    THANK YOU HRCC !!! I have been trying to get my IC705 working with WSJT-X. I could decode signals but transmit did not work. At first I thought it was the cable but was getting the "usb com" displayed on the rig. I tried everything including ordering a new USB cable that the dealers advertising says "Works with the 705" so I ordered it and on its way. Then last nite I came across this video and it was great as I was learning new features of the rig I had not used before......Then you had a segment on connecting with WSJT-X and to use FLRIG as WSJT-X does not yet have support for the 705. So I got up this morning, downloaded FLRIG and set it up per your demo and low and behold everything works.... many thanks and now a loyal subscriber..... Don - KW2AIR

    XFC is for receiving on your split transmit frequency. Usage: say you are in a pileup of a DX station, and he is working split and say "5 to 10 up", you set your second VFO 5 to 10 khz up from his frequency. But where to set it? Say your strategy is to "tail end" the last station that worked him so you will then know where his receiver is set. Press and hold the XFC button and tune your second VFO and if you are lucky you may hear the last station to work the DX. Leave your VFO there and release the XFC button and call the DX. Not as good as having two receivers , but since it is a one receiver rig, it is better than "guessing" where the DX is listening. Keep trying to figure out where the DX is listening within the 5 to 10 up window. 73 de KØUA

    Well Joshua, I'm ao glad that I found this video. We are both at the same moment in time.
    You learned all about this rig 2 years ago and you were very through in your experimentation video. I am now facing the same challenges but at a reduced cost.
    Iam looking to get into the field of HF,VHF,UHF.
    I have already brought a Kenwood nx5800 K2 for another private network which will eliminate the need for RUclips and all the other censorship platforms.
    I still need 2 more 5800's and 3 nx5300 hand helds ,1 scanner and 1 multiband radio .
    I was advised to get a Icom 7100 for its versatility but this 705 is wonderful with the touch screen waterfall. Sadly it only is 10 Watts max while the 7100 has 100 .
    You have shown the weakness of the 705 and it's strengths.
    What if Icom could fuse the 2 of them together and create a 100 watt unit with both full features? That would be an awesome unit .
    But it is what it is and so we must choose what is the best way to go.
    The 9700 is my next video to watch and learn .
    Thanks for your great video.

    There is a LOT of FT8 on 2m! Especially during contests. Horizontal antennas are the norm and cross polarization losses are steep... but a 2m horizontal loop takes little tower or attic space, small 2m beams look like TV antennas so you can get away with it in HOA's...

    • @HamRadioCrashCourse
      @HamRadioCrashCourse  3 года назад +1

      I think that will depend on your area really.

    • @MaryBrownForFreedom
      @MaryBrownForFreedom 3 года назад +1

      @@HamRadioCrashCourse A look at the contest results will show local activity. With a loop I could work stations out to 150 miles if they had a beam and that was on SSB, FT might double that depending on terrain. I know you guys have mountains in the way but contest results show a lot of activity in CA...

    What’s your opinion about making the 705 a mobile rig? With ability for easy removal to use in house or when doing POTA/SOTA. Basically an all-in-one rig for someone to use on the road, at the house, and when on the move.
    I only have a D74 and have been looking to get a mobile rig and an HF for the house. This seems like it could do both??? Wondering your thoughts to use as mobile.

    New Ham here, KJ7ZMO out of Montana. Studying for my General exam and am searching for a radio that fits what I would like it to do. Budget wise I a flexible but for my first radio I would like to get something that does all bands. I am enjoying using the FM stations here but want to use the HF frequencies as well as get into digital using the raspberry pi. I really like the Icom 7300. It can definitely do everything I would like it to plus from your other video I can see it can be taken mobile in a box. My question with regards to the Icom 705 is that if you take this mobile and have a 12V battery are you concerned with being able to reach out with only 10 watts?

      Ham Radio Crash Course
      No radio “needs” a tuner but for everything that’s inside and for the price it would’ve been a BIG positive if it had one. As you well know having a tuner installed and set to certain SWR threshold can save a radio from being damaged by High SWR caused by a faulty coax or antenna.. I’ll wait for Icom to have some sort of upgrade. But hey that’s my opinion.

      Ripping people off?

    • @Drewboo1968
      @Drewboo1968 3 года назад

      @@HamRadioCrashCourse Absolutely. I understand the transceivers being pricy, it is a limited market even worldwide, when compared to say a cell phone. But, and there is always a but. Gigaparts will sell me a battery for my FT2, the Yaesu SBR-14LI "High Capacity" 2200 mah job for 79 of my hard earned Dollars. Bridgecom will sell me a 3100 mah battery for my 878 UV- Plus for the princely sum of $29.99. So yes, there are definitely rip off battery prices. I will say the Yaesu battery is built a little better, not orders of magnitude though, and certainly not 2.6 times the money better. The Yaesu battery costs $4.94 per Watt hour. The Anytone battery costs $1.31 per Watt hour. The battery for my FT2 is 3.77 times more expensive per Watt hour. Makes my Anytone battery a bargain!.. Or is it? Could it be that one battery is reasonably and fairly priced for what it is, and the other is just priced to gouge. I would be shocked if the BOM was as high as ten bucks for either of them. I love both these HT's, but that doesn't mean one can't call BS on gouging when it happens.
