBI Eco with a stub for signing docs. We did a closing together today and I used my MB 149. Wish you all the best!
Oh, the Sheaffer Legacy! What a beauty! Ignore those guys about the Safari! My friend bought me one in the 80's, and it is still my most beloved pen. I used it always in the work place, and everyone always commented about how nice it was, and my lovely handwriting!
Thanks Lynn! Yes, Sheaffer is so amazing Such a great pen. Yes, a lot of controversy over the Lamy. I love opposing points off view. Also, debate and conversation makes this hobby so much fun. We have a lot to talk about always. Great comment and all the best.
I have two of them and two of the reissued Crest models. I've always had a soft spot for Sheaffer's because, starting in second grade in the early sixties and up through high school, in my district we had to use fp's and almost all of us used those one-Dollar Sheaffer's cartridge pens and washable blue Skrip.
Well, I spend 3 days in the office and 2 working from home. I usually take 2 of my Lamy Al-Star pens with me, and I also take both of my Pilot Vanishing Point fps, and a Parker Duofold Centennial fp to the office. And on my desk I have a pen cup filled with about 20 Bic Stic ballpoints for people to use should they need something to write with. I write a lot with my pens at work, because I draft all the press releases and other stuff by hand with my pens, and when I am done, I hand the drafts to one of the student employees to type it out. People in the office usually come in a look at what pen I am using, and I have also converted a few of them to fountain pen users. I gifted them all a Lamy Safari zPen with a convertor and a bottle of ink. Overall, I find that using fps gets in a better state of mind, that allows for a wonderful work environment at the office. Thanks, Hemingway, you have made another very interesting and an informative video. Thank you, and have a happy 4th of July weekend. -Sid
Great list of five! The Pilot 823 is for sure a pen that the more I use the more I like. I have it with a fine nib, and it reveals always perfect with any kind of paper I use. It is an extremely reliable pen, aimed at writing. Another pen that I believe is a must, because it is a stealthy pen that anyway assures you the best writing experience one could only expect from a 1kUSD pen, is Pilot VP. Then I would include the Pelikan M1000, for its super outstanding nib and the constructive quality.
Dear Hemingway, I just enjoyed watching this video and I am really happy to see that there are more people like me who have a love for fountain pens and inks. I have not used any of the pens you mentioned in video, but I have used Sheaffer 440, Parker 45, Parker Frontier, Pelican Pelicako, Wing Sung 698 and some Jinhao models. For office use, I think the most desirable features of a pen (beside smooth and flawless writing) are (1) Being lightweight, and (2) Having sufficient ink storage to last for several pages when out on a field visit. I have now subscribed to your channel and look forward to more great stuff 😊
Thank you very much for joining our Merry Crew! I am happy to have you here. You list some great pens and you definitely have your priorities straight in regard to why. Wishing you all the best.
Thank you! I did not get a good response with my watch content so I have devised a way to slip them in there! I am glad that you caught that and enjoyed it. B Roll is always fun and a challenge because I want you guys to have some interesting things to look at when I am not on screen. All the best!
Really enjoyed your video. I have most of the pens here mentioned, Lamy Safari, Parker 51, Sheaffer Legacy Heritage, and Montblanc 149, and I couldn't agree with you more. Just subscribed to your channel.
Great video as always. I love the channel. Along with the pens, I also noticed your classy taste in watches as I spotted a couple of iconic pieces on your wrist such as the submariner and the seamaster 300. Are you going to do a watch collection video anytime soon?
Thanks very much! I appreciate that. I’m not sure if I will do watch content. It didn’t do very well. People seem to want to see pens. I am working them in on the B Roll. Thanks very much. It’s a GMT Master II, by the way.
Your selection is carefully made and exudes knowledge of fountain pens and human psychology. Personally, I would put my Parker Sonnet Cisele somewhere because it is elegant and classic, I have a special affection for it and it has never failed me. Thank you once again for making videos with such care.
I loved your perspectives on fountain pens. My first fp was the Lamy Safari Matte Black EF nib and I still have it and use it with Carbon ink for that ultimate black line and works great for sketching. No other Safari has done it for me like that one. I enjoyed the Lamy 2000 at work paired with Diamine Oxblood and I loved that combo. For ladies the Twisbi mini with it’s clear body can show off a beautiful ink color for infusing a bit of personality at work. I enjoyed your recommendation for Waterman, the Parker and the Schaefer.
Thank you very much! Lamy Safari is an excellent choice. I’ve never tried their EF, but I am sure it is nice. I am also a HUGE fan of Oxblood, such a great color. Thanks and all the best!
Nice list. I used to worry about the Montblanc 149 sending the wrong message, as you mention, but nowadays so few people use fountain pens that I hardly ever run into anyone else with such a pen, let alone a 149...
