Pretty sure anyone in a country where Nintendo operates can get one, or at least could, given that production has probably ended by now. Big N opened up dev accounts for indie developers enough that anyone with real interest could get a dev account, and through that account I believe it is/was possible to order a Panda Dev Kit. Price was around double the original 3DS MSRP if I remember correctly.
8:27 I remember playing this demo! It was in a Saturn (it's a german electronics store) on an Aqua Blue 3DS so there might be different looking "Panda" Units out there. But it probably was an entirely different unit. The Demo would automatically boot when you turn it off and on and the Home Button did nothing so I wasn't able to get out of the game. Curious me tried everything possible back then. They also had some other Demos like Pilotwings Resort and Mario Kart 7 later on. Mario Kart 7 was on a 3DS XL though. All systems worked the same way.
If we want more dev units surviving maybe don't show the serial number that will be connected to the original developer that got this 3DS (Its Nintendo, they will have that information and go after them). It adds almost nothing to the otherwise really good video.
Glad to see that you finally got yourself a 3DS Panda DevUnit Elliot. While I myself don't have this specific model, I do have one known as the Red-Dev Snake Unit or more commonly known to us as the New 3DS XL Dev Kit. At 4:30 you mentioned that you couldn't change the language of the Devunit and that's due to the region locking of the system. However, (and correct me if I'm wrong here) I believe this can be changed in the Config Menu under "Other Settings - Language" or "Menu Settings - Language". 3DS Development units also have 2 additional features used for testing, if you press X and Y together on the home menu, you can get a string of text to pop up that displays the systems Country and Language as well as the systems revision, date, and mode setting the system is currently in. Afterward, if you highlight any game of your choosing while the debug string is displayed and then hold B and Press X, you can cycle through the game's various banners that are displayed for different languages. The last feature can be found once again in the 3DS's config menu. you can set the console to boot up from a test menu rather than the regular home menu by going to either "Other Settings - menu" or "Menu Settings - menu" and then select it and press down on the d-pad to get "test menu", Press B 2 times to return to the initial menu screen and then power off the device. Once turned back on, you should now be able to boot into the test menu instead of the standard homemenu. You can change it back to the home menu afterward once you are done by doing the same steps and selecting the home menu from the config application but essentially this allows the developer to hop into the dev menu application or launch any games without having to wait for the HomeMenu itself to boot up. I hope this helps you.
I imagine the game isn’t booting because of the region locking the 3ds has and either the developer unit is set to Japan or it has its own region encoding.
Possibly, I've had mixed results. My japanese 3ds would sometimes show the cartridge and just say "this game card could not be read" or something like that, but some games don't even show up.
Actually, no. Dev carts are signed with a totally different key than retail. Even if he was using a Japanese cart or the incredibly rare region free cart Nintendo made for the Louvre museum, it still wouldn't boot.
Pressing X+Y toggles HOME Menu's region, language, creation date/time, revision information, and percentage bars used to measure application banners processing. The first bar indicates how much can be processed in a single frame; the second bar indicates CPU processing; the third bar indicates GPU.
Not being able to use the home menu button is actually a feature of demo games on the 3DS, I've got a 3DS kiosk display with some demo cartridges, and even in normal 3DSes, once you put a demo cartridge in, upon powering on it will immediately launch the game, and disable the home menu button so that you can't go into the 3DS' settings or home screen.
(3:59) I didn't notice this until watching the video 2 months later that the status bar was indicating the wireless connection mode as "StreetPass", when I thought it was the grey "Disabled". I'm assuming it'd show up as a regular Japanese region 3DS to other 3DS consoles. Original comment follows. (4:30) Japanese region 'J' firmware on the Wii, Wii U, DSi, and 3DS all have their UI language and country locked to Japanese and Japan respectively, and I don't think I'll ever know why. (6:29) …only to find some bugs or a few to note down and attempt to fix them the next business day (8:29) Likely before Nintendo came up with the name 'Super Mario 3D Land'. (9:22) I imagine there was a cover over the power button to prevent it from being pressed.

I always went with my mum everytime she went buying stuff there and than I directly went to those 3DS and played these demos. Sadly they were removed a few months before the release of the Switch...
@@jayr6854 How can you be so sure, unless you've worked with it in the past? A retail Japanese 3DS will do the same thing when trying to load PAL or US games. Since it plays DS games (which wasn't region locked), it more than likely DOES play retail 3DS games, so long as they're Japanese.
