Coming from a Chicago fan, Seattle deserves a team. All the support for OKC is coming from Durant and Westbrook. If they both left town, the team would be at the bottom of attendance.
Why would you think that? When New Orleans came and played here for two years the games was sold out everygame.
Martaize Fails they had CP3. While the teams weren't competitive, they were still watchable for the casual fan.
jo23bulls They were watchable and exciting for OKC but when they returned to New Orleans, they didn't get the same love. Plus CP3 wasn't near the player he is today.
Oooo-wheeee
I’m a Cavs fan and Clevelander and agree with you.
Coming from a loyal Sonics fan it took 3 years to stomach calling myself a Thunder fan. I am currently watching the playoffs wearing my Sonics Durant jersey. "We used to be Super....now we are just OK"
Ice Man at least u still have the TrailBlazers in the neighboring Portland
Its typical of David Stern to turn this interview down or anything to do with this story, it just speaks to his guilt and how wrong he was and how he knew about everything that going on.
David Stern could give a damn about the fans of the NBA, he's a front running commissioner. When the league is great and the sun is shining he's upfront trying to get his image in the frame, when things are bad he disappears and doesnt wanna be seen
The NBA needs a real commissioner, someone who really cares
I remember playing NBA Jam on the Super Nintendo. It's crazy to think that the Sonics no longer exist. It's downright lamentable
I was blown away when the Seattle Supersonics left.
it's was a bussiness movement. I didn't see something like this in another country or another sport. Bad luck that in USa aren't teams or squads, there's only Franchises
Yep Seattle is a big sports town and it really shows people's ignorance when they say the fans gave up on the Sonics.
We need fan ownership of sports clubs, like the Green Bay Packers and FC Barcelona. Then one wouldn't have to worry about relocation. I understand it's a business but these teams transcend that. They represent a city's, state's, and region's pride and become cultural icons.
The one thing which I really admire about Seattle is how much they support their teams. I wish I could say the same about my city, I live in Charlotte and if our teams are losing the seats are empty.
Bennett and Stern take the top prize for having the most homoerotic email exchange ever.
Thunder fan here, honestly, I wish it wasn't Seattle to get their team stripped from them. I am disgusted by Clay Bennett the way he stole the Supersonics and it will always be embarrassing to the state of Oklahoma. I love the Thunder, but I will always hate Clay Bennett.
That’s your decision.
OKC should thank what little front office the sonics had in drafting KD and Westbrook.
KurdtLycan is correst about the actually size and population of Atlanta. Atlanta is bigger than Seattle. Seattle is both cursed and blessed by the sound. It's expensive to build bridges so they have to build up instead of out.
However Seattle can support major league teams just as well Atlanta can. Seattle's market size is roughly the same as Atlanta's and much larger than most. Seattle has tons of other cities very close to Seattle that help support the sport teams.
Is there a link to Scott Soshnick's column that's mentioned in this?
All of your comments are identical. It's really hard to fail at being a troll but you somehow pull it off. Bravo.
if anyone is going to say the attendance was low toward the end, honestly there's only so much bleeding a fan can take... the bleeding unfortunately ended in well... the end. i'm for seattle getting a team and taking back everything that the sonics earned.
Sorry Seattle lost their team. I grow up watching GP and crew battle it out with Portland and the bulls. Loved the Sonics. But I'm an OKIE and I love our thunder. It truly sucks it went down this way.
All I have to say is Seattle stop blaming the fans. As you clearly saw in the video they said it was the government, and ownerships fault not ours, I love in OKC and the only reason why we got the SuperSonics is because when the Hornets came here after Hurricane Katrina the NBA saw that we could support a professional team and therefore the SuperSonics were moved.....
David Stern was a punk, a typical lawyer who is perpetually dishonest yet threatens people with slander suits if they speak their mind. It was 100% clear to anybody with any intelligence that Clay was talking about moving the team in that e-mail and then being a typical LIAR and saying "i meant keeping the team in Seattle" complete lie!!
as a person living in Vancouver i know we wont get a team in vancouver
so im going to join the sonics movement to hopefully one day get a team back in the northwest
Now your getting it! No but seriously, if you mean ATL is bigger in terms of area then there's no doubt it is. But I don't really judge cities by size considering the fact that Alaska holds like the top 4 or 5 spots in that category. So yes, ATL is bigger, in a sense that it has lot's of dirt fields, croplands, and what not. My friend Phil from Seattle lives there now and owns a burger joint called Phil Good burgers and he loves it but has mentioned multiple times that it's country as fuuuuuuuck
@kou187 Why are you dissing Spinner...?
