Interesting. I once had an Indian neighbor and they had made curry chicken and brought me some, which I devoured with delight. A day or so later, the gentleman asked if we’d (my wife and I) like to join them for a curry dinner. My wife is the most bland eater, pretty much a meat and taters kinda gal, so without thinking I replied “she wouldn’t eat it”, which she wouldn’t have, but I obviously really insulted him. He didn’t speak to me for days. Finally, I went and explained further my wife’s culinary limitations, and he seemed to understand. I told him however that any leftovers from their table would be welcomed in my belly, and he did bring me some delightfully spicy stuff from time to time.

They are funny - and still charming - when wasted. Incredible speaking voices. These guys knew they would somehow avoid “9 to 5 lives” when they were 12. There is usually a price to pay though; like Burton passing aways in his 50s. Its amazing O’Toole and Harris made it into old age.

I have no idea how a director or other actors could have worked with him, he's so spacey..and how he was able to give such great performances role after role. Bogles the mind.
He was actually very easy to work with. Had all the skills and the memory. Most of all he was a pretty brilliant guy just a lot more fun, loving and realistic than those that like to let you know they’re an egg head every five minutes. There were plenty of interviews and other things where he talks seriously about his work on stage, and in films. Like anybody occasionally on a workday he was not ready for work or poorly prepped but through it all, they were no stories of him being a pompous brat, constantly spouting horseshit political views, or a perpetual no-show like the jackasses in Hollywood today. Take a look at his filmed work you can see the efforts made. Nobody threw him out of a Shakespeare production either. He excelled at what he did. If you don’t miss him, then there’s no one on screen or stage worth missing.
Okay, so a three minute bit featuring the greatest talk show host ever and one of the greatest actors & storytellers of all time. The story here is simple enough, with quite a straightforward pay off, but America and its oh-so-tight corsets. Can't even allow a word like pissed, which is what I assume Peter said.

I saw all these shows. O'toole came on drunk. then a few months later carson did the big explanation and o'toole came out drunk AGAIN. then carson did his patented stare into the camera, like he was taking you into his confidence and saying, "can you believe this?" this show happened a few months after all that and he finally came out sober. all pretty harmless and funny.
I was born 11 days before this interview in Galway city. Peter was from Leeds in the UK, but his family were from Connamara, County Galway, Ireland, he spent many years floating in and out of Western Ireland, like the Director John Huston, who lived in Craughwell, Co. Galway. Every major Hollywood star back in the day, had to stop at Shannon Airport to refuel, literally, the drinking sessions. Galway city is 1 hour drive North. A lot of Hollywood private jets still stop to refuel there, a friend met Tom Hanks last year, when Tom was on the way back from a family holiday in Greece

Wow. Such an elegant way of saying “I was soused.”
God Johnny's voice is like silk 😍
Lawrence of Arabia and Lord Jim make me fall in love whith him, so adorable man... He was my first love at 13 years
I have no idea how a director or other actors could have worked with him, he's so spacey..and how he was able to give such great performances role after role. Bogles the mind.
I doubt he took to direction. A smart director would do well to just let him go and do what he does best! And, enjoy the ride!
He was ALWAYS bombed. ... He's HAMMERED in this appearance.
My favourite actor..
Peter, Peter, Peter, I had such a crush on him growing up.
I LOVED PETER!
so true man, i can't beleive he's 46, wow
Okay, so a three minute bit featuring the greatest talk show host ever and one of the greatest actors & storytellers of all time. The story here is simple enough, with quite a straightforward pay off, but America and its oh-so-tight corsets. Can't even allow a word like pissed, which is what I assume Peter said.
Yes... but we can also say fanny without batting an eye. 😈😇😘
Fanny means something quite different in the uk than it does in the usa
Carson at his best, the perfect midwestern NY kindness, meets London's gentleman leading actor, who happens to drink. Both men come off better for it, lovely spot.
@galesayers Did you by any chance hear of his iconic role in the iconic film 'Lawrence of Arabia'? How in the world could anyone omit that? His beautifully handsome face and his portrayal (he definitely should have won Best Actor; everyone thinks he did anyway). Heavens, who can ever forget that?
He was very ill in the mid '70's. He is a legend, one of the greatest actors ever. I love you Peter; always have. Bless you for portrayal(s); especially of LOA. Perfection.
Peter O'Toole one of G"B greatest Queens, and a great actor also.
"It was a compound both of your truth, and mine" If that doesn't sum up life just perfectly...
Also, on an unrelated note; take a shot every time Carson says "bombed out of your gourd" and you'll end up, well, bombed out of your gourd...
I am so, so glad that there is so, so much documentation of how good Carson was, compared to all of his successors.
Just love him he’s an enigma end of
r.i.p peter o toole
this is fantastic
Oh, how I miss them both.
Peter O'Toole was Fantastic wow !!!
Peter fucking O'Toole bloody amazing
6 out of 7 days of the week he was drunk but who cares, he was a nice guy to all of us!👍👍👍
My favourie Irishman and my favoutie American together!
"...and it coincided with cocktail hour. And one... doesn't want to be discourteous." :D
yes please, post more of O'toole on Johnny if u have it.
Grace above all.......Love him
You can tell he is hyper sensetive...great actor...full of charisma
All the people here commenting he looks like this or he looks like that...... look in the mirror dummies , Peter otoole loved life to the fullest. What's your excuse?
Roland Deschain ain’t gotta a mirror!
People choose to look the way they do. Mr O'Toole, with the benefit of Hollywood hair, makeup, wardrobe, looks like hell.
"Living life to it's fullest" ... I guess that's code for abusing yourself right up to the edge of death.
Nothing honorable or enviable about that.
I can't find that first appearance of O'Toole on Johnny Carson's show on RUclips anymore. Looks like they've removed it.
I hope when I die my heart is filled with Peter and Richard""They both are so close to my soul and heaven is just a funny place with them there!!!Cbono
I learn something every day, I had often referred to the difficulty in expressing sarcasm on the net and didn't know of Poe's Law. From now on I will use the accepted sideways smile, most likely to no effect whatever. ;-)
bellissimo ed affascinante
Heh -- they bleeped the word "pissed," even though in British vernacular that just means "drunk" -- it's not the [mild] obscenity it is here.
Thanks for the etymological illumination
