- If you’ve watched my videos, you might know that I haven’t had the best experience with purchasing consoles from DK Oldies in the past. But today we’re going to give them another chance! I bought two PlayStation 4 Destiny Editions, one from DK Oldies, and one from an Ebay seller. I will be comparing the two to see how the DK Oldies console holds up against the Ebay console and whether both sellers were honest or not with their listings. Let’s get into it!

Not everyone can repair a game system. Paying $300 for a game system that don't work is a scam.
you give dk oldies too much credit, yes its clean but without repairing it you have a clean paper weight.
Fact .
Yeah…. but let’s be real. most of the time, used consoles will work. I’ve bought dozens of used consoles over the years and if memory serves, only one hasn’t worked.
That is true!
@@leeartlee915
Not from DK Oldies surely?
Yep, he buys a pile of trash for double FMV and manages to say nice things about it.... Bottom line is they are still a scam and do some research before paying inflated prices on consoles.
You're far too kind, SHAMEFUL of DK Oldies to be sending out a BROKEN console like that ,embarrassing in fact
They should be ashamed, can you imagine some poor kid getting this broken
Yeah, that is quite sad to imagine
Selling broken consoles as "good" condition is false advertising and very bad for the customer. There is no excuse for that.
I miss the ray of light and the sound when applying the thermal paste!!!! Bring it back Steve!!!
This is a longform video of one he did ages ago, so thats why theres no modern effects.
I was going to say the same thing. This is actually a newer video from when he was sick.
I agree... the sound when thermal paste is applied NEEDS TO BE MANDATORY!
When I saw QC sticker with the "Functionality Confirmed" box with a cross I though "There's no way DK oldies would ship a broken console, so is just another person checking that with a cross" Welp, they never changed...
How the hell is DK oldies still in business?! Mind blowing
When they charge twice as much, they can afford to send replacements 😂
Nothing like refurbishing a refurbished system from DK Oldies!
Lol
Im glad you are still with us. ❤
DK Oldies reminds of the automotive repair business, nuff said.
Dk autoholic if rings bell
I hope you don't have cancer and im sorry if you do... Godspeed and thank you for the videos
You could not pay me to buy anything from DK oldies!
I will pay you to buy something from dk oldies
paying over $200 for a ps4 not in box is crazy
Steve is the only guy who gives credit for near perfect thermal paste when they sold him a duffer. I’d be slating the ass off them.
It's crazy that this in an improvement.
Since you bought such a specific version of the PS4, DK might be able to track it (along with using the QA sticker), so it might be better to not use the same buyer the next time. They might flag that specific buyer and send an especially good console.
The x on DK Oldies checklist by the “tested working” meant either it wasn’t tested or that it wasn’t working. Honestly the EBay one was miles better than DK Oldies and less than half the price.
Well, if you like to talk trash about dkoldies complaining about things like ebay is better than dkoldies then why don't people complain about lukie games, ever heard of them? I bought a ps1 console from them and it did not work. I contacted them at least 3 times and eventually they wanted me to send it back first then they would send a replacement. i just had a bad experience with ebay from buying a dreamcast console that I was told by the seller it was tested. yeah, it was tested alright because when i turned it on the controller would not respond and the seller does not accept returns or give refunds. it's sitting in my closet collecting dust because i can't get it fixed.
and by the way, you can get a dreamcast from dkoldies for under $200 but lukie games are more than $200, do the math on who has the lowest price.
The math only works out if the Dreamcast from DK oldies works.
10:50 Functionality Confirmed has an X not a tick, they send something they know is not working
I don't understand how people can scratch their consoles... I have my old OG XBOX that is 20 years old and it looks like it was new.
A lot of people clean their consoles with a piece of cloth that can easily scratch the finish. Happened to my OG PS3. Every time it was wiped down, micro scratches appear and increased over time every time it’s wiped down. Stuff like this is very easy to do.
@@ChazYocommicro scratches on glossy surfaces; sure. My PS5 has those to speak nothing of my PS3 which looks terrible… I need to buff it out.
But I bought a GameCube that has gouges taken out of it, like someone dragged it behind their car or something… I’d like to know how those happened.
So dk oldies chose to not replace a 2 dollar battery? That alone would prevent me from buying from them.
Thinking the same thing, there's cost-cutting and there's taking the pi$$
How about their inflated prices. Doesn’t that scare you off more?
@@leeartlee915 Their prices would make sense if they did a good job and provided the warranty. Giving at least 1 year for all used systems. That's worth a lot more than the typical 30 day return/ money back you usually get from places like ebay. (Some ebay sellers provide longer, but not all)
That warranty is worth to me at least, a premium. The issue I have is that it's not a working console/controller. So the inflated price would make sense if the console actually worked. IMO. Having the piece of mind that within a year, you theoretically are covered.
Love your videos!
Heads up! You forgot to blur out the name when you logged on. (after the first blur on the select account screen)
Your much more gracious for used systems steve. If its advertised in excellent condition, i expect it to be clean on the inside. You shouldnt have to clean it yourself.
I have that PS4 destiny edition. Such a cool looking console. Also my first PS4 coming from a Xbox One
DK Oldies used a X again at the Functionality box instead of a check mark like the rest, so clearly they know it have some faults
Was going to say this also.
