    I think it’s good to know that for this kind of drawing you’re using a model to creative a stylized figure that, without rendering, looks way more dramatic and expensive. I had a tough time reconciling between looking at more traditional and academic way of drawings and shifting to this, which has its roots in animation and movement based arts that can take liberty with character.

      @Eudaimonia All of them, the other drawing books I read before Mike's "Force" series felt like a really loaded, tiring experience, with a bit too much focus on form and rather "vague"/unclear explanations. His books made me have fun with drawing again.
      But if you're just starting out and have no familiarity with the ideas I'd recommend "Force: Dynamic Life Drawing For Animators" and "Force: Drawing Human Anatomy", they'll give you the conceptual foundation you need, then you can go for the others ;)

    Quick question - When he says 45 degrees are the most dramatic angles, is he referring to the angle in relation to the orientation of the canvas?
    Because in relation to each-other they are 90 degrees.
    Following through on that point, is it important to take note of the angles in relation to the canvas orientation? This is not something I typically do besides for composition. Is that how it is related?

    • @Juusokakku
      @Juusokakku 5 лет назад +6

      In relation to the ground, because it's about the force of gravity. If something is upright to the ground, it's falling straight. If it's lying horizontally, it's resting. Diagonal in relation to the ground means things are on their way to fall down and in the case of the figure drawing diagonals mean opposing forces balancing each other out.

    My problem with gesture drawing is I don't get _how to find the gesture_. People teaching it always talk as if that part is already apparent. Diego's drawing sure looks cool but he didn't really explain how he found the "forces" he was just like "as you can see we have this force going through here" and I'm just like "no, I don't see it, aren't you supposed to be teaching me how to see it?" Then Michael is like "we can take this force coming through here and push it even farther" and I'm just like "take from _where?_"

  • @mrpandabites
    @mrpandabites 5 лет назад +3

    While I understand the principle the first gentleman is trying to communicate, the direction of his force lines seems arbitrary in places. Then the second gentleman comes in and creates a more dynamic pose, but one that is not true to the reference. I get that using directional force lines is supposed to give one a better understanding of the gesture of the figure, however I don't quite understand where sharper angles making a more dynamic pose comes into it.

    • @t_mr975
      @t_mr975 5 лет назад +1

      Sharper lines I guess just exaggerates it so it's easier to see the main points of the pose?

    • @guilhermevianabarbosa803
      @guilhermevianabarbosa803 5 лет назад +1

      Depends on what exactly you mean by "true to the reference", if by that you mean restrainig yourself to doing a mere robotic copy of the pose the model is taking then "yes", but Mike always stresses the importance of not doing that in his books; instead, you should go after it's essence. You have to be able to understand the main ideas of a pose and how to exaggerate them in order to express those ideas as clear as possible to whomever might be looking at your work, after all, they may not have the same level of clarity your brain and eyes possess. Besides the fact it'll help you in creating more lively, organic-looking figures, that is.

      im not an expert but from what i can understand or make of it, it is about putting curved lines in the proper places and lengths to create the movement and idea of a body. the flow being the idea of movement, and how a line could evoke that through a 2D still medium.

    Great Video! I'm just starting out and trying to tackle the challenge of building myself a "Learning Plan" or "Progress Plan". After fundamentals/basic geometrical shapes, basic perspective, I was thinking anatomy would be the next logical area I would like to study. Is Mr. Mattesi suggesting I start out with this type of gesture drawing BEFORE getting into Anatomy? (11:35) thanx!

    If by 45 degrees he means 90 degrees (because the bend in the elbow is 90 degrees). Although I get that compared to the straight vertical the upper arm is about 45 degrees from that

    This method helped me substantially. Finally my gesture drawings actually resemble humans!

    Made me thought that when we draw the figure, we are actually slowing the time and space while a force is applied to the mass. And every gestural line forwards the time until you find the right moment. That's why I think the stiff figure drawings look frozen and good ones are in infinite motion. Might draw later idk.

    Great video. But being an engineer, the use of the word "force" in a context unusual for me, is a bit distracting. xD.
    Anyways, gesture is one of my weaknesses, and this helped.

    The feet on the second drawing don't work with the legs. The face the wrong direction.
