Hi Peter! I just love your videos. You inspired me to build a new-old bike. I've used parts of my old road bike that had the frame with a crack after an ugly fall in August 2023. I also copied your colours (black frame, red bar tape, red saddle, red cables and bottle cages). The main difference is that mine is a v-brake bike with old aluminium wheels. Total cost around 400 €!!! Oh! And I've also created a very modest RUclips channel to show the process (using my iPhone camera to film it, nothing to do with your amazing production). I'm having fun building it! Thank you for your inspiration!
Scotch Bright, preferably red/fine + IPA works for me if the rotors/rims are bad, rarely do I have to remove them to do it. And although it won't do much for rotors, neat washing up liquid on -the wife's- an old toothbrush works well for Alu' rims (scrub, rinse and repeat until all the "black" is gone). No exp' with carbon rim wheels, but I just ordered some, so suggestions are welcome!
I had a noisy brake for a while, probably a sticky piston as it kept squealing after the lever was released. I just kept using it and eventually it went away
Was it a cable or hydraulic caliper? I had similar with a cable actuated disc brake and it turned out to be the cable sticking inside the housing, as water had got in and rusted the metal structure! 🤦🏻♂️ Never had a problem since swapping to hydro brakes though. 👌🏻
@@petertreadway older ultegra 8000 hydraulic, about 4 years of use on it. I think it's more happy being ridden on more hills :)
Excited for Tested Tuesday! Your insights are always very well thought out.
Thanks so much, I really appreciate that. These videos won’t be every Tuesday, but just as and when I get new products to test. 👌🏻
My chain came off at over 70kph on my first ever Audax as well. I was frantically trying to shift it back on while also not wanting to slow down or stop because who wants to waste a good downhill?
Wow! You're lucky it didn't get sucked up in to the derailleur at that speed! You're right about not wanting to waste speed though! 🤣
Watched mtbconversions , you have inspired me to do a cheap mountain bike gravel bike build 😂
Yes! Love it, Charlie! I’m so glad I’ve given you the motivation to give it a go yourself. I’d love to see it when it’s done, so feel free to drop me a line on IG. 👌🏻
@petertreadway will do dude , I sent over that chilterns route, hopfully i sent it to the right person 🤣 will keep you posted on the progress 🤟
Looks like a good alternative to the Varia, think I will hold on to see if they release a version with a camera included.
Yeh, a camera would be a good addition, especially at an affordable price point. I currently use the Cycliq front and rear cameras and even in the Christmas sale they cost over £400! A cheaper alternative would be great then. 👌🏻
I just use my ears and eyes and neck muscles,I trust them the most, never had any trouble with them.A mirror can work well too.
There’s no substitute for performing a lifesaver check before taking any manoeuvre, but this can be a great early indicator when you’re just riding a long a straight road and can’t hear what’s coming up behind you.
I use a Magene. It’s great. As another commenter said, the constant beeping of the head unit can be annoying on busy roads. I turned my wahoo’s audio alerts off for the radar. I have found they tend to use Doppler radars and only detect relative movement. So in slow traffic or when a car will sit on your rear it can’t detect anything. But I see in a reply you said this one is different. I would say - do NOT think any radar light is a replacement for looking over your shoulder and listening out with your ears. It’s an addition not a replacement.
I like Magene products, as they do some similarly great quality bits of kits and really affordable prices. This is definitely not meant as a replacement for a lifesaver check over your shoulder before turning, but it’s a great pre-warning that something you might not be able to hear is coming up behind you. 👌🏻
I am mainly left footed a lot stronger than my right foot,so I unclip my right foot.
Presumably so you can push down on the pedal with your left foot when you take off again? Mayes sense. 👌🏻
Better to do review video in shed
I’m not sure I understand… ?
@petertreadway prefer your videos when you do a build or review when not cycling, just my 2 cents
@johnnyboy4711 ahhh, gotcha. Well, I have a build video coming up in a few weeks, so hopefully that’ll be more up your street. 👌🏻
@@petertreadwayI'm truly amazed how you can concentrate on talking to the camera while cycling! 😄
Please don't let it stop you looking over your shoulder. Sometimes tech has a moment off don't ya know. Good vid 👍🏼
Yeh, valid point. I still make sure to do a ‘lifesaver’ check over my shoulder before performing any manoeuvre. 👌🏻
I don't get why this would ever be needed.. If it's close you will hear it, if it's behind you then you have no control over it anyway. What are you actually meant to do with that data? It's like the UK road signs for large rocks near cliffs haha😂
Even travelling at a modest 13mph and the wind noise that generates, it’s very often difficult to hear a car behind you right up until they accelerate to overtake. This radar light can detect cars up to 160 metres behind you and also shows you how fast they’re approaching. I can’t envisage a situation as a cyclist where it isn’t useful to be given a heads up that a 2 tonne metal box is hurtling towards you. Genuine question: would you drive a car without any mirrors?