Sir I am fan of your videos and I also use fountain pen from last 12-13 yrs. I like to use Pierre Cardin specially Pierre Cardin momento and Pierre Cardin pen o matic.
Hello, I work in a metalworking factory and in an office. The most suitable set for me is: PARKER 51 black with steel cap, lead pencil from the set, a 4-color PARKER black and steel multipen from Germany (circa 1960). They add to the set a JUNGHANS AGENDA steel black strap watch and a FILOFAX Mini Finsbury model. A reliable and very sober set. Both the JUNGHANS and the PARKER 51 were designed by BAUHAUS designers and this is clearly perceived by the cleanliness of their shapes, creating a sensation of absolute harmony.
Great vid. Always nice to see my fellow fountain pen enthusiasts. My current edc is a twibi 580 aluminum. Custom EF grind. Great everyday pens. At home I keep my Mont Blanc 149. A classic which I hope to spend more time with one day.
Excellent choices, Hemingway!! Every single choice I couldn’t have made better! I don’t know which to put at the top, except that the Montblanc is so well known. What about the Parker Duofold?
Solid choices and nice thing you went through simple to more luxury choices. For office use Rotring 600 is an excellent choice. Bras body, won't roll off the desk, good nibs, doesn't scream money, understated.
Yes, yes, yes for the Parker 51, Waterman Carene, and Sheaffer! I am a big fan of "classic" fountain pens from the brands that led the way! I would add Cross Century II (because I have a lot of them.) I tend to like using "flashy" pens in meetings with others, but I always have some reliable "cheapies" that are great writers in my desk drawer! My favorites are the Kaweco Sport, Platinum Plaisir, and Pelikan Twist! Also, I generally stick to cartridges to avoid messes and running out of ink. I love my pens that will hold a "spare" cartridge inside the pen--very convenient! I will have to check out those Pilot Kakunos--love the smiley face on the nib!
Nice interesting video and presentation, thank you.. i am glad having the chance of having all your selection (except MB is in 146 )... waterman could be nice for signatures not for long writing, i also would like to replace the safari with the L2000 perfect performance with almost all common ink brands... What missed in the list... Pelikan recommend the M800... also parker deuofold and sonnet... in pilot the vanishing point (capless) is definitely a business FP... thank you
That, My Friend, is an interesting list. I just got a new VP so you will be seeing more of it in the future. Thanks for the kind words and stop by again.
Much more interesting list than I expected, with a couple gorgeosities. I like the all 'silver' look and if I could afford it would go for something in all actual silcer.
Hello and thank you! Pure silver would be cool. Grip and all. It would tarnish, I suppose. Still… so cool. Tudor Watch made a silver compound that resists tarnish. Hmmm.
Thanks for a great video - Very good content, and some lovely pens. I used to use a Montblanc 144, but it got way too much attention for me (snow-cap syndrome), so I switched to a Montblanc Noblesse 1124 stainless steel model, and a Caran d'Ache Ecridor. As slim, metal, cartridge pens, I can clip them into the inside pocket of my suit jacket, and whilst they look smart, they cause no reaction from colleagues or clients. They are also 100% reliable and tough. I used to work with a guy who carried a Montegrappa pen which was the size of a baby's arm and covered in glitz, so it takes all sorts! Most meetings began with a 10 minute discourse about his pen.
Even though I prefer screw-capped pens, there is something to be said for snap-caps in a workplace setting when in a hurry. Great video too, your videography is always so rich and detailed.
Thanks for the kind words on the videography. I push the extent of what one can do with an iPhone! Everything is shot with it, by the way. Thanks! I agree about the screw caps. They are great for ink longevity, but not much fun when you are dashing off notes. The Sheaffer may be perfect for a quick cap. All the best!
A TWSBI Eco with Rose Gold Triming brings a lot of class and elegance to the table as well. Reliable, consistent writer that don't break the bank! :D Love your presentation and suggestions Hemingway!
That is a great choice! I have one of those too. It has a stub and I often use it with fun shimmer and sheen inks. Fantastic suggestion and thanks for the kind words.
Thank you! That is a classic pen. You cannot go wrong with the vintage ones and they are remarkably affordable. Wish you all the best and thanks for watching.
The props are hilarious! What is the uncapped (!) pen doing in the purse? I disagree on the 149, for note taking (what a business pen primarily does) the nib is too big, better chose a 146 or even better 147. The Lamy drys out quickly, for my daily note taking pen, I want reliability. Montblanc, Kaweco, and most Japanese pens stay fresh for month or years.
