  • Shams-ud-din Muhammad Hafiz (c. 1320-1389) is one of the most beloved poets of the Persians, and is considered by many - from different cultures - to be one of the seven literary wonders of the world. Ralph Waldo Emerson and Johann Wolfgang agreed. As Emerson said of Hafiz: "He fears nothing. He sees too far, he sees throughout; such is the only man I wish to see or be." And Emerson gave Hafiz that grand and famous compliment, "Hafiz is a poet for poets." And after Geothe's deep study of him, simply - though remarkably - stated, "Hafiz has no peer."

3 poems from I Heard God Laughing translation by Daniel Ladinsky
    TRIPPING OVER JOY
    What is the difference
    Between your experience of Existence
    And that of a saint?
    The saint knows
    That the spiritual path
Is a sublime chess game with God
    And that the Beloved
Has just made such a Fantastic Move
That the saint is now continually
    Tripping over Joy
    And bursting out in Laughter
    And saying, “I Surrender!”
    Whereas, my dear,
I am afraid you still think
You have a thousand serious moves.”
    DROP THE KNIFE
“Once a young woman said to me,
    “Hafiz, what is the sign?
    of someone who knows God?”
    I became very quiet,
and looked deep into her eyes,
    then replied,
“My dear, they have dropped the knife.
Someone who knows God has dropped
    the cruel knife
that most so often use upon their tender self
    and others.”
    I AM SO GLAD
    Start seeing everything as God,
    But keep it a secret.
Become like a man who is Awestruck
    And Nourished
    Listening to a Golden Nightingale
Sing in a beautiful foreign language
    While God invisibly nests
    Upon its tongue.
    Hafiz,
Who can you tell in this world
That when a dog runs up to you
    Wagging its ecstatic tail,
You lean down and whisper in its ear,
    "Beloved,
I am so glad You are happy to see me.
    Beloved,
    I am so glad,
So very glad You have come."
