This has been a great season, and it was very enjoyable to watch. That being said, the red zone offense is my biggest concern. In the playoffs and the conference championship game, you are gonna face teams with good offenses. You can't expect the defense to hold these teams 17 or 14 points.
Agreed. In my view, good red zone offense comes down to having a balanced attack. Teams that aren't balanced aren't consistent in short-yardage situations, so they generally stall out in the red zone. Oregon's offense has shown balance at times, but they've been streaky all year, with an unusual number of three-and-outs for an otherwise good offense.
Bought my ticket to the game at the beginning of the season when they went on sale. Started doing that a few years back when the Pac12 started having it in Vegas. Wish it was still in Vegas but I’ve never been to Indianapolis so 🤷🏻♂️.
I was insulted by multiple people for arguing with people who claimed that Oregon hadn't locked up their berth in the championship game. Good of the conference bureaucrats to finally admit that I was right all along, lol!
Watch you don't tear a labrum with all that self-backpatting. Too bad the B1G commish didn't just hire you to begin with. Coulda saved three days' work for all involved.
Offense I’m going Powers-Johnson and defense is gotta be Jevon holland or Troy dye (linebackers have been solid but his swap for 1 of em I think would put them to another gear)
It’s very hard to go undefeated. Oregon, last two opponents were coming off of their bye’s meanwhile, Oregon was playing their seventh against Maryland and their eighth against Wisconsin game in a row. Oregon is looking really good right now. To play after eight straight and stay undefeated and without any major season ending injuries? Incredible.
Spencer, I have an idea that starting in the big 10 championship DG has got to run a more 2022 Bo Nix offense. I think they’ve wanted to run 2023 Bo offense with him but his play style fits 22’ better bc he doesn’t see the field as good & is a good runner. With the post season it’s all on the table so he can be that true dual threat which will help deep shots as teams will have to spy his more consistent scrambles/designed runs.
What you're saying is that Will Stein should switch to Kenny Dillingham's offense after the Washington game, which is an obvious non-starter. I agree that Dillingham's truer commitment to the run game would probably suit Dillon Gabriel's skill set better than Stein's slice-and-dice horizontal attack, but that's a moot point now. Thankfully, Dan Lanning won't let Stein stray too far from his line of scrimmage obligations-despite the latter's evident aversion to establishing the run.
@ fair point that was Dillies offense in 22’ but I still think Will stein likes to call runs too as he did with Bucky & Jordan last year. From my eye lasts years line was better at run blocking & Bucky could make magic happen on any run too. Jordan and Whittington are more traditional backs & this is fine but unless blocking improves than a way Oregon could get more yards is call more designed runs like at Michigan & DG can scramble. Once we’re in the playoffs the goal is championship or bust so there’s no restrictions on his legs.
People talking about how they are holding their expectations and emotions for Oregon winning a national title makes sense. It is really hard to watch them not win it all when they have had their opportunities. I'm a huge Duck fan, but I was also a huge Red Sox fan as well (became less a baseball fan over the recent years for various reasons). I became a Sox fan during the 1975 World Series when I was a young kid in grade school. And watched them lose in what I would soon learn was literally an age-old curse. They would get you all hyped up and then rip your heart out. Names like Buckner and Dent became curse words. Heart break season after season after season. Then 2004 happened. Almost 30 years later, my team finally won it all after a magical ALCS versus their archrivals NY. And you know what? It was like all the pain and frustrations of those 30 years melted away. The Boston Red Sox were World Champions and the world kind of shifted for me. At that point it didn't matter if they never won again. Didn't hurt that they won in 2007, 2013, and 2018. So just wait Duck fans. It is going to happen. I've been following Duck football since the early 80's and experienced a ton of lows and highs. We will see our Ducks holding the trophy at some point as well, and everything will be okay.
