  • In this video, I show you how to make a leather Moleskin Journal Cover. I am a HUGE fan of journals and notebooks... to the point that I probably have way too many in the shop. I have to write everything down or I won't remember it.
My favorite journals are made by Moleskin. These journals come in many different sizes as well as types of paper. This project video shows you how to make a leather cover for my favorite Moleskin notebook. The name of the one from Moleskin that I use is "Moleskine Classic Soft Cover Notebook" and the size is 5" x 8.25".
These notebook covers are a lot of fun to make and don't take as much time as other projects. They also make great gift ideas or products to offer to your customers.
In the video I mentioned our video on slicking edges on leather. If you missed that video then here is a link to that:
    dgsaddlery.com/how-to-slick-e...
I also mentioned our Portfolio Project video and You can check that video out here as well as support information:
    dgsaddlery.com/making-a-leath...
The patterns for this project are available in a full Companion Pattern Pack that you can DOWNLOAD and print out on your printer. the pattern pack includes all the cut patterns and lineup marks to help you quickly get into making one of these journal covers. The pattern pack also includes 6 different floral tooling patterns to help you get started. If you would like to purchase this, you can do so using this link:
    dgsaddlery.com/product/molesk...
*REMEMBER THAT ALL OF OUR PATTERN PACKS ARE INSTANT DOWNLOADS. We do not mail these out to you, instead you will get an email with links to download and print them out immediately after purchasing. No waiting on the Post Office!
I hope you enjoyed this video and be sure to check out our other videos. We have many other project videos, tutorials and quick tips on our channel! Be sure to Subscribe while your there too!
The sewing machine that we use in the video is a Singer 31-15 which is an old machine that has been refurbished. But if you are looking for a machine that will sew the weights of leather used in this project visit our friends at:
    www.leathermachineco.com/
And if you would like to try one of the Cobra Sewing machines that they produce and you are in the Waco, TX area, visit:
makersleathersupply.com/ They are Cobra dealers and have lots of machines for you to play around on... plus tons of leatherworking supplies and tools. Great folks!

You sir have inspired me a lot. I've been subribed to your channel a while now and I'm almost done watching them all. My head is spinning with dyes, paint, edge kote, finishes and what not (and yes I'm somewhat lost). I've just ordered my first tooling set and while waiting for it I couldn't resist and bought a piece of 8oz vegtan and started cutting with an hobby knife and for the edgebeveler I took a piece of steel which i rough ground into a beveler. And yes it looks like crap, but love it anyway :D
I've watched many channels but most just don't offer the information like you do. You just bring it straight and honest, even admitting you are still learning. Thank you for freeing your time from you business and creating this content. I especially love the fact that you diverge somewhat of the beaten track. floral patterns with different size circles, straight basket weave on a belt. I know it's probably not something popular with your customers, but I'd love to see artwork without the floral stuff, really take it of the beaten track.

Great channel! My biggest issue making book and journal covers I making my own patterns. They tend to be too large or mostly, a little to small. Like how much to add for the bends using different size leathers, and the inside pockets so the book fits in nicely.

Your videos gave me the confidence not only to go leather - but to tool it, basket weave etc, it came out damn near perfect and way better than I thought I could ever do. keep up the inspiring work. The details you give regarding the process are pure gold.

I'm a getting some tools etc. to start my learning curve of leather crafting this Christmas primarily due to your videos. So thank you for all your work and sharing your knowledge. After practicing, I am going to try to make this notebook cover. I have purchased your template package (again, thank you!), but two questions I have - and I apologize if you have these answered somewhere else: 1) What do you use for glue? 2) What do you use for dye? Lastly, I love the videos of your new shop - I hope to get down there someday to visit. Thanks again and Merry Christmas to you and your family.