Cool stuff! I modded a DS Lite for a Christmas present in a similar colour scheme by pure chance. By the way, I'm sure the 3DS games are region locked, so the Japanese retail games may potentially work.
When I saw the ROM ID at 8:20, beginning with "CTR" I was expecting a some sort of Beta of Crash Team Racing... but oh well. Thanks for that insightful video !
Well, you could go back to the home menu by pressing the power button, and immediately releasing that when the screen goes black. When the “software has been closed” screen appears just press the home button or close and reopen the screen.
It's fixed now, but I'd recommend starting the music before you say the first letter, and covering up the whole 3ds and box when the serial number is shown
JFE doesn't really reveal anything, as is shows the localisation and type of console. Besides, the serial number could be seen in one of the menus, something the guy overlooked.
What a cool machine, years ago in the Spectrum world we had something called "Quill" which was a superb all in one development tool for making bespoke Speccy games. My youngest who doesn't work in the business has a degree in games development and occasionally does some indie voice acting for Steam games, she works in a hospital's operating theatre and has never looked back either.
My guess would be that the documentation for this device is accessible through Nintendo's dev account platform? Since I believe that's where you could order those from.
Deverlopers could flash a regions software to the unit, for instance if you had the software, you could flash the US system software to the unit. At least this is how my New 3DS XL Panda (SNAKE PANDA) works.
Oh hey. This is unrelated to this video, but a guy started making replacement screens for the Milton Bradley Microvision. He has backlit and conventional screens. You can buy them on eBay. I know that obscure handhelds are your thing, so I figured you'd like to check it out.
Hi The Retro Future, I wanted to give you some extra information about the PANDA development console and some other things in the video that hopefully interests you. At 5:34 you said about how the PANDA dev kit will not read a retail 3DS game. This is because when Nintendo made the 3DS’s SDK (Software Development Kit), it had the choice to sign games in 2 different ways, development build and retail build. PANDA development kits won’t run retail games because the retail games are signed using a different encryption key all together, which the PANDA tool doesn’t have in its sysNAND to compare it to. At 6:02 you showed the Partner-CTR development kit as well, which was re branded to the IS-SNAKE Development kit. The 3DS SDK would put an entire application into the dev tools RAM, so that when the tool was powered off, the game would be wiped from it. I believe this is so that if the development kit got leaked then people couldn’t use any developer 3DS tools if they were on it. At 8:19 you said that you didn’t know what CTR-P-CTAP was. Every 3DS application has this but essentially that’s just the product code. This product code is used to define what title it is, as well as what title to download off the Eshop after purchasing a game. At 9:12 you said that you can’t go back to the menu, and I believe that is because it’s opened via DevMenu. If the demo was installed as an application and was opened at the Home Screen, you would more than likely be able to close it without shutting the power off. Edit: Someone with a Panda development console just tested the CIAs I had and turns out they’re corrupted
I saw this seller on eBay who says they have a bunch of Nintendo dev kits and will be putting them up in the coming weeks, seems like it's your kind of thing :)
This is somewhat off topic, but has anyone ever decided to merge both halves of a DS Phat into something resembling a 2DS, so you don't have to worry about its fragile hinges anymore?
Fun fact: loads of homebrew scene on 3DS owes it's existence for these units existing on hands of people nintendo probably did not want holding them, as well as initially used software mainly 3ds package installers spread around being outright illegal copies of dev kit software which all have legit and likely open source versions these days. Still, many homebrew 3DS systems can run now same dev kit unique software and even act as one more or less with certain settings.
Huh would love a switch to use these colours on the hardware! Only the ACNH variation so far has looked cool to me .. and all the lite models look fine I guess. But THIS 3ds has STYLE
You're exactly right that these kits would have been used for demo purposes. You really need the connection to a PC to develop games for the 3DS. Nintendo's emulator from what I've heard was terribly slow and I don't know anyone who used it. I think the software on what you have is very similar to what's on the kits one would actually develop with, though. At least, it seems close to what I remember.
Thanks for the nice video! I have the dev menu application on the used 3DS I bought but was never sure what it is for (it has a different icon and doesn't say dev menu)

@@DarktheEagle because i have 3 panda units ?
Lmao when you try to act like your smart
@@DarktheEagle Acting smart won't bring you anywhere, dumbass
Hi, I'm from Mexico, I don't know English, but I like your videos, they're cool
The serial number can also be seen in the dev menu at 7:43 🙈
The videos about prototype consoles/games are really interesting. 👍
Why doesn't any RUclipsr take a clear picture of the text first and THEN run it through google translate? Instead they just use the live camera feed.
