I’ve lived in Michigan my entire life and macaroni salad is elbow noodles, celery, onion and canned tuna with garlic, pepper, salt, dill, hard boiled egg and mayo!
I'm from Illinois, and I make mine the same way but without the egg. I've never heard that before, but I'm intrigued enough to put it on my grocery list. 😂
All my town keeps putting in mexican restaurants. Sorry we're not a big town but can we please bring some variety back. Reminds me of tuna casserole. I learned a tip cook your pasta, drain mix it with some heavy cream or half and half put in the fridge for a few hours or overnight. Then mix with your other ingredients. This keeps the macaroni from sucking up all your sauce and drying out.
Nope my moms macaroni salad is the best. Helmans Mayo is the best and she used roasted chicken with chopped red onions , a little sugar,salt and pepper, White wine vinegar and cold green peas. So freaking good! We ate all summer long.
I love Hawaiian Mac salad. I’ve never had it with the tuna though. When I visit our local Hawaiian BBQ restaurant there, macaroni salad does not have the tuna in it. I am lucky to get decent Hawaiian Mac salad & other HI classics here on the northern plains! Surprisingly, Montana is very popular among Hawaiians who move to the Western & Northern hemispheres. And we get food influences from the loads of students from US Pacific territories & places like the Federated States of Micronesia who have special status - our out of state tuition is low in my city especially & after schools started recruiting Samoan football players, the Oceania - Montana pipeline was established. We don’t have a Hawaiian restaurant anymore, but for 30 years had an exceptional fusion Hawaiian & Montana fine dining place that always started with the spam sushi (musubi?) and I got brownie points with the chef for recognizing lomi lomi..,going to miss that place so much!!! His Mac salad was incredible, midwestern style is gross gross gross!

I make my own recipe macaroni salad. Macaroni, red onion, frozen peas & carrots. 4 strips of crispy bacon, 2 cups of shredded cheese (I use Colby Jake) 😊 Hellmans, a couple of TLB spoons of Ranch seasoning salt & pepper to taste. I always make it a day ahead, it’s just better that way. Enjoy!!
I would probably make prople grossed out by my mac salad lol Its got the mayo/sugar/bit of mustard salt/pepper dressing with macaroni/chopped celery/chopped onion/chopped fine dill pickle/ chopped ham cubes/chopped small cheddar cubes and occasionally chopped red or green sweet bell pepper. If its just for me and daughter i might put chopped up radishes and chopped up hard boiled egg in too. Clean the fridge mac salad dinner lol

That recipe is similar to one of ours but instead of tuna onion and carrots we put shredded chicken peas and corn and pickles with a little bit chicken broth and lemon juice

This is true but the cultures are wildly different due to the different people that mainly live there. Hawaii has many more asian influences compared to the midwest region of America (I’m assuming she lives here)

According to americas test kitchen Hawaiian pasta salad has sugar and milk in it and no tuna. But I’m sure there’s more than one. Yours looks tasty. I would try it but grating carrots is a no for me. I’m way too lazy for that.

Mac Salad did not originate in Hawaii. The Germans made Macaroni first with the mayo and trimmings. After that each culture made its own kind using the Germans version as the base.

When I make Hawaiin BBQ food, I make macaroni with tuna & shredded carrots! If you go to any Hawaiin restaurants, this is how they serve it, with tuna!

As an actual indigenous Hawaiian. Mac salad is not Hawaiian. And if we make Mac salad. It’s potatoes and hard boiled eggs with olives and carrots. I have never had what you made. And I am born and raised in Hawai’i my family has been in Hawai’i for thousands of years. Mac salad is American. And we use best foods mayo. Not hellmans.
