Was going to do this in July. Rode down to Portsmouth to catch the ferry. Ten miles from the coast was hit by a car. Luckly just cuts a bruises. Continued to the ferry and made it to the island. My mate drove us round most of the island instead. Gutted I didn't get to ride though.
Oh damn! Sorry to hear that, Andy but glad you weren't seriously injured! Hopefully it hasn't put you off trying again though, as it really is a cracking ride (and would no doubt be even better in the sun!).
Love the videos, great work. I was lucky enough to cycle this in August and we had a clear beautiful day and was 20 degrees. Would never have tried in that weather and you're right, a lumpy mistress she is !
I’m not jealous at all! 😂 Hopefully we’ll get back there one day to take her on again with some nicer weather. Thanks very much for the compliment too. I’m so glad you’re enjoying the videos. 👌🏻🌟
Chapeau to you boys! Great effort. I did the IOW Randonnee this year 110km & over 1700m of climbing - a fab, well-organised ride, highly recommend it...
Cheers Stuart and Chapeau to you too for completing the Randonee. I actually only learnt about that from the comments on this video, so we'll definitely be heading back at some point to take part in it proper. 👌 Thanks for taking the time to watch and comment too.
Dependant on where you are in Oz, I suspect you haven’t seen a rainy day for some time! 😂 It was a great adventure with the weather though. Glad I could show you a little piece of Hampshire on a typical British day though. 😉
I did that loop a few years ago after the festival. Some of the climbing there went on and on. It was far more hilly than i ever remembered! The red squire trail was also a delight. Ha.had to take the same small boat in cows too!
Yeh, it was incredibly hilly and they were just constant. I swear there’s not a flat piece of road on the island! 😂 We did the Red Squirrel trail with the kids a few days after this and have to agree that it was lovely with some great sights. Cheers for watching though, Marc. Appreciate you taking the time to comment too. 👌🏻
Great video, it brings back happy memories for me. I lived and worked on the IOW for some time and used to enjoy (?) a very similar loop of the Island before work in the early morning. Never did it in pouring rain though! 6am on a Summer's morning riding over the cliff top stretch of the Military Road was a delight. It was also an annual round the island charity walk which was even harder! That was in the 1970s/80s, much younger then, I think it would kill me now!
So good to hear it evoked so many great memories for you! It really is an incredible place. Doing it in the sun would have been lovely for the views, but I think I almost preferred the weather we had, simply for the added adventure! I reckon you could still give it a good go now though. 💪
Exactly our philosophy. At a certain point, you just have to embrace it and enjoy the absurdity of it! 😂 Thanks for watching and commenting, Darrin. 🌟💪🏻
Yeh, such a shame we didn’t get get to see more of the views! We were actually planning to ride up to the Needles too, but ended up abandoning that plan sadly!
Nicely done! Did a loop of the Island in late July, weather's not quite as bad as yours but the wind on Military Road was absolutely terrifying, one moment pushing us accross the road, next towards the cliff... No Strava records on that day!