Sonicsgate? WTF? How bout a documentary about a city that was known for a Bombing and Tornado tragedies and how this city came up from that and is known for something positive like bringing in and uplifting a New Orleans Hornets team and then getting their own team and helping that team take on the Lakers by being the loudest crowd in the whole playoffs. I'm a laker fan and I was at games 3 and 4 and that was the loudest arena i've ever been in. Those fans stood on their feet the whole time.
sad story
If the Thunder left OKC, I would be hurt and jealous too. I guess.
what team builds a new arena in a recession??
There have been quite a few new stadiums appearing around the US, and some utilize a public + private venture to fund them. Still, your point is valid that these stadiums aren't as important to finance as it would be for other city or state concerns, like education or infrastructure. Still, eighteen years ago Paul Allen bought the Seahawks after its owner had threatened to move the team to LA. He also included a plan for what is now 'the Clink' with that purchase, and look where the team is now, trying to get to the Super Bowl for the third consecutive year!
What Sherman Alexie says at 5:03 makes me cry. It's so sad, and yet true.
I'm not a Seattle fan and i don't have hate for okc fans and players but when i hear clay Bennett say we made it i get sick to my stomach
we didnt vote. the state voted. and they didnt vote based off of fan support, they voted based on better buildings. you guys had the better building cause its bigger.
Yes I agreed with him that Atlanta is much bigger when it comes to size. I was saying Seattle is bigger in regards to population, which I believe is more important in ranking cities. Sitka, Alaska is the largest city in the USA, with only a population of around 10,000. Followed by Juneau and I think two more Alaskan cities. These are not "city" cities. They consist mostly of forestation which I think is great, but to compare these cities to that of LA or NY simply based on area is crazy
6:35 what is this guy talking about. Seattle granted 2 venues to the Mariners & Seahawks yet wouldn't want taxpayers to front a small percentage for a new basketball arena that would equal more jobs & revenue to the city. that's business first & foremost
Because our football, wrestling, track, baseball outshine Bastketball in OK. Yes real passionate. ;)
Clay Bennet hired Sam Presti if not for that this team would not be where it is now
i miss the sonics and im not even a sonics fan
@rcinglad It's because the Grizzlies were never as important a team and it's due to the fact that the Sonics had been in Seattle for FOUR DECADES. There were plenty of relocation worthy teams and ours wasn't one of them... For a time we were one of the top 5 teams in the league annually and we were up there with the Lakers in the 70's and 90's.
westbrook didn't play a game in seattle, and durant only had one season there. . .
@fun1234982 i love how you change the subject to comparison. the argument was that you said the sonics only filled 50% of the arena. you were wrong and they filled roughly 80% on average. and that was just 1 season. and of course the thunder are gonna sell out almost every game of their inaugural season. which team wouldnt? the only reason we didnt average that high attendance in the first place was because the arena kept getting unfortunate to be in as the years went on.
I would be pist but I would go on and still love the Thunder no matter what because of the players.
@OklahomaGrl28 i dont think you would feel this way if the thunder came back to seattle. and your welcome for 41 years of history.
MLS is in Austin
wow Sacramento is moving to anaheim
It has nothing to do with fan support. Whether it's the Sonics, Thunder, Kings, Celtics, Lakers, etc. It has to do with business, money, arena, govt and probably a fair amount of backdoor deals and illegal activity. I can't speak for Sonics fans, cause quite frankly, I am not one, I am a Chicago fan, but I watched the documentary, I've watched sonicsgate's other videos, seen it on the news, followed the Kings problems, it's a money issue, it always was, always will be.
i am officially a sonics fan, still a mavs fan mainly though
Clay Bennett is lying out of his skin. Once Durant was drafted, they knew the Sonics were gonna relocate. They knew that having a big superstar and the money that he was probably gonna be making wasn't gonna be possible for the Sonics to bear in Seattle, so they moved to another city. I am fairly new to this story/saga, but that's what it seems like to me. I know one event didn't cause the relocation, but it was one of several (many?) that led to it. Stern is a big hypocrite as well.
I'm a New England transplant (Go UCONN! Go Pats!), but the passion these fans have for their teams is absurd. Theres a reason why Qwest/Clink leads the NFL in False Starts. Mark my words, Chris Hansen will be the Bob Kraft of the NBA... and we all now how that went down. Exciting times!
