UMA is truly going to be the most unique sailboat on the seas! There will be others out there who will claim “custom built”, but how many will TRULY be customized… designed, engineered and built by the owners own hands, AFTER spending close to 10 years with various iterations of her?? I can’t think of any other boat that will have had THIS level of love, attention to detail, demanding quality… you two are absolutely amazing and inspirational for tackling this labour of love!!! I agree this boat has been and will be like no other boat. However, Uma isn't the only custom build to sail on the worlds oceans. RUclips brings the story of this talented couples dream built to us all for our enjoyment. I'm not taking anything away from Uma she is a wonderful creation built with true love by two very creative people.
Sailing Uma is merely rebuilding the interior of a fiberglass hull. Ran Sailing is building the entire boat from naval custom plans!

Such an interesting blog, i dont know how you do it day after day. When you are on watch do you havs a set routine? Do you sign on or into your watch. Can we see a copy of the start of your watch from the log. Do you have a check list, speed, depth, wind direction, next way point ect? When your not well, do you skip eating and cooking. These just some of the things that interest me. Thanks.

if its that close you might be able to just bow the plywood enough to shorten the distance between the two edges. Not that that really matters now since you got it in.

One of my favourite channels! I made myself avoid watching for a month or so, so that I could binge watch a bunch of episodes! I’m in my happy place with this today!
Wondering about the plywood in bilge area (and any underwater line of boat wood) if you plan to glass it over, mostly to prevent water damage to the wood; should it accidently come into contact with water or oil/oil products. Yes I know you have electric propulsion, but its nice to have a spare generator should you need it and that requires a petroleum product...
If you plan to glass over the wood, would you consider vacuum bagging the wood to pre wrap the wood before installing it into place?
I see you have gotten alot of information and knowledge to get the boat the right shape from when you had it sitting in the water. That is alot of hard work you two have done.
Will you be insulating between the the hull and the interior of the boat to the thickness of the ribs? Will you insulate over all the ribs and horizontal structures to break the bridging of heat and/or cold from the outside?
have you considered an above the waterline thru hull for the forward drain? That's what I've got on my classic plastic. Keeps the bilge dry

No more complaints of the heat .. presumably the "oversized aircon" is coping admirably ..stay strong and focused .Sailing UMA is my go to daily viewing
You guys are super dedicated ..many years ago condensation on ceilings in our converted bus /camper, caused a huge overnight problem with the water / condensation dripping down all over the floors and bedding .improving the air circulation and insulating the ceiling went a long way to solving the condensation issues .I am confident that you will be addressing any possibility of condensation / mould propagating closed / hidden zones . I vividly recall your findings when you were tearing the interior apart. It must be a huge problem on / in a live aboard boat .the rebuild is progressing at an amazing pace .. Stay safe and I wish you a boatload of enthusiasm for the rebuild challenges which must be looming in a seemingly endless. ,list of things to do .stay strong ..
easily one of the best episodes of the rebuild, your dedication to telling a story through the time jumps is really impressive. It's starting to look like a boat again, I can't wait.
You guys have worked so hard to get to this point. I am so happy for you. Now you can start making that hull into a home to travel the wild oceans.
Hemp rope is hard to find these days without oil soaked into it--but it is worth seeking out as a useful adjunct to fibreglass work. To use it, as one example, I mark where I am going to put a bulkhead, put a line of pins where it is to land, soak my hemp rope (or coconut fibre, but hemp is best) in slow cure epoxy resin, then lay it in position. It forms a strong rib, and when I am ready to install the bulkhead I but it against this rope barrier, using a mixture of epoxy resin and Cabosil. One can buy rope made out of cotton for this purpose but I find hemp to be superior.
This idea comes into its own when there is to be a longitudinal stringer, when tension can be applied to a dry rope, the epoxy painted on to saturation, and then when set a perfectly straight stringer is possible. Excess fibres can be singed off or sanded off.

Hard to believe this is the same Uma with a waggly keel from way back when you first got her. The time spent getting those first bulkheads true, plumb, square, and parallel will be saved ten times over as a solid reference for the rest of the fit out. But you two know that, and it's a pleasure to watch.

Love your work! Question: Is the very bottom bottom of the wood bulkheads sealed from water that will be in the bilge? Just didn't see you seal those.
Their sealed inside glass tabbing… any exposed edges will be sealed and painted. But wood behind glass is already sealed. No need for the extra steps.
At 17:07 Dan is shaking the bulkhead just as the audio goes to the sound of peel ply being ripped off, I thought he broke it. :)

Great work, I can assure you that boat was never originally assembled to that level of accuracy. It is fun to watch stuff being done the right way. Years ago I got to tour a portion of the Hinkley Factory in Maine. Now they do things right there. On one cabinet door the worker was applying 35 coats of hand rubbed finish wet sanded between coats. Crazy beautiful work, but paid for by middle east oil tykoons. Money was no object. :-)
Haha. Yeah our original main Bulkhead was out of plumb by almost 10 degrees!! You could eyeball it straighter than that.