Inlaid nibs are great. So beautiful. Pilot does a great job with their E95S. Another beauty. We have a Vanishing Point in the house and it's owned by my wife. She takes it to the office, so I should have thought beyond myself! All the best.
I second the Vanishing Point! I have a matte black one and it’s great for quick note taking and (a little) longer writing sessions. In an office setting going through my day to day, I can’t beat the click. I often find myself using my trackball with pen in hand, then I can click it to write down a note or two.
Have you tried Kaweco Sport? I love that they seal tight and fit in a pocket. Unposted, they are very short, but I have small hands so I still find them comfortable. I do prefer the added weight of writing with it posted.
I love the Kaweco Sport! It’s such a charming and effective pen. I left one inked for a year without using it and it wrote right away. Amazing. You will be seeing a lot of this pen very soon in an incoming list and video.
I love my Lamy Safari Vista in the fine nib. I love how it writes. I am expecting a new Lamy Safari white in the extra fine nib next week. I am excited.
I’m going to agree with your selection and they are all great performers ranging from sub $100 to over $800. Have you tried or have in your collection the Pilot Falcon? Oh man what a stupendous pen with it’s flexible nib.
Thank you Felix! I appreciate it. I do have a Falcon. I haven’t had the best luck with it. I need to re-ink it with some Kon-peki and reevaluate. Thanks and all the best.
Great video and information… my question is your ink preference. Which is best to minimize feathering and ghosting on recycled paper so common in business?
Thank you for an interesting video. My usual low-risk office pen is a vintage Parker 45, often a flighter but not always. These are very affordable, low-key, robust pens that perform really well. I've picked up very serviceable examples with gold nibs from the 1960s for less than £15. I'm definitely with you on the Parker 51, and I have the exact same pen as you. The "what would Don Draper use?" question is fun. I'd always thought of him as more of a Sheaffer "Pen For Men" guy, but maybe the '51 is a better fit given the creative element of his character. Aside from the '51 if I want to feel a bit more "business" I also go for my Parker Duofold Maxima, one of the 1950s/1960s aerometrics made in England. A big nib, good ink capacity, and a screw cap that makes me feel classier when I use it. For work, I also like to match the pen with its companion ballpoint, just in case there are times when I have to work with paper that's not fountain pen compatible. It's always a bit of a disappointment, but this approach at least maintains the aesthetic.
Hello Adrian, I like the way you think. You give these questions a lot of consideration as I do. I appreciate it very much. Those are some excellent choices as well. Thanks for watching. Do stop by again soon.
Great video! My 5 are: Lamy Safari; Visconti Van Gogh; Waterman Expert; Pelikan M605; and Montblanc 149. I have the Parker 51, vintage and modern, and like you I find awkward to use.
The Parker 51 was what I used at school. And so anytime I feel like I need a boost, it’s my go to pen of choice. I’m often surprised at how fountain pens strike up such wonderful conversations especially as I work a in fairly technical area. Great selection. I’d maybe add a TWSBI for their large ink capacity or a vintage esterbrook pocket pen (love these).
I love hearing about your connection to the parker 51. I also love a TWSBI. I should add those to every list! Wish you all the best and stop by again soon.
I m just 21 and I am now a days getting attracted to Fountain Pens and mechanical watches. Damn there are people like me who loves the instruments that breaths.
Great video Hemingway Jones. Subscribed! I run a PMO and take a copious amount of notes. My daily workhorse pen at work is a LAMY Safari Charcoal Black with a black ink cartridge. Reliable, and durable. It goes with me everywhere. Second, a Sailor Pro Gear Black with silver hardware. Medium nib that writes very finely. My final three are all Pelikan: Pelikan Souverän M600 Green Black F. My ‘extra shot of confidence’ pen is the Pelikan Souverän M805 Stresemann Grey. Finally, the Pelikan Souverän M1000 Black F. I swore I was finished acquiring but I’d really a Parker Sonnet Chiselled Silver GT.
Thanks very much and welcome! Nice choice for a daily. Safaris are suitable everywhere! Sailor is brilliant too. I love the M600 Soverain. Brilliant. Very good list!
I said Yah! when you listed the Lamy Safari . I have it in turquoise.....I got the 1.5 calligraphy nib & sure do like it. It gives my handwriting more interest. And ! After seeing/hearing about your Pilot Kakuno, I ordered one ! Will be delivered today. I got the turquoise cap w/white body, fine nib....& ordered the converter for it. I was tempted to get the yellow ...but maybe some other time. My favorite grandma always used a fountain pen. I believe it was a Parker. Wish I'd thought to ask for it when she died back in 1975 but I wasn't into fountain pens then.
Yay! Safari fan. Thanks! Oh man, the Kakuno is so twee, so cute and fun. They are not overly serious at all, but fun to write with. Let me know what you think when it arrives. Even the packaging is great. Very Nintendo. All the best!!!