Where does the line end, then? Over here in Rhode Island we used to have The Providence Grays, who only lasted from 1878-1885, but won a World Series in the process. In 1884, Ross Radbourn threw for 59 or 60 wins in a single season as a pitcher. Just to have the team taken away the very next year. Great way to treat one of the first 10 colonies to develop this Nation.
Let me take the time to address that Deliverance comment I made yesterday. It was in the heat of the moment, and in bad taste so please allow me to apologize.
@buelllllllllllllllll It is just basketball. I love the game and love my team but seriously, it is just basketball.
P.S. The NBA leaving seattle for OKC is a national joke. See J.A., Bob Ryan, and Bill simmons.
@fun1234982 what difference does it make? it still shows our support and that we wanted to keep our team. if we left because of our attendance then at least a team or 2 would get relocated every single season. were the only team that got relocated since 1980 or something like that for not having bad attendance. it honestly makes me wanna smack people that say we lost our team cause of poor support. 100% false statement
Yes, Hansen offers to buy the team saying his plan all along was to move the team to Seattle and Bennett buying the team saying that "the Sonics and Seattle are synonymous " and "we have respect for history" when he bought the team.
what a joke
Think of the NBA teams that moved from a smaller market like Seattle, that had fan support. The primary example that comes to mind is the Charlotte Hornets. The fans did not tire of the franchise, they tired of George Shinn, When he moved the team to New Orleans no one batted an eye-lash, and what ended up happening to Shinn?? The NBA takes control of the Hornets and due to the mightyness and profits of the Saints Tom Benson swoops in and he CAN afford to keep them in New Orleans. See next post.
As a habitual weed smoking vegetarian, I take great offense to that. I know in the south you guys are not fans of marijuana smoking (the south has bammer weed) and veganism (yall love you some pig ass), but most northern cities have large populations of weed smokers and vegan/vegetarians, so are you saying they don't care about the NBA too? Or is it just Seattle? Personally every smoker or veggie I know is a big time NBA fan
i was hearing people talking about taking the Nets franchise down and make another Chicago team... damn man that would suck...
Durant looked better in a soncis jumper xD - Spurs fan
Part 2. There is no such refuge for the Thunder in OKC, If they start to stink and they will, its inevitable in the circle of NBA life (even the LAkers experience it every now and then), What is Bennett's secondary card to supplement the thunder, and fans will not support a product that sucks when the ticket, concession, and parking prices are high. In this economy very few families can even afford the bargain prices. All of this for the NBA to make a quick buck. Passion cannot trump economics.
I'm not a Seattle fan I admit I have only been to Seatle once. But this bothered me and still does. I grew up watching the NBA and no Sonics is till weired to this day. Sadly this can happen to any team unless you are in NYC, Chicago or L.A. Every franchise is up for grabs in every league which is sad pathetic.
I've never been to Seattle, but I was sad about this.
@basketball201120 Seattle Fans were some of the best in the NBA.. consistently, if not THE BEST. OKC should have taken a team in a position to be relocated, not one of the leagues most storied franchises. The NBA business model makes me sick.
@fun1234982 fans had no control over it. if anyone is pathetic in the situation, its nickels, stern, and schultz. they sold us out.
@the99drill I'm pretty sure he actually did give money
Give OKC the Seahawks too.
kca49 Hell No!
@fun1234982 we did
who sold our Seahawks?!
probably not but then again who did
We will get our sonics back cause Russell Wilson is in the arena deal
@ArthurDdG same exact boat as you buddy
Same
Sorry, Seattle. Your Mayor sold you out.
Oklahomans don't give a shit if they stole a team. They never had a professional team so they don't know what it's like to suffer through bad seasons. Decade after decade of horrible teams.
OKC needs to focus on public transportation and becoming a livable city. Then your team won't just play in your city- they'll actually want to live there.
After the last game of the season it's a race to the airport.
....we're never getting our team back. after four years. I give up
shout out and thumbs up for Coach Stan Van Gundy for compairing Stern to hitler
chris paul to seattle!
DUDE! even if we voted yes for the stadium upgrade bennett wouldve taken our stolen team to hick town. it had nothing to do with that! every since bennett became the owner of our team his one and only intentions were to get them out of seattle.
How come they couldnt have just pulled a "Cleveland Brown"? Let Bennet take the Team to OKC and give Seattle a new team with the same history and all that. Well guess thatll be the Hornets job
I like that idea.
not OK
everyone wonders when we will get a team, i feel its when lebron decides to make ANOTHER decision to choose to start a team in seattle idc if your the owner of the team lebron your great OR the day after david stern steps down. i wish the players like durant, collison, green and them could do somethin to revolt but they dont have the power, i get it. howard schultz just never knew shit about bball. why dont we just blame them all then :D
@fun1234982 they may be excuses, but there correct excuses.