Have seen many of your videos recently, they are very interesting. Subscribed.
the things i would do to get my hands on one of these
I would LOVE to get one of these simply for the case swap. So cool looking.
I just bought some Nintendo ds lites and DSi’s for parts and repair from Sendico and it will be here on Tuesday so excited for it
I wouldn’t mind waking up early for school if there’s a new TRF video to watch!
What a cool machine, years ago in the Spectrum world we had something called "Quill" which was a superb all in one development tool for making bespoke Speccy games. My youngest who doesn't work in the business has a degree in games development and occasionally does some indie voice acting for Steam games, she works in a hospital's operating theatre and has never looked back either.
actually, the dev menu app is also been wildly used to install games if you choose to jailbreak/cfw your 3ds/
3:26 Ah yes my favorite console, the ɴɪɴᴛᴇɴᴅʀ𝟹ʙᴅs
...I think i remember seeing someone on the streetpass mii plaza, who had the dev menu listed as most played game.
"this is quite complex but also very simple"
The colours and gradients are just amazing
I still can't comprehend how you find so many of these rare systems in so little time.
To think this thing turns 10 years old soon...
My guess would be that the documentation for this device is accessible through Nintendo's dev account platform? Since I believe that's where you could order those from.
That's correct
I'm curious what the switch development kit is like, but Nintendo seems to protect that info
Mine is hacked since 2017 and i love it more
Same here men 😂😂😂😂
Also, I’m not subscribed to him he appears on my feed i have no idea why 🤨
@@chris3295 hes probably thirsty for money 😂😂😂😂
Deverlopers could flash a regions software to the unit, for instance if you had the software, you could flash the US system software to the unit. At least this is how my New 3DS XL Panda (SNAKE PANDA) works.
The serial is in the shot of the Cofig Menu on the top screen by the way
You are going to have to start a Nintendo museum by the end of all this. Great video as always!
Send this to the modding community for examination
Oh hey. This is unrelated to this video, but a guy started making replacement screens for the Milton Bradley Microvision. He has backlit and conventional screens. You can buy them on eBay. I know that obscure handhelds are your thing, so I figured you'd like to check it out.
Nintendo 3ds: boring
Nintendo 3ds panda: the best 😎
My 3DS can play retail games *and* run unsigned software from the SD card
You did that by hacking.
Hey! the 3ds isn't boring!
@@juangutierrez5400 Correct. That doesn't make it any less true though.
@@juangutierrez5400 so?
Elliot. At 7:19 you can see the serial number on the top screen
You can install the eshop via a japan eshop cia file I believe. You can also get games via a cia file aka 3DS rom.
Holy sh*t is beautiful!
It's going well, Elliot. Thank you for asking.
That seiko Ripley tho ;)
;)
Love the giugiaro chronograph eliot! love your vids my dude. keep it up!
Do you know where i can get so a Prototyp cartridge xD
Have 2 Panda one new xl one old xl
@@jayr6854 usually eBay. I own a blank one but yeah
The 3ds is one of my favorite console design i don't know why but i love it
I saw this seller on eBay who says they have a bunch of Nintendo dev kits and will be putting them up in the coming weeks, seems like it's your kind of thing :)
I've been tracking one of these down for years now. GG Elliott
with all these development kits, you would think Elliot is making his own retro future game 😉
Wow, that is beautiful unit!!! I wish I could afford one.
After so many years I noticed there was a dock for 3ds!
This is somewhat off topic, but has anyone ever decided to merge both halves of a DS Phat into something resembling a 2DS, so you don't have to worry about its fragile hinges anymore?
Very cool. I love the colors as well.
Its funny because next to this in my recommended was "making panda sound for minecraft" LOL
There’s gotta be a way to load your own home brew on there and/or roms:
This is such an awesome device, regardless!
Fun fact: loads of homebrew scene on 3DS owes it's existence for these units existing on hands of people nintendo probably did not want holding them, as well as initially used software mainly 3ds package installers spread around being outright illegal copies of dev kit software which all have legit and likely open source versions these days.
Still, many homebrew 3DS systems can run now same dev kit unique software and even act as one more or less with certain settings.
the official homebrew kit
the extdata tab is for your saves/dlc
Cool Video. What kind of Watch are you wearing?
I just replaced the shell and buttons on my GameBoy advance SP and I also got a Ez-flash omega. Now I’m thinking of putting an IPS screen on my dad‘s old GameBoy advance. Edit and of course I use your videos as a Guide.
