- In this video, I show you how to make a leather Moleskin Journal Cover. I am a HUGE fan of journals and notebooks... to the point that I probably have way too many in the shop. I have to write everything down or I won't remember it.
My favorite journals are made by Moleskin. These journals come in many different sizes as well as types of paper. This project video shows you how to make a leather cover for my favorite Moleskin notebook. The name of the one from Moleskin that I use is "Moleskine Classic Soft Cover Notebook" and the size is 5" x 8.25".
These notebook covers are a lot of fun to make and don't take as much time as other projects. They also make great gift ideas or products to offer to your customers.
In the video I mentioned our video on slicking edges on leather. If you missed that video then here is a link to that:

I also mentioned our Portfolio Project video and You can check that video out here as well as support information:

The patterns for this project are available in a full Companion Pattern Pack that you can DOWNLOAD and print out on your printer. the pattern pack includes all the cut patterns and lineup marks to help you quickly get into making one of these journal covers. The pattern pack also includes 6 different floral tooling patterns to help you get started. If you would like to purchase this, you can do so using this link:

Outstanding!!
Very nice, Don. Thanks so much for sharing!
Great video and just in time for those holiday gifts.
Really enjoy your work, your explanations are always quite comprehensive!!
Love this !! Thank you so much for sharing !!
Great work, enjoy your video’s!
I had watched this when you first released it but I always like watching yours a couple of times. Thank you for another fantastic video!
wow! nice work. Thanks for sharing.
lol I don't like going to town either. Very cool cover! Thank you for sharing.
Thanks for sharing your knowledge
Excellent, very informative, like the three piece cover. Thanks
I really appreciate your leatherwork videos, they are very informative and well made. Thank you for putting in the time and work to make them.
Outstanding, I really like that you are so good at teaching the “how to’s” of leather work... and the companion packs are so awesome. Thank you for sharing your knowledge with us. And Merry Christmas to you and yours.
Thank you, love this video. I love travelers notebooks and I am hoping to make me a few covers.
Great video. It always amazes me to see a craftsman make things look so simple. The way you just slice off the liner feather.
Solid video as always Don!!!
looks very sharp might have to make me one of those
Perfect!
Very nice Don. I’ve been making these covers for awhile but I really like your 3 piece cover.
Dang, really wanted to see how you dye with that effect. Especially with that border. Great video and beautiful craftsmanship!
I liked it so much awesome
You sir have inspired me a lot. I've been subribed to your channel a while now and I'm almost done watching them all. My head is spinning with dyes, paint, edge kote, finishes and what not (and yes I'm somewhat lost). I've just ordered my first tooling set and while waiting for it I couldn't resist and bought a piece of 8oz vegtan and started cutting with an hobby knife and for the edgebeveler I took a piece of steel which i rough ground into a beveler. And yes it looks like crap, but love it anyway :D
I've watched many channels but most just don't offer the information like you do. You just bring it straight and honest, even admitting you are still learning. Thank you for freeing your time from you business and creating this content. I especially love the fact that you diverge somewhat of the beaten track. floral patterns with different size circles, straight basket weave on a belt. I know it's probably not something popular with your customers, but I'd love to see artwork without the floral stuff, really take it of the beaten track.
youre amazing thank you
Hey Don great work like everything you made! Always frustrated when I see you drawing straight on the leather and it looks so great... maybe you should make more how to draw Sheridan videos ;)
Great channel! My biggest issue making book and journal covers I making my own patterns. They tend to be too large or mostly, a little to small. Like how much to add for the bends using different size leathers, and the inside pockets so the book fits in nicely.
Thank you for your time and expertise! What about leather suspenders?
Hi Don, I'm so glad RUclips suggested your channel for me to watch. You gave clear directions and very simple step to follow along and feel like you can complete this project. In my opinion how you broke down that book was simply brilliant. New Sub ringing that bell :D, liking the video. Have a safe day, Shana.
Awsome
Nice.
Thank you Don!!!!!! Luv it. just finished my first leather knife sheath for my hand made knives, I used to make them from kydex. Your videos gave me the confidence not only to go leather - but to tool it, basket weave etc, it came out damn near perfect and way better than I thought I could ever do. keep up the inspiring work. The details you give regarding the process are pure gold.
I'm a getting some tools etc. to start my learning curve of leather crafting this Christmas primarily due to your videos. So thank you for all your work and sharing your knowledge. After practicing, I am going to try to make this notebook cover. I have purchased your template package (again, thank you!), but two questions I have - and I apologize if you have these answered somewhere else: 1) What do you use for glue? 2) What do you use for dye? Lastly, I love the videos of your new shop - I hope to get down there someday to visit. Thanks again and Merry Christmas to you and your family.
They ARE expensive but you can use a fountain pen on it and it works wonders. Thanks for the tip with separate leather pieces - more than useful!
Don, I sent you a commet before about using the skiving tool. I have trouble using mine. It looks like yours has a deeper bend in it than the one I have. Did you modify yours? Could you do a short video on using this tool. Thanks really enjoy you work.