@@HemingwayJones The Kakuno arrived ! You're right...this is a cute pen & to me, that's fun. It writes very nicely. W/the converter in it, I put Jacques Herbin Violet Boreal in it. I wanted a different color of ink than what my other fountain pens have in them (green, blue-black, turquoise). The Violet Boreal is pretty.....it'll be fun to write a letter w/that ink.
Such a fun topic for those of us who use fountain pens at work. I've rotated through many, but my current lineup is a Leonardo Momento Zero Grande with Iroshizuku Shin-Kai for my signature pen. The blue black is perfect. I find my self using my Pilot Custom 74 with Kon-Peki quite a bit. My unsung heroes are two TWSBI ECOS. I love them for their infinite capacity, and they're both rock solid writers as well. Thinking of adding a custom 823 since I want to see if the hype is justified.
149 and 823 were ‘usual suspects’.. Choice of Vintage pens (51 and Legacy) for business meetings was a little surprise, but not unexpected.. But I didn’t expect a Safari to make it to this list ! Being in Software industry with almost all meetings being virtual, I don’t usually get to carry and use my pens outside of my house..But the only time I attended Offsite meetings / training sessions in the last 3 years, I carried a Vanishing point and a Sheaffer Intensity (both Black with GT). Needless to say that I was the only one using fountain pens in these sessions 😞
Thanks very much. I am glad you like the list. As for the Safari, I wanted an affordable option and one that is tough and has many styles to suit all budgets. Vanishing Point would have been a great addition to my list. Thanks!
Thanks for a great video. I always enjoy seeing what pens people use. I was pleased to see that you put the Parker 51 in you Top 5 list. The 51 is in my TOP 5 list, too. The other pens in my Top 5 list are the Lamy Studio LX (EF), Lamy Al Star (cursive - I love that nib), Parker 75 (EF 14K) and Benu Talisman Shooting Star (F).
I like Safari, but it's not a pen I would take to the office. Maybe because I really like those vibrant colors. Re Montblanc, 149 is a beautiful pen but a bit too big for my hand. It's great for signature, but I can't use it for anything longer. My favourite office pen is MB 146 ("LeGrand") with an EF nib, so I can still write on cheap office paper. In situations when MB is a too bold statement, I use Sheaffer Prelude (brushed chrome, F nib). It's very comfortable.
I had a job that required signatures all day. I carried a different every day. Have all of your business pens except the Waterman. Used several Pelicans as well as MB 146. Do you have a MB 146 or 145. Enjoyed this video. WLF
Thank you very much! I appreciate the kind comments. I don’t have a 145 or 146. I want the calligraphy nib on the 146. I need to track that down. All the best.
What a fantastic, well crafted video Mr. Jones, I thoroughly enjoyed it. Well, since you asked, would you consider including a Pelikan M800/1000 in this list or not? and why? Thanks!
Thank you very much! I appreciate it greatly. I love those Pelikan pens and see them as perfect business pens. I only have an M200 & an M600. I recommend pens that I have direct experience with. They are perfect for the office and board room and have a certain cultured refinement.
Well I am definitely a late comer because I started using a fountain pen just 10 months ago but now I am addicted to it, and I almost can not write without it. I have the pilot metropolitan and I am thinking about buying a custom 74. I didn't choose the safari because in my opinion it do not offers the same at the same price as the metropolitan.
I would only keep Reynolds fludo, or pierre cardin penomatic, they are very reliable and never dry out so I don't have to think about ink. Also I don't like to be center of attention so nothing flashy
Bravo Hemingway, an absolute peach of a video,This video is not just about fountain pens but also about you're wonderful sartorial style. I have Both the Lamy Safari and a new Parker 51 deluxe fine nib, I would have also potentially included a Lamy 2000 or Parker Duofold. Keep on doing what you are doing, the content is first class.
Thank you, Frank for the kind comment. I am so glad that you enjoyed it. I am actually a little annoyed with myself that I didn’t dress for the office when I filmed it. The reason is that I film on weekends when my 5 yo isn’t up, but it would have made it better. Lamy 2000 is excellent. Thanks very much for the kind words and encouragement. I hope you drop by again.
Love this one. I looked Into my drawer of forgotten items and found a Parker 51 in very dark blue from the late fourties with a silver cap. Filled it up with a green mystery ink that was also hidden somewhere in a beaut. art deco bottle called Rubinato Verde Inchiostro . Long story short: one P51 back in rotation.
Thanks so much for watching this one. I am so glad you enjoyed it and you found an awesome pen there in the Parker 51, just Classic. Stop by again soon.