What do you do in a situation like this? Does everyone move in a line to the side of the road to let the bike pass? Wouldn't that be more pain than just always riding on the side of the road, or are there not that many cars?
@@rayzecorwe generally ride through quiet country lanes, so we don’t get too many cars to deal with. We ride two abreast chatting most of the time though, so if a car comes up behind us, we’ll move over in to single file to let it passed if safe to do so. We actually seem to be quite lucky around here though and most drivers are courteous and patient enough to wait until the road widens enough to overtake at a distance.
Good point. How do you feel about one of those wee mirrors on the end of your drop bar? Cheap, and no batteries to charge.
@ Personally I would much rather prefer a mirror
Hi Peter, I’m a lone cyclist ( by choice) when I started a few years ago my aim was just to cycle 5 miles or so around our local countryside on my brand new £120 bike !!! As the years went by I bought a better bike and got more ambitious, converting an old Citroen Picasso to store my bike and paraphernalia permanently, I’ve bored you in the past with my achievements ( Great Dun Fell, tour of Cornwall etc) I’m thinking of maybe reaching out to people who haven’t cycled in years to join me for a ride , with the aim of giving them confidence to then go out and do it for themselves, how do you think I could start something like that, I’m not great with computers etc, I would appreciate your advice ( as always) all the best 👍
That sounds like an absolutely wonderful idea, Paul. I love that. I would initially start by maybe posting in any local facebook groups for your area and surrounding. I recall a guy doing that near me a few years ago, as he wanted to get a group ride going at the weekend. Otherwise, do you have a local community magazine? That’s the sort of thing they love to print, to try and get people out exercising and exploring the area. I love how you’re wanting to give back now you’ve got so much from cycling though. Chapeau that man. 🧢
Have been using the Varia for 3 years and never ride without it. If i fidnt own one then id certainly be going for this, a cracking price point and great review 👍
Cheers Darren, glad you enjoyed the video. Yeh, for the price, this thing is a cracking bit of kit. It’s been on every ride with me since getting it. 👌🏻
Works with IGP BSC300?
I’m fairly certain the BSC300 has radar capability, as it works with their own radar light, so this should pair with it also. 👌🏻
One thing about radar is they are not very useful in moderate to heavy traffic as they are triggered constantly but hopefully a rider would be more acute to that situation and not rely on the radar in that situation. Another is that a radar will only track when a vehicle is moving in relation to it. IOW the radar will not detect a vehicle if the vehicle is traveling at the same speed as the rider. Even with those 2 issues I don't ride without mine (the Magene version) and I do like the side view visibility of the Cycplus model. I think all radars have the accelerometer feature. Good video, Thank you for posting!
Hey Joe, thanks for the comment. Interesting you mention about radar not picking up if a car is travelling the same speed, as this has picked up my riding buddies (sat 10-15 metres behind me) at points, even though they’re moving at the same speed. At first I thought it was another car detection, but then realised the white doesn’t moving towards the top of the screen and looked over my shoulder to see that it was in fact just my mates. I’m sure I also recall it keep tabs on a car that was sat behind us at the same speed for a while on a narrow, winding road but can’t fully recall. I’ll defo keep an eye on that next time I’m out though and report back. 👌🏻
@@petertreadway Maybe the Cycplus has a more sophisticated radar than my Magene since it doesn't see vehicles at the same speed and it very rarely sees a solo rider behind me, which I think is a good thing for false alarms. Do let us know if you have a chance
@@petertreadwaythat’s interesting. The Garmin and Magene use Doppler radars, which means they are looking for relative movement.
Yeah I had to turn off audio alerts on my wahoo as I ride on busy roads and the bloody constant beeping was very annoying.