Thumbs up for not wanting to go to town. Everyone hates going to town. haha
Another great one I too would like to know what beveler and back grounder you used I purchased the companion pack and you were very generous with the extra patterns Thank you I’ve watched all your vids including the tooling ones but for us beginners it would be awesome if you slowed some of them down a bit when your tooling and drawing It would really help me to learn your technique ATB
Love your work. I want to know if you seal your liner and if you do, before or after you assemble your project and if after, before or after you stitch
Good day, been enjoying and learning from your videos , thanks for all the information. Just a question, have not seen a video on you work apron and would like to know how you set it up. Will be making one myself and doing research on what I will be making, specifically for me...thanks.
Great work! Very talented! Is there anyway I can learn to free draw the floral designs? Like aTemplate for example?
Really enjoyed the video. What knife are you using to trim the edges flush? Thanks
Me either . I hate going to town. That's the reason I moved way out & away. Sides that it waste the whole day. What beveller is that you are using. It looks round on 1 side.
Great video! I like that it is made of smaller pieces! I also have the question about what tool you are using inside the scrolls. I'm having the most trouble with the bevelers I have to make that small, tight turn. (Well, that and I'm fairly new so practice will help me also!) Thanks!!
Great video as always. Thank you. Starting mine now after watching many times to get ready. Question-On the inside panels and liner, do you use any type of finish? I didn't see any type of Tan Kote etc. to protect it?
Hi don I love your channel so much good information my 11 yearn old grandson has really started to enjoy doing this is there any way you could show an iPad cover or holder?
Great video and work!! I just got a singer 31-20. What size/kind of needle and thread do you use?
Watch bands!
Do you mind if o ask What kind of veg tan do you use, and where do you get it? Also are you casing the leather first to get that great brown burnishing look in your bevels? Thank you your channel is my favorite iv learned alot!
Love this! Do you sale these?
Don what do you have on your 31-15 to pull the leather through? Without it being a walking foot my 31-15 will shred the grain side. Sorry I dont know the proper name for what pulls it on the base.
Can you do a vid on how to make a binder portfolio that has a metal three ring binder in it? Like a photo album. Thanks!!
What tool did you use to go around the border to make the groove ?
What type of motor do you have on your Singer 31-15.
Will this be for sale online? I didn't see any on your website.
Sorry if I missed it in the video, but what weight leather for the cover?
What type tools do u prefer
Do you print the pattern off using regular letter size?
What are some of the resources or vendors for purchasing the leather
Goodnight
What size needle and thread do you use for the belts?
if you can help me with this question please
Great video. Thankyou so much for posting these videos from a newbie here in Scotland. One question "What is the purpose of the blue sticky tape you use at about 3.40.?"
Keeps the leather from stretching out of shape when you tool it. I use shelf paper from the dollar store, works great.
Don do you have a custom IPad case video or pattern?
After being tooled my thin leather curls real bad when it dries. How do you get your journal cover to sit so flat?
Could you draw me a sunflower pattern for a bible cover? Is there one in the companion pack? I want to make bible covers
I really enjoy your videos. I would love to do my own. I don't have the space to take it on. Would you be able to direct me to where I can have a couple nice belts made. Thank you.
Try Pounder at Eastern Oregon Leather
C Holland you can get a dg Saddlery belt on dgsaddlery.com!
If your not looking for a Don Gonzalez design belt i can also make you one
@@twanleatherco4897 I checked out DG site. The belts are not quite what I am looking for. If you would e mail me I can send a couple picks of what I have that I would like made of a good quality leather. Mr.hollandc@yahoo.com thanks
Why did you split the liner down the middle of the spline? Wouldn't a single piece work easier? FYI - About once a month Hobby Lobby puts all of their moleskin notebooks and sketchbooks on sale @ 50% off.
Man do you have a part number or brand for that push beveler? Ive been looking for one with no luck.
Barry king push beveler. Only makes 1
Is there a solution to the printed pattern pack being too small? What printer settings will make it the right size. I have tried twice and it’s still too small for a 5”x8.25” moleskine
Did you try it in A4 I’m a little worried I just wasted a bunch of material cutting it out using the letter size setting
Do you mind if I ask you what size of thread are you using to sew with?
More than likely #92 bonded nylon.
Love how the music just starts abruptly at a random point mid way through pattern process, lol
what weight leather do you use for journal covers?
5-6 I got it later in the video, thanks.
Don,
At about 5:10 in the video, you use a tool around the border. What was it?
Scott
It is a Barry King crescent border.
Were did you buy your leather?
As Don mentions in the video, he is using Hermann Oak tooling leather. I suspect he purchases in bulk directly from the factory. It is available through suppliers like Weaver Leather Supply and Springfield Leather Company among others.
you would probably sell a few of these to sail boat owners if you stamp the words LOG BOOK on them and some boat themes because most captains keep a log book for their boat
Don how much coffee would I have to drink to go that fast?
It would be nice if basketweave actually went that fast lol.
Very nice but needs a pen loop
Man I got dizzy af watching this video...🤣
lmao that glue container is nasty
moleskine is garbage paper, just ask any pen aficionado. Find something from Rhodia or Claierfontaine. much much better paper.