Great choices as usual. Very interesting and classic pen designs and good horology elements combination. I like to have a couple of ballpoint pens with me always. The Cross Townsend in sterling silver performs flawlessly and the Fisher INFINIUM is a solid back up. - Good video.
my choice would depend on the situation and would consider function first, jewelers second (but important). For notes in a lecture situation, I would choose a pen with a slip cap and fine nib, perhaps the 51 or a Waterman. The Pelikan pens are always a great choice for elegance and quiet jewelry effect. Never a safari. I own a Waterman Le Man Opera Master, it gets the attention of those who own the always-present Mont Blanc blingers
Forget the pens now. I too wear a many Winchester shirts. In fact it's either a white or Winchester shirt. Most of them are blue or blue striped, but I have some other colors like red, grey and wheat. Love my braces/suspenders as well. My favorite pair has the Chrysler Building running down them.
@@HemingwayJones The Winchester shirt is shirt you wore in the photo. It is a dress shirt with a contrasting collar, almost always white. Some shirts also have white cuffs. I personally call them the 'financial' shirt. It tries to copy the detachable collar.
As a happy vintage Parker "51" owner I have to ask about your "51" - that pen looks like new! I'm thinking that's an early '40s Vacumatic "51". The cap especially looks like it brand new, if I am correct in identifying it as Rhodium-plated Sterling Silver? Also may I ask the pen's year of manufacture, the nib size, and the ink you're using in the video? Thanks; and thank you for the great videos.
You are right on, My Friend. The ink is, I believe, Waterman Blue. I have the jar next to it in the video, so I am guessing from that. I honestly don’t remember now, I am afraid. Thanks so much for watching.
i love Lamy 2000, its a highest tier work pen, also Kaweco Supra or brass/steel Kaweco Sport, preferably with a swapped gold nib are just a work monsters
It sure how to communicate with you as a member. I want to get a pen this weekend and think I have narrowed it down to the Montblanc or Pelican? What is the best all purpose nib and I was thinking about just starting with a medium and figuring it out?
Agree that Pelikan M600 is a great business pen. I used one day in day out for 10 years, carried in a pen loop attached to a note book, so it had a pretty tough life, getting dropped in car parks etc. It worked faultlessly, usually with my favourite black ink, Rohrer & Klinger Leipziger Schwarz.
Setting aside the pens, this video was full of very elegant props and some exotic locations. All enjoyable to watch. I suppose business pens or office pens are dependant on the kind of work you do. I don't think the Lamy Safari is super impressive in a work environment especially when compared to the others on your list. I would have left that one out. The other four pens were really excellent pens for business use. If I had to choose one it would have to be the 149.
Hi David! You know I love the 149. I should have specified that some office environments are job sites and rougher or that some folks are at different levels. I feel that there is space for the Lamy. Others may have gone Metro, but I am still in a fight with that pen! Thanks for the kind comment on my B Roll. I strive to make it interesting. I was down in Philadelphia and Input it to good use.
I can’t believe you didn’t mention TWSBI! Any of the the TWSBIs should be on the office field list for their beauty and ink capacity. They’re cheap and reliable. For me their only drawback is that I’ve become addicted to watching the ink slosh around(especially with the shimmer inks).
@@lizdelisle1912 I am sitting in my office right now, writing with a TWSBI Eco Fine nib, so there is that. I also have my Pilot Custom 823 with me. All the best.
I bought a new Parker 51 and I love the design. However, using it is a pain. The ink won‘t flow properly, it stops while writing all the time and after a day or so it won‘t even start at all, even with Kon-Peki in the converter. Any suggestions?
Hmmm, Kon-peki fixes many things. I did a whole video on that. Did you clean it before you first filled it? That is important. Sometimes some oil remains for manufacturing and fouls everything up. If that doesn't work, I would invoke the warranty.
Is it still within warranty because I'd return it. I have three vintage Parker 51s which will write without skipping or hard starts even though I leave inked up for weeks at a time. In not too happy with the new version but you'll have paid enough for it so do get in touch with the shop you bought it from or use the warranty.
I agree with Genevieve. I have Vintage Parker "51"s and when in good condition / restored, they perform flawlessly. I wrote with one today I haven't used in 3-4 weeks and it wrote perfectly from the moment the nib touched the page. You can buy top notch condition used "51"s for half what the new gold nib 51 will cost. And with that, you are getting the real Parker hooded nib and ink delivery system, which the new 51 does not use. That the "51" is a good size and feel for my preferences is of course a deal maker as I find the "51" to be literally a perfect pen. That said, the owner/user experience can be more easily met by opting for the Aerometric "51"s, made from 1948 to the late 60s; I would suggest the earlier "51" Vacumatic from 1941 - 1948 has a different filling system and is less owner-serviceable but still a fantastic pen if you get a fully restored one. It'll probably outlive you before needing its next service.