Cheers buddy and thanks for watching. Yeh, that military road was a killer. That’s where we were getting drench in sea spray, then the double climb up and and over to Freshwater Bay! 🥵 Like you, we didn’t earn any KOMs that day. 😂
Great video Peter 👍 The hard, wet and under prepared rides are the ones you have the fondest memories of. It did look pretty brutal in parts but good to see you both kept smiling through it. Keep up the good work mate👍
Couldn’t agree more, Paddy. We always look back and laugh at our ‘worst’ rides. They make the lovely sunny days that more special too. 😂 Thanks as ever for watching and commenting, mate. 👌🏻
Cheers Ben. Really appreciate you taking the time to watch and comment. I watched the videos of you travelling to Switzerland with Francis a little while ago, but didn’t realise you had you’re own channel. Just subbed and looking forward to watching your videos. 👌🏻
Well done the 2 of you, yes the IoW is a lumpy mistress😁🚴 Check out the IoW Randonnee... If you can swing it with the lady folk it's a great day on the bike👍
Funnily enough, we only learnt about the Randonee after this ride… I mentioned we did no preparation, didn’t I? 😂 Would definitely love to head back and take part in that one day! 👌🏻
That climb around 15 mins came right at the end of the ride for me when I did the IOW Randonee. Found most of the ride quite easy but that almost killed me 😅😅
Blimey awesome effort both of you. Bananas and electrolytes are good to avoid cramping 🙌🏻 (well they work for me, only had cramp once but it was because it was a really cold winters evening)
Thanks Geraldine, yeh this was a tough one! Mainly due to me completely underestimating the elevation! D'oh! I'll put bananas on my list though. I'm willing to try anything to avoid the dreaded cramps! 😂
I don’t think I’ll ever complain about Essex being flat again, Andrew! 😂 Hope you had a great ride or two in Dorset. Id love to plot a few routes along the Jurassic cost myself. Thanks so much for watching and commenting. 💪🏻🌟
Genuinely was the worst cramp I’d ever felt! The video doesn’t show the half of it. I couldn’t even lift my leg off the bike, so Jimmy had to drag me off of it! It went on forever! 😖
😂 Cheers Terry. I can confirm that there was plenty of local craft beer sampling after this ride! Appreciate you taking the time to watch an comment. 🦾
I live just over the water in Fareham; gonna nip over and make this my longest ride to date weekend after the Great North Run (also, that's the Shields ferry you were referring to, from my home town of Jarrow!). Think I need sectioning 🤣🙈
Jimmy is an avid runner too (in one of my previous vlogs, we all ride 30 miles to Cambridge and then he does the Cambridge half! 🤪). He loves a good challenge to see how far you can push yourself and, subsequently, I usually get dragged along for the ride. Can’t say I enjoy it at the time, but road cycling has always been ‘type 2’ fun! 😂 Best of luck with both the ride and run though. Not being a runner myself, I can’t answer for doing 13 miles through Toon but that Isle of Wight loop will definitely be an achievement. 👌🏻 And yes, the Shields ferry! That was it. 😉
@@petertreadway If you think 13 through Toon is bad, the Ryde 10 has us run *up* those bast*rd hills... Last (ONLY!) time I did it, a Ryde Harrier won the course in under an hour. Pervert.
To be honest, Lincoln, we probably ended up wetter than the kids did in the pool anyway! 😂 It was a great day though, despite the struggle! 😖😂 Thanks for taking the tube to watch and comment too. 🌟💪🏻
I live. On the island and cycle it. Love the place for cycling. Only go around it maybe twice a year. Fancy another challenge lads. Do coast to coast in a day. 150 miles and 4500 meters of climbing Well done and a great video
Cheers Gavin, first thing to say is that I’m very jealous that you live on the island and get to ride it any time you want! It was an absolutely incredible ride! We have talked about doing a coast to coast too, so watch this space as we’ll hopefully get a chance to do one soon. 👌🏻
I live here ,Shame you missed some great gravel tracks ,when I was training for LEJOG I went to round the island once a day but nothing prepared me for Cornwall lol . ...I've had cramp that actually ripped a muscle & vien ..that hurt .
Yeh, I was gutted to have missed the gravel, but given the weather, it would likely have been a mud-fest anyway! 😂 As for Cornwall, I know all too well from Dave Noakes videos how lumpy that can be! 🥵. Don’t think I fancy pulling a muscle ripping cramp though!!! 😬
Your best riding video yet Pete, I enjoyed seeing you suffer 😂 actually those light red hills are a piece of piss, wait till you see those dark red burgandy ones like I did last week in Lake District, the sense of absolute dread is second to none! Still, at the end of such rides the buzz of achievement is amazing and when you get back to your relatively flat home turf you will feel absolutely bullet proof!
Cheers Neil. Glad you got a sense of Schadenfreude from the video. 😂 You’re right though. It was a great feeling when we got back and Jimmy and I are still talking about individual climbs that killed us! As for the Lake District, Jimmy and I are there in a few weeks for a triathlon, so I’ll likely be sampling those burgundy hills myself then! 🥵 Cheers for watching and really glad you enjoyed the video though. Really appreciate the comment too. 💪🏻🌟
