There is always something to do in the outdoors when the kiddos like bugs - I always made sure to take thier little bug "cages" with us on outings. A couple of years ago we made a DYI swallowtail butterfly house and I put it on my channel. :)
I LOVE ladybugs I bring some from school to home then I let them go at my near by trees and letting them crawling on my hand was fun first time I saw them I didn't like them crawl on my ✋ hand but my friends did then I got used to it

My son was born in Brooklyn, we moved to Durham, NC when he was almost 2 because we wanted him to be able to run around naked in real grass (not asphalt like the brooklyn playgrounds!) and climb trees, play with sticks and bugs! I know this is not an option for everyone, but we did it and he loved every minute. When he was 10 we moved back to NYC and now he's a scooter riding, independent kid who loves the museums, parks and good schools in NYC! Everytime we gardened in our front yard (NC) even though I LOVED earth worms, I would always scream every time I dug one up. Just my natural reaction to them!

Once I caught a grasshopper in a clear bucket. I put a screen on top of the bucket so he couldn't escape but could have air. Then I decided to take the screen off and............ PICKED UP THE GRASSHOPPER WITH MY FINGERS while putting dirt and shells and plants in the bucket. I put the bug back in and the screen back on. I walked over to my bff and showed her and I said "imma pick it up" so I took off the screen, reached in, and the grasshopper jumped on my friends face. We screamed but then started laughing. And now my story is told. Goodbye
a worm bin is a great way of composting foods and saving waste! It produces fertilizer and is super useful! That would be a great long-term project with kids.
As someone who as a kid frequently brought home caterpillars in my lunchbox I have to say parents who push past their fears and foster their kids' love of nature are the best! Props to you Elle, good work ☺️

Kids just love bugs! My mom remembers when I went to an animal exhibit and got to hold a bug. I came running back to her with this beetle the size of my hand, so exited to show her. She was... less than thrilled. xD

The crickets at the pet store usually are feeder crickets without the proper care. And those habitats are not the proper size for those living insects. Crickets need large bins to maintain a healthy life.