I like to use a black and silver Pilot Vanishing Point in the office. But when I am in the field doing cyber stuff on servers I want a brightly colored pen like an apple green Lamy Safari. I find that the bright color helps me locate it amongst the chaos of a server room.
Substitute a Pelikan M800/M1000 or a Yard-O'led pen for the 149. These are just as much "power pens", but say that you don't just go along with the crowd. Also a St. Dupont, though older models might do.
Don Draper used a steel parker jotter. There's an episode when his secretary dies and you can see him writing notes in a meeting. Also the episode when he is journaling about "Why I'm quitting tobacco". Great video, looking to get a lamy 2000 soon!
In reality (unless it's a FP related business meeting) Montblanc 146/149 would be the most appropriate choice and is also the choice I see the most. Some classy (black or blue) Pelikans can also be seen in the wild, especially "popular" among engineers, architects and alike. Anything other than these two will automatically put you into a FP geek camp and will earn extra respect points from me. IMHO, I'd avoid anything with "made in Italy" on it for any serious business activities (unless you want to have a 30min side discussion titled "what is this pen"). Some other good choices are: Waterman Hemisphere, Montblanc Rouge et Noir, Pilot Vanishing point and of course S.T. Dupont (not lashy ones)
They would have been great additions. The only thing is that the M200 loves to come undone in my pocket! That’s my only issue with it. My M600 is solid. All the best and thanks for your kindness.
Agree with all of those, except the Safari, which I find ugly, and have the 823 and the Montblanc myself (albeit the smaller 146). Despite my feelings about the Safari, I would include another lamy in my list, the 2000, which is reliable, smooth, and brings a touch of modern understated elegance. I'd also add the Parker Duofold
I know this comment is being made a long time after the video was first posted, but I noticed on "Mad Men" that Don Draper used a red and silver Parker jotter. When I've watched "Mad Men" I look at the pens being used and they all seem to be consistent with the time period. I have an identical Parker jotter that I found on a sidewalk 43 years ago and it's doing just fine after all this time.
Greetings from Germany. My old blue Lamy safary from my school times is still in business. And with me in the office. I'm collecting fountain pens since 10 years, but my safary is still the allrounder in my life.
Wonderful! The Safari is classic!
A top quality presentation
Thank you kindly
I would add the Lamy 2000, in black makralon. That guy is so reliable and understated, it screams competence and modesty.
Thank you very much! I love that pen. It is so fun. Shaeffer is a great brand for vintage stuff.
Wonderful! Thanks so much. Happy to have you here. All the best.
I need to get myself a Pilot Custom 823 one of these days... Maybe after my next really big closing :)
My essential fountain pens for business include the E95s for signing contracts, TWSBI Vac 700 (with the 1.1 stub) for thank you and Christmas card to clients/agents, but then I use my Platinum Plaisir in the field for showings as my work horse pen because it is cheap AND very durable, and lastly, I use my Pilot Vanishing Point during my Tuesday business meetings because of how easy it is to "cap" and "uncap" while taking notes.
I loved your list, in part because of how you painted a picture of why you would choose that pen on that day.
Thanks so much!
Wow. What a beautiful collection! I am thinking of buying the Pilot 823 after watching your review.
Thank you very much!
Thanks very much. Pelikan is a great choice. Using a less expensive option in some situations is a smart idea. All the best.
I love bringing my Twisbi Eco to work, because it gets a lot of people going "is that a fountain pen?" Then I get to talk about pens until they regret their question.
Nice! So fun! Love that pen.
Here is the link (if this works!):
ruclips.net/video/WgUXLz72dp4/видео.html
I love your choices and your ideas. All fantastic.
My attorney shares my love of pens. When I downsized my collection, I gave most of them to him. He currently uses a TWSBI Eco with a stub for signing docs. We did a closing together today and I used my MB 149.
Wish you all the best!
You Sir are such a vibe❣️✨
Really enjoyable content!
Thank you! I appreciate that. Wishing you all the best.
Yes, Sheaffer is so amazing
Such a great pen.
-Sid
Lovely comment. Thank you very much. You are a great ambassador and evangelist for this hobby. Wish you all the best!
That’s a great list. Thank you! The Pilot VP is a great pen. It’s just so handy. My wife has one and I often “borrow” it! All the best.
i bought the lamy vista for this. particularly so its easier tell where the ink is empty. im loving it my new favorite pen
That is a fantastic choice!
Dear Hemingway,
I just enjoyed watching this video and I am really happy to see that there are more people like me who have a love for fountain pens and inks.
