Ronald Hutton is an amazing resource to connect us with our distant ancestors and the power of cultural transmission. Ronald is a treasure!

JFC Michael Martin loves the sound of his own voice. I’m half way through and he hasn’t let either of the other participants get a word in. Prof Hutton is too patient and too polite.

I've heard there are, or used to be, some families in Cape Breton and other surrounding areas, who are of Scots and Irish heritage, that never stopped practicing, keeping their traditional ways secret all through the reformation and carried it with them to the Americas where they settled in Canada.

John Cowper Powys is underrated, but Professor Hutton's remarks were right on the nail.

I am just amazed by Ronald Hutton he see the hole picture with no judgment.
I Discovered him today watching a documentary on the History Channel. He's so enlightening with wisdom beyond most.
Interesting topic on paganism and Christianity. Though Christianity has Intertwined some pagan traits Christianity will never understand or except paganism entirely just my opinion from being a Christian who recently is exploring paganism.
Can one call themselve Christian and worship other Gods openly?

You can call yourself whatever you like, but others may beg to differ...
I've recently been exploring a christopagan identity. As near as I can tell it's when the Christians will call you a pagan and the Pagans will call you a Christian. But it's a space to move in between the two. I don't personally worship any other gods, although I acknowledge their existence, but paganism is more than just worship of old gods.

I think purely for ease of categorizing , the only requirement for the definition of a Christian is identifying as a Christian. Though many christians would disagree. There’s so much variety of belief between the denominations you can’t make an official orthodoxy that covers all of them

For the first time, I think I migt disagree with Prof Hutton : I do not think we should move away from the agricultural cycle - I think we should move back towards it, to a greater unity with nature, because this is good for our mental and physical health.

I like to add Native American practices to my Gaelic pagan ways. The easiest way to explain it is working with and respecting the local land spirits as well as interpretation of animal encounters from a Native perspective while also honoring the Dagda and Tuatha Dé Danonn

    Interesting.
Native Ceremonial cycle here isn’t tied to farming.
No formal agriculture in this particular region.
    Still beautiful though.

you're not saying what "this particular region" is. Many Native nations were nomadic but the Pueblo ceremonial life is closely tied to the agricultural year. As Nations turned more to agriculture the ceremonies did become more focused on crops

Don't ever mix paganism with Christianity! There is only one truth and you can find it in the Bible! If you don't believe that the Bible is the eternal Word of GOD you must study fulfilled Bible prophecy - only GOD can declare the end from the beginning!

But Paul did that in the first century. Most of roman catholicism is pagan rites now.