I ride in traffic filled roads l where no one respects speed and distance limits. A radar would just increase my stress level even more.😅 Besides, the battery of my computer would drain even faster. 😂
Yeh, on busy roads, this might go off quite a bit but it could be a lifesaver once you turn off the bigger city roads on to the narrow side streets. 👌🏻
For the price it’s fantastic testing it myself and I like the look of it better than my varia 😊 great review mate
Cheers buddy. It’s a great little bit of kit, isn’t it. The price makes it almost a no brainer. Looking forward to your review. 👌🏻
What is your microphone?
It’s just the onboard mic built in to the GoPro Hero 9, although I do have a foam wind slayer over the camera, to cut out wind noise.
I wouldn’t ride without my Varia, but that unit does look great value. 👍
For the price and what you get, Steve, it’s a cracking little bit of kit. Like you, I never go out without it now. 👌🏻
How long does the battery last?
36 hours without the light, 25 hours in flashing mode. Battery power for days (literally!) 😂
I love my Varia though it was pricey. Do you find the L7 is sometimes triggered by other riders behind you?
Yes, but Cycplus bill that as a feature. In fairness, it’s easy enough to decipher whether it’s a car or a bike, by how fast the white dot is moving.
Garmin Varia also detects if there's another bike approaching. And the speed tells you whether it's a car or a bike
Have you done a side by side test with Garmin etc. to see how it really stacks up, I would not buy it until I see that even thought its cheaper.
I haven’t, but if this ever reaches the eyes of Garmin, then I’d be more than happy for them to send me one to compare. 😂 For now though, this does everything I need a radar light to do. It’s a bright light that immediately tells me when there is a car (or multiple cars in fact) coming up from a not inconsiderable distance behind me. For the price, that’s good enough for me. 👌🏻
GP Lama should get onto that!
Looks like a much better option than spending twice as much for the Garmin option 😂 great review mate
Cheers mate. Yeh, as I say, I do like Garmin products but you can’t really argue with the price of this! 👌🏻
I would also add knowing how to rest. A lot of people I ride with will completely stop pedalling on the smallest of downhills, then when they have to go back up a hill, they're carrying zero momentum and will have to struggle to go up the hill.
My favourite comment when taking on a descent immediately before a climb is ‘POWER’! 😂
UK..... I think..... Erm..... Maybe😮
A very dull comment, Paul! 😉
I was going to watch until the end but it was too dull 😂 ONLY JOKING!!!! I am disappointed by the lack of bananas though. Male 53, love a chat about nonsense, unclips on the left first except when I forget.
😂 Gutted I didn’t have any bananas with me on this ride. If only I could have use Africa by Toto as the background music too! 😂
It helps to stop at nice food/beverage stops. Something to look forward to while riding!
Absolutely. Can be a huge mental boost having something to aim for too. 👌🏻
I unclip on the left but it's nothing to do with the kerb as such. Ever since I was a kid I've preferred to put my left foot down; I think because I'm right-legged and prefer to push off with my dominant leg. So it makes sense that would be the one that stays clipped in. It's advantageous though, I don't deny it. Regardless of there being a kerb or not, I'm not standing out into the traffic, and generally leaning away from the road. If I fall over, it's more likely to be out of traffic. I only had one "clipless moment" - back in 1985 when I got cleats and toe straps for the first time. When I sopped at the lights, I tried to get my foot out but forgot I was strapped in. Keeled over - on to the footway. Cue embarrassment, and I've never forgotten to undo my straps or unclip since
The dominant leg argument makes sense actually. I’ll have to investigate whether my riding buddies are right or left leg dominant. 👌🏻
How on earth do you manage to get back on the bike and ride after a fry-up like that? I can see eating it afterwards, but not during!
Lots of practice! 😂
Right-side as I’m left-handed, no other reason methinks!
Trouble is, a number of my riding buddies are right handed, but unclip on the left… so who knows! 😂
@ I noticed yesterday that on the indoor I actually go left…..otherwise I hit the wall 😁
That would be a reason to unclip one side as opposed to the other! 😂
@@petertreadway bike skills 😅
I've said this before on another channel, I cannot see the need for disc brakes of any kind on a bike, why is necessary? I use V brakes and find them at times frighteningly effective 😊
While I can well understand some people’s love of Ron brakes, there is no denying that discs are stronger and more effective. However, if run brakes are what you prefer, then more power to you. 👌🏻
Mwhuahahahahaha say all the MtB'ers on gravel bikes... 🚴♂️
😂
I'm a London commuter who clips out on the right. I'm also right foot dominant so it doesn't seem to make much sense. I suspect I have better small motor control in my dominant foot so have always erred towards it when clipping back in...