Love the added watch content, Seamaster, GMT and Tank talk, amazing. The LV was a lovely touch.
Thank you very much! I am happy to have you here.
Nice selection. Broad range to choose from. Well curated and inspiring. Congrats and thank you.
Thank you very much!
Your selection is carefully made and exudes knowledge of fountain pens and human psychology. Personally, I would put my Parker Sonnet Cisele somewhere because it is elegant and classic, I have a special affection for it and it has never failed me. Thank you once again for making videos with such care.
Thank you very much for the kind words and I am so happy that you enjoy my videos. You keep me going and I appreciate it.
I like the Waterman Carene in Black with black ink. It writes smoothly and the appearance of the nib is impressive.
Nice! Black is classic.
Nice list. I used to worry about the Montblanc 149 sending the wrong message, as you mention, but nowadays so few people use fountain pens that I hardly ever run into anyone else with such a pen, let alone a 149...
That’s a good point. In my world, when I run into another FP owner it usually is a 149. A lot of finance guys. All the best.
Sir I am fan of your videos and I also use fountain pen from last 12-13 yrs. I like to use Pierre Cardin specially Pierre Cardin momento and Pierre Cardin pen o matic.
Thank you very much! Those are solid choices.
Very good choices! You write well. Great comment.
Great vid. Always nice to see my fellow fountain pen enthusiasts. My current edc is a twibi 580 aluminum. Custom EF grind. Great
everyday pens. At home I keep my Mont Blanc 149. A classic which I hope to spend more time with one day.
Wonderful choices! Thanks for watching!
Nice video! I miss my beloved and beautifully understated Pelikan M805
That is a fantastic Pen. thanks for the kind comment.
Excellent choices covering most requirements. Thank you.
Thanks for watching.
Wonderful video! You always brighten my day. Thanks!
Thank you very much, Linda!
Excellent choices, Hemingway!! Every single choice I couldn’t have made better! I don’t know which to put at the top, except that the Montblanc is so well known.
What about the Parker Duofold?
Thanks very much for the kind comment! The Duofold is a nice pen. It's a little small for me, so that's why I left it of the list.
Solid choices and nice thing you went through simple to more luxury choices. For office use Rotring 600 is an excellent choice. Bras body, won't roll off the desk, good nibs, doesn't scream money, understated.
Understated is good. I am going to do something on understated pens. That is the perfect touch for many situations. Thanks very much.
Thank you Mara! Great choices all. I love your collection. Cross is a great addition. All the best.
Nice pens. Nice watch!
Thank you!
Thanks for watching and I am glad you enjoyed it. Thanks for the great perspective too. Stop by again soon. All the best.
Love your presentation and suggestions Hemingway!
That is a great choice! I have one of those too. It has a stub and I often use it with fun shimmer and sheen inks. Fantastic suggestion and thanks for the kind words.
I have a Diamond 580 with the rose gold and it is indeed elegant and you can spend the money you've saved on more ink!
Great story telling mate. Youve given me something to think about! Now i want a parker 51.
Usually uncapped pens are in my pocket! I love that big nib on the 149. It’s perfect for me. All the best.
I'm shocked a Vanishing Point didn't make the list.
I hope to someday get a Waterman Carène or Sheaffer Legacy. Love those classy inlaid nibs.
A great selection for sure !!!
Thank you!
I love my Lamy Safari Vista in the fine nib. I love how it writes. I am expecting a new Lamy Safari white in the extra fine nib next week. I am excited.
Congratulations! Excellent choice. Absolutely brilliant pens
@@HemingwayJones I agree & I am also expecting an Kaweco Sport Natural Coconut with a Fine nib. Have you did a review on this brand of fountain pen?
I did some stuff on the Brass Sport and mentioned the regular Sports in some lists. Yours sounds amazing.
@@HemingwayJones I will look for the content. Thank you
Sir please make a video on these pens or share your opinion.
I will! I’ll do reviews on each, for the ones I haven’t done already.
Hi, love your channel. The Pilot Custom 823 and Montblanc 149 are the Perfect choices here, I just love mine.🤗 Cheers
Thank you, John! Very kind of you to say. Those are great choices. All the best.
I use the Lamy Safari in office, maybe the only one between 1500 employees. It has become my "best friend" for many years now.
That is an excellent choice!
Love your show. I am a fountain pen collector too. Not as prolific as you, but I am trying.
Thank you, John! Remember, I have an an unfair advantage, I have sponsors over a TT that send me pens. Plus I’m old and spoil myself. All the best!
My Lamy Al-star is in my top pens in my collection. So well built
An excellent pen! Sadly, I don’t have one. You have chosen… wisely!
Great video and information… my question is your ink preference. Which is best to minimize feathering and ghosting on recycled paper so common in business?