Good way of making templates, I used to use a joggle stick.
We’ve used that technique before, but find it too inaccurate. Also hard to visualize the final piece and make sure it’s the size you want it to be

Great question. It is as accurate as we can make it (maybe 2-3cm off in some areas) doing this was with a combination of measuring the spaces and scanning the space with the camscan app on our phone. :) hope this helps

Sure. Micro balloons work. We’re using talc because it’s cheap and available locally. And since it’s all interior work, it doesn’t really matter. We wouldn’t use talc on the exterior or below the waterline.

I get wanting everything to look right, but honestly, making everything square down to the thousandth of an inch? And of course you want things to be level, but really we are talking about surfaces that will be moving side to side and fore and aft even at anchor. Once off the hard nothing inside that boat will ever be perfectly horizontal or vertical for more than a few moments. Yes, make everything look right, but spending an entire day on measurements? get the important ones right so your doors fit and your appliances line up with their plumbing, but there is a point of too far. anyways, love the chann and look forward to every new post.
The thing is, if it’s off, we’ll notice. And it will drive us nuts!!!! So we’re putting in the time now, so we don’t regret not doing it later.

I am also impressed. I thought at one time it was way too big of a job for 2 young kids to take on. You didn't have experience in boat building and didn't know how to get this work done. I was afraid you wouldn't make it as a couple when times get tough and it was taking too much time for such a big project. I thought one or both of you would get overwhelmed with the task. You both have surprised me, not too many would still be motivated and thrilled to see the daily progress you two show.
Kika you are doing an amazing job; you sometimes lack confidence in yourself, but you shouldn't because you are doing an amazing job with the build, not to mention you can sail a large sailboat to the Arctic with no problem. Keep up the good work both of you, this old grandma in Holland, Michigan is very proud of you both and admires your work ethic.
I promise you that the manufacturer did not line those bulkheads up that well. You are building a whole boat inside your boat! Very impressive!
This week on "This Old Boat" Master Craftsman Dan will weld water to the exterior of the hull to increase stability by 10%, but first, he will create a new welding technology...😊. I look forward to every episode.

I’m a very keen sailor (45ft S/Y) and an engineer. Simply, you guys are phenomenal! I’m in awe.
This is my favourite part. I can't wait to see the plan come together, it's such a satisfying feeling watching an empty space turn into a liveable space.
Never mind the sailing, I could just watch a channel where you two continuously build boats....
Now that you are effectively rebuilding from scratch I have this question: How do you now feel about taking this boat as far North as you have in the state you now know she was in ?

I’m guessing they would not have attempted it if they knew then what they know now, but I’d love to hear their reply to that!

So often I've seen work done shoddily simply because of the grim determination to get the job done. It is very refreshing to see people putting great effort into making the job the best it can be, by sacrificing "easy". Your efforts will pay off and you'll have an awesome new Uma!

You should be smoothing out all the 90° inner edges with a “fillet”. Having sharp edge creates stress concentrations and over time will cause your bulkheads to separate from the haul (again)
Yes. We did. And showed it.
@@SailingUma the fillet doesn’t really seem to be enough. It looked maybe 1/4” (0.5cm) at the most. The fillets on the haul bracing seems to me closer to an inch (2.5cm). The flexibility of the haul and bracing is completely different to plywood that is perpendicular. The bulkhead bracing looks to be at least 2” (5cm) thick, even if they were made using plywood in the most ideal orientation entombed in fiberglass; it will still flex exponentially more from the water compared to the huge piece of plywood. Any large amount of flex (or impact but you would have bigger issues) would cause separation from the stress concentrating at that 90° joint. An adequately sized fillet similar to the haul bracing will double at a minimum, more likely quadruple the bound strength between the haul and the bulkheads. Basically you are trying to prevent the haul brace from flexing independently relative to the bulkheads which are incapable of flexing

I'm guessing that the rest of the bulkhead will be laminated so as to keep it waterproof and therefore rigid when wet . It would mean the boat would be salvageable if it ever capsized . Just a resin coat before everything is covered .

It's strange to see the efforts you are making to get everything level and square, knowing that she will spend most of her life under sail, and hence leaning at all sorts of angles. (This is not a criticism. Just an observation. I have confidence in your architectural and building skills).
It’s so everything lines up. And we only sail maybe 10% of the time. The rest is at anchor where it makes a difference. If the counter is off by a degree the water drains towards the hull from drying dishes rather than into the sink. These little things make a big difference in livability.
Such meticulous work, and I get why it's so important to do it that way.
So nice to finally see Uma getting her interior structure being fitted. Can't wait to see the results of your designs.