Jason looks like a friggin sovereign citizen
NBA to Austin Texas
i hate how owners are always so fucking selfish when it comes to "new staduims"
this stuff makes me even more mad f this sh#t we even had a basketball court built where they should have supersonic scouts but now it's just a parking lot
ATL is about 20 cities behind Seattle in terms of size. Sorry to burst your bubble. In regards to the time you spent on QA/Capitol Hill, you may have or might not have ever left GA as far as I'm concerned, but count how many fucks I give either way. Again, the fans in Seattle played no part in the relocation of the Sonics. I really don't get how someone who hates the NBA, still feels that they know everything about it. As for me being a bigot, you're in no position to throw that word around.
@OklahomaGrl28 How can even say that? Must be nice to live in a glass house in a perfect world. You can't imagine what it's like to lose a team. Imagine some fuckwit from another place coming to you, lying to you, then stealing your team, stealing what you love. Then imagine watching them make the playoffs after so many years of crap, the one hope that keeps any fan coming back for more. But then your owner stole that, FOR YOU. You'll never understand what that feels like.
I could of been a supersonics fan but nope okc and the Starbucks owner killed that dream for me. Haha oh well.
I wish they had never changed the intro music and graphic for OTL..the new version sucks
As for your invitation to ANYWHERE in GA, no thanks. And it's not because it's "Chocolate-city" (a large black community doesn't make it a melting pot genius) as you call it, it's because I've seen Deliverance, and I'll pass. Not the black people I'm worried about lol.
@Supersonicsfan12 But the people of Seattle had a chance to vote for the upgrade right? Yes! They didn't so they paid the price. Plain and simple. Our city has had three sales tax plans called MAPS. It was to get a new arena, upgrade our downtown area, and to make Oklahoma City a much better place and it has paid off for us. Snooze you lose. Oh yeah, I'm a piece of shit that is witnessing one of the greatest players in the league right now while you dreaming bout the Shawn Kemp days.
Big Sam Ferguson they used to be Super. But now they’re just OK
@rcinglad I wasn't happy when they moved the Grizzlies.. especially not when they moved it to Memphis.. the NBA pits blackhole markets against each other because it is more profitable for Mr. Stern. I hope that Seattle and B.C. get teams again but until the Sonics do, I am not interested in the topic of "Basketball today".
May the Thunder NEVER win a NBA Title. [/rooting for the Heat and Celts and Lakers]
@mwest28 Lol, Life goes on for us man.
really they drafted james harden? that's news to me. they brought in kendrick perkins and derek fisher? interesting. what fantasy world are you seattelites living in?
Don’t worry Sonic fans. OKC paid the price by Kevin Durant leaving for Golden State.
sonics fans have a title..cant believe they took a team away with hardware which seems stupid now a days..this team wasn't from the 50's you know like the royals or hawks or something...
man you must be drunk or something. seattle in just about the best basketball city in the united states. what does it do there? rain. where do you go when it rains? to the Y to shoot hoops. i get that okc has literally nothing else to do, but that's just it. there's nothing else to do other than go for the thunder. seattle still has rally's for the sonics despite the bullshit that ensued soon after bennett rolled into town... you want loyal? seattle is as loyal as it gets.
Is David Stern is gay with him?
There's that ignorance again.
mmmmmmmmmm...i don't have time to wait for that. it's playoffs. enjoy post season nba in seattle. *crickets*
I hope they dont take our Kings
english 12 team I feel like we will never get a team back 😀
fuck the thunder, always will be the SONICS!! im a bulls fan
I hope okc never wins a crown unless its against the queen (lebron)
Austin fc Columbus Crew
you really have no idea what even happened, do you.
To anyone who thinks OK fans are not loyal, you obviously have never been to a OU or OSU football game. GTFOH. much better than wash and wash st get.
People in Seattle, need to chill out and get over it. OH, I was born in Seattle in 1973, where I grew up. A Sonics and Blazers fan. Japanese-American (meaning, I KNOW what it's like to "get wronged"). Fans in Seattle, the media, everybody, needs to chill out, and get over it.
Who are "you guys"? Loyal fans, which actually did and still do exist.? Everyone in OKC and/or supporting the zombiesonics(simmons4life) who insult sonic fans on any website. Have you ever been madly in love with someone, and they started dating some scumbag cause you made one mistake? Well OKC, YOUR THAT SCUMBAG. Count your blessings, have some respect.