Interesting thought regards small motor control on the right. There could be something in that.
If you need to perch on a kerb at traffic lights, your saddle is too high.
Getting technical, it really all depends on your BB height and crank length. That aside, while I can reach down to the floor while sat on my saddle, it’s much more comfortable to place my foot on a raised surface.
Unclip on the left and always mount from the left; anything else just feels wrong. I was taught this during my motorcycle test: if you slip or overbalance, you fall away from the traffic, not into it.
Except that you will always fall towards the side that is clipped in
Makes sense to unclip on the left, where you ride on the left, but I can’t figure out why others do differently!
Hi Pete, I am a "UK" left foot unclipper, I commute in Birmingham and use my left foot on the kerb🤓
That makes sense, Mike. I’m no closer to figuring out why others unclip on the other side though. 😂
What did you have for breakie though..?
A very tasty full English, washed down with a pot of tea! 😋👌🏻
I used to unclip by crashing 😮 I changed to flats after my last crash 'clipped in' resulted in 3 broken ribs and concussion 😂😂😂. Now I just have shins full of scars from the pins on my flats 🙃
It’s all just fun, fun, fun with you mate, isn’t it? 😂
@@petertreadway it's not a ride without a crash or some kind of 'incident' 🤣🤣
@GiveItaGo I’ll take your word for that, mate! 😂
@petertreadway well, if you come over in the summer, you'll find out 🤣🤣🤣
Hi, Peter! You've motivated me to try and build my own bike, so I have specced a gravel bike on AliExpress. My question to you is, where do you get the torque specs from?
Hey Daniel, great to hear that! Best of luck with your build. Regards torque specs, the parts will most usually have them printed on them. If not though, I generally go for 5-6Nm for anything to do with the stem/bars, as well as thru axles. The seat post and saddle are around 10-12Nm though. 👌🏻
@@petertreadway Got it, thanks :)
I clip on the left, UK style
Same as me, Alistair. 👌🏻
Left side first. I live in the US. So curbside influence doesn’t hold up in this case. But here’s (possibly) a weird twist, I unclip my left foot by turning my heel inward rather than out. Don’t know why. Don’t know when I began this practice. But I’ve been using clipless since 1982/3 using Looks. Right foot? Heel out like one would expect.
That’s muddied the waters even more, James! Inward unclipping… I’ve got a new topic to demystify now! 😂
Hi Peter, I've always unclipped my left, never because it's curbside, but purely so my stronger foot is left in the pedal to start off, although this has always been done unconsciously. However,, I am a complete contradiction as when I used to skateboard, my right was on the board with my left pushing me along. Like a said a complete contradiction, go figure.
It’s all very confusing, Lewis! I’m still no closer to figuring it out! 😂
I live in Japan (people drive on the left like in the UK). I was taught to unclip on the left for safety reasons (as others have said). I ride my cleats into the ground and so left foot cleat looks like absolute rubbish and the right foot cleat is pristine 🙂
Unclipping on the left makes sense for people riding on the left. I’m intrigued as to why others might unclip on the right then.
Clip out woth the left so you dint get your leg crushed by a bus or any other vehicles 👍
That makes sense, Nathan. So intriguing why others naturally unclip on the other side then!
The dial on the crank is the pre-load adjuster (like SRAM) but you have to get the correct spacers installed behind the BB that correspond to the shell width, the dealer's manual for it is DM-LAFC001-00-ENG[DOT]pdf Usually for an MTB* BSA type BB It's: 3x2.5mm spacers, one on the NDS and 2 on the DS for a 68mm shell. 1x2.5mm spacer on the DS for a 73mm shell. The only anomaly (that I know of) is Shimano's own BB-UR400 that's a single 2.5mm on the DS for a 68mm shell and is not compatible with a 73mm (because "standards") If he has a Shinano Road specific BB in there (1mm wider each side) there is no offal combo, but a 2.5 on the drive side usually does the trick without any noticeable imbalance, or you can get 1.5mm spacers if you want to get it spot on. *Some after market BSA BB's are often MTB standard, even when they are marketed as "Road" it's not normally an issue with HollowTech, but that's something to be aware of with this type of pre-load.
Cheers for that. Mark did end up finding the spacers in the packaging (just before he was a bout to throw it, thankfully! 🤣). 👍
Unclipping? The correct side of course....the right 😁
Sounds like fighting talk, Brian! 🤣
