- Making holes in cylinders can be tough. How do you avoid weird lumps, bumps and other shading artifacts on a curved surface? This video shows 4 methods that will result in decent topology and a nice smooth surface.

Is it just me or it is just unnecessarily complicated to create holes in Blender?
Its the cost of good topology
It's easy, the tough part is making a clean topology by making holes

None of these methods are useful in real situations.
There are many applications. An example is when i was modeling an M4A1. I wanted the holes on the handguard, but ended up not adding them bc i didnt know how to. i.imgur.com/3P9STy5.png
cause u can have some pinches?
At 0:38, in Blender 4.1 it's no longer a checkbox but a different setting underneath the "Snap to" setting; Check the "Snap individual elements to: face project" instead of only "face" to get the same result.
THANK YOU
Unrelated rant, but I'm so fed up of youtube adding this thick video title on the top when pausing a video.... And no option to remove this useless stuff. Like to spare you the immense effort to go back into window mode the rare times you need to re-check the video title, they ruin the video itself... WTF is going on in their heads?
I am now downloading tutorial videos first and watch them later on VLC or else, in order to just see the menus on the top. Google interfaces, seriously....
I just spent my whole morning doing just that, this video would have been so useful 6 hours ago
Same!!
In the "alt+J" function you can also increase the angle in both shape and face options to get rid of those triangles, that way you don't have to selectem manually
I know another method:
When you don't know how to make a hole, you Punch the monitor.
Good work sir 🚩🙏🙏🇮🇳
I must admit, every one of these is easier than what I struggle with. :-)
You can also get a circle using a single vertex.
1. on edit mode go to vertex selection
2.Control+ shift + B to bevel vertices
3. Add as many segments as you need segments to have a circle
(Don't forget to apply scale before doing all of the above)
no, the mold will be broken.
Thank you so much sir it's really helpful tips please keep it up.
Very Nice! Thank you!!
Can you please post the file that you made? I've been trying for an hour and i can't get it to work.
Oh, the last one it´s magic :O
Best vid on youtube for making holes in curved surfaces, also really like the topology collection idea, that's OP
thx - as always really valuable content
Awesome use of Asset-Browser!
This is perfect. Thanks for another good explanation!
I just realised im not subscribed 😭
3:25 where can i download this asset file ?
Perfect ❤️
If you want you can use knife tool to

Amazing as always 👏👏👏
Yes! This is good.
Nice tips! Thank you
Love this tutorial 👌
Thank you for your videos
hes making cheese @ 5:40
Good video
Best video
Thank You
Have been busy with this for over more then 2 hours, starting over and over again. Not working correctly for me.
what am i missing? first method i press G and nope, no snapping of circle vertices whatsoever, it just activates move. i wanted to use that method instead of the others because it allows precise dimensions of the created hole. update: you have to be in the ortogonal view of the projection to apply it. duh. sorry. i am a noob. i bought the book, and will not post again until i am halfway through. promised.
last one is goated 🔥
How would you add an array of cylinders on a curved object while keeping each cylinder perpendicular to the surface?
For the longest time, I've been trying to make a concrete pipe interior. Specifically, a vertical cylinder shaft with a smaller perpendicular cylinder tunnel intersection. It always looked janky until today, with the help of method 2. Now I just need to learn how to properly unwrap it for texturing. Thank you for getting me closer to my goal.
I made the plane with holes by following instruction at 5:03 and it worked great. however I was unable to do anything with this model after; cut out a certain part, color etc
thank you man, I was trying to make holes in the supressor of my gun but was haaving a hard time doing, really helped me out man thx
3:30 anyone know how to do this? I had no idea you could save "swatches?" of geometry as an asset.
Good work
Precies wat ik nodig had!
I think you need to emphasise how important the position + scale of the circle is so that you can end up with quads.
Perfect material !!! Thank you i
the last one is very interesting. could be useful for a lot of things.
one thing that is missing in that video: geometry nodes!
Amazing! Thank you.
Thanks a lot! Really helpful tip
meanwhile i just use bool tool
I bought the book… it’s,like blender modelling bible. Thank you for making it.
Thank you!
I'm getting that e-Book as soon as I can afford it. If it's even close to all the tutorials you post on RUclips. I know I'll love it.
Thanks a lot! I’m sure you’ll like the book, I put (and continue to put) a lot of effort into it.
I need to watch this every day to remember it when I need it. Brilliant!
haha I understand!
Your are a beast
Thanks a lot!
This is gold! Thank you!
Thanks
Why wouldn’t you use booleans?
You could, but the topology could be a horrible mess you have to clean up
Please state what you're doing instead of listing hotkeys. I and many others use the industry standard bindings instead of the idiosyncratic Blender ones.