Hello and thanks. There are non feathering inks from Noodler’s. Also, you can use an EF nib that will tone your lines down. All the best!
@@HemingwayJones thank you, I knew you’d know that one.
Great list. Love the Visconti. MB 149 is one of my favorites. All the best.
Happy to have you here!
My final three are all Pelikan:
Pelikan Souverän M600 Green Black F.
A pleasure to hear you
Thank you!
I said Yah! when you listed the Lamy Safari .
Hi Barry, I love the 823. I feel it is so refined, so expressive, so perfectly rendered. All the best.
That is a good list. I love Benu. Their pens are so interesting.
Man your voice is soothing af 💯👍
Thank you! I really appreciate that!
Excellent and sensible choices. I need a 146. I’d love with the flex nib. All the best.
Those are great choices! You could have an amazing selection of fountain pens without ever leaving Pilot. All the best!
Really enjoyed that
Thank you!
I would only keep Reynolds fludo, or pierre cardin penomatic, they are very reliable and never dry out so I don't have to think about ink. Also I don't like to be center of attention so nothing flashy
Wisely chosen! Thanks.
Thank you very much!
my choice would depend on the situation and would consider function first, jewelers second (but important).
Very nice, indeed! I quite like Pelikan. They make some excellent pens.
That sounds charming. What is a Winchester shirt? Thanks!
@@HemingwayJones The Winchester shirt is shirt you wore in the photo. It is a dress shirt with a contrasting collar, almost always white. Some shirts also have white cuffs. I personally call them the 'financial' shirt. It tries to copy the detachable collar.
Gotcha. Thanks. I forgot I had that photo in there. Thanks!
Thanks so much for watching.
what do you think about caran d ache
Hello! I like them, but I don't own one so I have only had casual contact with one. I'd love to dig in more.
Omg. Those embedded nib pens. Totally added to wish list. 😍
They are so cool! Thanks for watching.
i love Lamy 2000, its a highest tier work pen, also Kaweco Supra or brass/steel Kaweco Sport, preferably with a swapped gold nib are just a work monsters
I have the Kaweco Brass in my top spot on another list that is coming up. All the best!
It sure how to communicate with you as a member. I want to get a pen this weekend and think I have narrowed it down to the Montblanc or Pelican? What is the best all purpose nib and I was thinking about just starting with a medium and figuring it out?
You can email me at hemingwayjones@mac.com. Let me know which MB and Pelikan! Excited for you.

Pelikan M600 a runner-up?
Should have been. Mine is so bling I don’t think of it as a business pen. In green stripe though, absolutely!
Fun video. I, of course, vote Waterman :)
Thank you! Great choice.
Sir, would you answer to an unrelated question? I want to know about your shaving method - DE, SR, or cartridge.
Sure, I use a safety razor, brush, and Crema shave cream.
@@HemingwayJones thanks, nice shave!
@@MeteCanKarahasan My Pleasure!
I like to use a black and silver Pilot Vanishing Point in the office. But when I am in the field doing cyber stuff on servers I want a brightly colored pen like an apple green Lamy Safari. I find that the bright color helps me locate it amongst the chaos of a server room.
That is an excellent choice!
Substitute a Pelikan M800/M1000 or a Yard-O'led pen for the 149. These are just as much "power pens", but say that you don't just go along with the crowd.
Also a St. Dupont, though older models might do.
They are absolutely on the same tier. Love M1000. I really need to get one.
All the best!
A navy Montegrappa Extra would be stylish and formal.
Very nice!
Absolutely brilliant list. Thank you. Waterman pens are lovely and largely unloved in the US.
Nice list, I agree with you but I think that the Pelikan M200 or 400 should be in that list too , don't you think? Greetings from Madrid
They would have been great additions. The only thing is that the M200 loves to come undone in my pocket! That’s my only issue with it. My M600 is solid. All the best and thanks for your kindness.
Right now today I’m using my blue twisbi. I will switch to my lamey strawberry safari for next week.
Two great choices! I have a clear Eco. It becomes the color of whatever ink I put in there.
According to me Cartier trinity fountain and ballpoint pens are heritage
I’m not a fan of ballpoints but I’m all in on the Fountain Pen! All the best.
A nice summary. Perhaps the Lamy 2000 as an honorable mention ( an a sizabke inkwell to boot)
I’d probably include it if I were making this now. Thanks.
Hi Simon, I like the 2000, but don’t own one. I should do something about that. Great choice and I cannot argue.
Hemingway Jones, the details guy. 😉
Thanks!
That’s wonderful. What a find! I encourage all comments on any video. Thank you.
I love my blue vintage Parker '51. It's probably from the 1950s.