The only way starters are sat or limited against Washington is if scoreboard security allows for it, meaning a three-possession lead by the 7:00 4Q mark or a four-possession lead by the 12:00 4Q mark would be necessary. Jordan James might be an exception, given the solid RB depth available. Personally, I don't see the margin getting out of hand like that, due to the rivalry factor and the consistent inconsistency of the Oregon offense. The Ducks are no juggernaut.
I’d bring back JPJ and Sewell if we could bring back o lineman from previous classes. Feeling decent about our chances in the B1G championship game, but I’d feel a lot better if Harper was 100% healthy and on the line and Burch was as well. The last two weeks definitely has me worried, but I believe in Coach Lanning and what him and the staff are able to scheme up. Interesting thing I heard yesterday was that the 5 seed would be a better place to land than taking the #1 seed due to your path to the semi. What are your thoughts Spencer? Would Oregon be better off playing the xtra game (at home mind you) or getting the first round bye but drawing better teams on the path to the Natty?
Yeah that clinching thing was weird. There were multiple media outlets last Friday saying that Oregon would clinch a berth to the conference championship game if they defeat Wisconsin. Then it was "not yet" after the win and then Tuesday they announced it. 🤷🤦
If they have this many problems in the big 10, trying to figure out The two teams for the championship imagine what’s gonna happen in the SEC if Texas A&M wins against Texas. It might be January before they figure out who gets into theirs!
I'm beginning to lean getting rid of conference championship games. With college football moving more towards an NFL type post season I think it makes sense. The advantage the NFL has is the division format with less teams so every team in the same division plays each other thus being able to crown division champs. Currently a team losing in the conference championship game could possibly knock you out of the playoffs which is kind of crazy. I do feel college football is heading in the right direction but still has some work to do.
Good points, but we don't know what the CFP's attitude will be toward conference championship game losers who are competitive. They might not punish well-fought losses that much, considering the SoS factor of playing one extra highly-ranked opponent.
Dave Illuli had been out since spring with a hurt foot. That means he wasn't able to get into game condition. He will be better able to play every week.
If we beat Washington and then Ohio state in the big10 chip, there’s a high chance we play Alabama in the rose bowl. Entertainment wise, how crazy of a game would that be??
Not Spencer, but no way Boettcher is NFL-caliber. He's a good college player, thanks mostly to his football IQ and scheme experience, but his lack of size and speed would be dealbreakers in the pros.
i think special teams has been absolutely incredible they have saved our ass 2x this year undoubtedly they are unspoken heroes this year for sure and they deserve they flowers
Swap out Ajani Cornelius for Penei Sewell and then kick Cornelius inside to one of the guard positions, presumably RG. On defense, exchange Jamaree Caldwell for Haloti Ngata.
Dillion is becoming the weak link on this team, after of course the terrible play calling.. He throws short, behind and gets frantic under pressure. Blitz him every two or three plays and you will beat Oregon. D backs play were he will throw the ball,/ behind and short / then they will get int's. if that trend by Dillion stays then Oregon will not go far.
No! Disagreee - it's Mariota, Gabriel, and then Nix. Nix was a deer in the headlights in the Pac-12 championship game. We KNOW he couldn't handle the pressure of big games which is why duck fans have their fingers crossed for his NFL career.
Uhhh ... no. Bo Nix is far beyond Dillon Gabriel in every conceivable aspect of the game. This "deer in the headlights" cliche is nonsense: Nix and Stein made critical adjustments and rallied brilliantly after the TEAM's awful start to that game, and they competed to the very end. Washington was an ever-so-slightly better team with more highly drafted NFL players than Oregon (check the 2024 NFL Draft results for yourself), and sometimes better teams win.
Yes we should feel good. First year in the BIG 10 and we go to the championship game. Win or lose. That is a statement.
You need Tez and Burch back to win Natl Title and Harper on O Line-2 weeks off-even if you lose in big 10 title gameand will actually get an easier draw in playoffs-Will have to play 8-9 winner in quarterfinals most likely SEC team-do not want to play them
