It's a game where you need multiple players for. Well in typical barotrauma fashion we died before we even left port by blowing up the nuclear reactor cause our doctor cranked the output to 100%. It was hilarious.

You asked for some Barotrauma lore so here it is :
In the (kinda) near future humanity has sent colonists on one of Jupiter's Moons, Europa; but after some time, all contact with Earth was lost and the Europan colonists were left to fend for themselves. Since Europa has no land, only an ocean covered in a thick layer of ice, submarines are the only mode of transportation but even they aren't safe from the dangerous Europan wildlife.
In game, you play as members of a submarine crew trying to survive and make some profit by taking missions from different factions (transport some stuff, kill some beasts, explore some alien ruins, etc . . .).
The deeper you go in Europa's ocean the more dangerous it becomes until in the end you reach the Eye and a big alien waiting for you there, I haven't actually finished a campaign yet so I couldn't tell you exactly what happens in the end but my guess is that the alien is the cause of the loss of contact with Earth and when you kill it that problem gets resolved, but as I said, I don't know for sure.

Spoilers for the end of the game, though it is also theoretical talk. View more at your risk
You don't actually restore contact, to my knowledge, but what you do stop is the Jovian radiation. Radiation is pelting Europa, forcing people into the ocean (and if you play with the jobian radiation turned on, slowly pushing further into the ocean, forcing outposts closer to the surface to be abandoned), and killing Jove stops this. It is uncertain if your sub lives to tell the tale or not, as it is implied you never contacted the last outpost that let you close to the Eye after this, but it is unclear as to your fate so you could be anywhere and in any status.

Barotrauma definitely fits its name as a trauma-sim. It's biggest challenge isn't the game, but staving off the panic as things go wrong. If you and your crew keep cool and understand what you're up against, it's pretty safe. But when things start going wrong, they can cascade pretty hard. For example, you can go from a challenging but fun gunfight against a group of small alien beasties, only for several of them to lodge themselves against the hull where your big exterior guns can't shoot them, and chew their way inside. That's an "oh crap" situation, the kind that ends with half the crew eaten, and the sub sinking.
So the cardinal rules are staying cool, knowing the enemy, and being prepared.
I think there's a saying that goes "a liter of sweat now is better than a liter of blood later"?
A lot of videos on Barotrauma showcase what happens when you don't. It's fun, mind you, but a submarine and crew working like clockwork and breezing through horrifying monsters like they're on a 9-5 can also be very neat.
For the zany fun videos, I'd say watch Rubix, Starcat, Tomato Gaming and Chrbrg. For the serious kind, my go to is Aggro Cucumber.

Barotrauma is very fun with other people, i started playing it with a friend and we had a blast on our first playthroughs. We died to ourselves more than we did to aliens, either through drug overdose or acts of (sometimes) accidental sabotage (placing several explosive charges throughout the submarine and wiring them to a random button).

A barotrauma veteran here. Let i tell you some lore.
    (SPOILER ALERT)
So, like many people already told you, events take place on Jupiter's moon Europa, humanity didn't colonize for nothing, the reason is strange anomaly "Eye of Europe" - a gravitational Earth like field under ice of this moon. Humans try to explore the anomaly, but it was difficult due to the very dangerous environment with equally dangerous living creatures, thats makes all mission difficult. But it is also important that people found there signs of another civilization, alien ruins. When the connection with the Earth was lost, people were more concerned with survival than exploration. That’s why there are quite a few mentions about the Eye of Europe. We players, can play as we want, but according to the idea of the game, we are enthusiasts who want to find out for ourselves what this “Eye of Europe” is.
    (HEAVY SPOILER)
At the end of the game, the Eye of Europe will be a giant alien structure that acts as a gate. If we enter it, we will be transported to the center of the red Eye of Jupiter, where we will float among the ruins of a mega structure. In the end we will find a "YOH-WEH" (Jove). Also we met there with past dwellers of Europe, who tell as about YOH-WEH. Its a god-like creature, who gifted the aliens a "song of YOH-WEH" that plunged their entire civilization into a kind of trance. They built a fortress around their “god” and protected him so that they could listen to his song in peace for eternity. But, oddly enough, they got tired of it, and the aliens literally rejoice when we say that we will finish this song. Thats it. (Oh, and Jove is a reason of deadly Jupiter radiation, so we also save the humanity in Europe)

The lore of barotrauma: Humanity starts to colonize the solar system, when they arive to colonize Europa, they find alien life and alien ruins with extremely advanced materials. But eventually Jupiter throws a hissy fit and saturates its surrounding area in radiation that prevents contact with the outside world and frys any ship that try’s to leave. This causes chaos on Europa eventually leading to the founding of the Coalition, a bunch of traders who came together and formed the only real nation on Europa. But the coalition is assholes to anyone who isn’t part of them or at least allied, so the Jovian separatists formed to try to make a democracy. There are also two cults, The children of the Honkmother who gain powerful gifts if they believe in her and wear a clown outfit. And the church of the husk, a bunch of people who believe that they can combine effectively water zombies and humans to be able to actually survive on Europa, they have figured out how to effectively form a symbiosis with the husk parasite.

Me and a buddy played a co-op run a while back in one of the Modded Dugongs. The only reason we completed one of our runs was luck, stubbornness, and what we had thought was an excessive amount of oxygen tanks. We had to more or less fully repair our sub three times during one mission. First time was from a Latcher, oddly not the most damaging of the three instances. The second was when my friend went to fire one of the shotgun rounds out of the railgun at a swarm of mudraptors at point-blank range, he forgot that he had previously loaded a nuke. The third time was less than a minute after we had gotten underway from repairing the previous damage, our reactor blew up. All in all the game is a blast but the difficulty slider is a myth, the only acceptable reaction to the horrors of the deep is overwhelming fire power, and the most important quality is an overwhelming stubbornness to claw your victory from the jaws of creatures coded to one hit you. If you have power, oxygen tanks, and welding fuel tanks you can repair your sub from even the worst damage.

I have played barptrauma quite a bit recently and it is a blast with friends. The physics of the game ensure laughter.
In terms of lore: they are on a moon of saturn called europa, having lost contact eith earth the moon has split into different factions, due to radiation eevryone stays under the ocean, the player is part of a crew doing odd jobs for money with the implied goal of getting deeper into the ocean, with even a setting to force players deeper with radiation increasing at the surface.
Not every player has the same objective with some traitors getting payed by rival factions to hinder the ship.

Human colonists have lost contact with earth and the radiation from Jupiter is penetrating deeper and deeper through the icy crust. You take on missions to explore, fight and transport to make money and delve deeper, ultimately aiming to discover the source of the gravitational anomalies present at the bottom of a giant impact crater. And as it's multiplayer, shenanigans ensue :P