Good point!
Pretty sure that's some Orctic Silver 5. Like buying a Molex watch in Times Square.
$315 for a $50 console, OOOF!
I mean... there was an X next to Confirmed Functionality not a check mark.
Great video the cleaning process was a lot better but they should have tested it before selling. With the controller maybe the ps button doesn't work.
Wow. I've never dealt with dk oldies yet but after watching this my purchases will be very limited.
That's the exact same PS4 I bought in 2015. I've only ever opened it once to install a 2TB HDD and it works fine to this day.
Bruh, the cables and conch coming in a tied up plastic bag had me howling 😂 this dude DK Oldies runnin on Dollar General time 😂
That's definitely a Gamestop Refurb, reminds me of my Wii U that a friend gave me, every screws were stripped
For the price at DK-Oldies this console is not worth more than 130 bucks. If you were not someone with lots of replacement parts, you'd be sending it back and wait again, in the meantime no game console.
Where have you been? And what happened to you steve? Ive been a fan for years and i am glad you are okay
I was cracking up when he was acting like he was going to eat the thermal paste 😂 that was hilarious
Usually this happens with thermal paste after a while with dye chips because of the pump out effect i really wouldn't do thermal paste on dye chips but IHS (PC socket chips or any other console chip like the Xbox 360 Slim- E) For laptops/consoles or anything with a dye chip I'd use PTM since that's what will stay on the chip and you never have to replace it
Hey, how is the treatment going? Any health updates? Be well!
I'm finished with treatments now and am in complete remission!
@@TronicsFixLongs great! Excellent news!
But DK'$ has quality assurance measures to make sure this sort of thing does not happen especially in a $300 + console ..😱
So what i took away from this video is, I'll only buy my used stuff from you! Thank you good sir 💯
Side note: i have an old white XBox360 that could be fixed and needs cleaned. I'll give it to ya for free if you want it 💯
could you do a video on repairing the controller if this console wasnt returned? id find that interesting and im sure many people would too.
Im surprised someone hasnt filed a class action lawsuit against DicK games.
Put this on your main channel, ppl need to see it. Or link it in a video, with a video link..
8:40 i'm pretty sure those were some of those thermopads mushed together to act as a paste... the consistency looked close enough
In my experience with PS4 controllers you need to let them charge for a bit, if the batteries are completely flat, before they will connect
I would like to point out if you go back to the quality control card, the functionality confirmed box has an x in it while the other two have checks. Not justifying cause they say on the site they function properly. Got me nervous about the Ps3 i just ordered for $135.
One thing I just dont understand is who is buying from dk oldies? Its so weird, people are paying 3x over the odds for their systems? why?
I'm 99% sure I saw that ebay PS4 on a youtube video a while back ... I saw one just like that which was also sanded down.
I still want the destiny ps4 it looks so awesome imo the best special edition console made
GTA is the go-to disc to be left in a console, it seems. :)
It has 2 ticks for thermal paste and clock battery but the functionality has a cross by it which could suggest this was not done ?
On the check sheet there was an X on the functionality tick box so does that mean it wasn't tested? Or they marked it as such after testing knowing it didn't work fully?
I swear I watched this video like 2 months ago....
This is the LONGS channel so same video as the one you watched but longer. It took me a while to figure it out ;)
Maybe the controller battery was dead dead and needed to charge a few minutes. That's what happens when my switch, phone, tablet batteries are at 0.
Naw, I've repaired hundreds of ps4 controllers and that's simply not how it goes on the ps4. If you have it connected it should be able to have it instantly connect even with a completely dead battery.
The thermal paste looks a little like white heatsink compound I used to use on large semiconductors in TVs etc - def not rright for CPUs
Just out of curiosity did you let the controller charge up and then retry later? I ran into that with my dual shock on my ps4 and it was iust because the battery was completely dead and discharged. Same thing orange light to charge but wouldn't turn the system on.
After charging for afew hours however I retested it and it turned in right away.
Just a heads up.
I bought an xbox 360 S a year ago and still works fine.
Sad part about this is...Game Stop isn't much better either. The kids who work at these places could care less about what they are doing and take no pride in their work. It's just a paycheck to them. However, management must provide oversight to these kinds of things but apparently that doesn't happen. Buying used on E-Bay is always a risk but if you are very selective about who you do business with it can pay off with some good deals. Reading a seller's feedback is absolutely essential and the more negative responses a seller has the less likely I will deal with them. I've been buying and selling electronics on E-Bay for decades and had very few problems with sellers.
Literally how. They have a ''check'' system for what? Nothing that's what. Idk how this still happens
Could have sworn I saw this same video like 5 months ago. Was it removed and then had to be re-uploaded?
That one off ebay listed as excellent I'd be sending it back lol
Along with the junk from dk
I do wonder if that even is thermal paste, or did they use thermal putty thinking it would work
you should spread it out and not rely on it being squashed by the pressure of the block as is the case with cpus as theres just not enough pressure by design since its a bare die and not a heatspreader. applies to gpus and other such stuff.
I'd say you're probably correct on that, I do so myself but I think it's just blob-applied at factory so I doubt it matters too much.
The ebay one looks like it just needs a bit of a wipe down and works dident get taken apart by the average game player owner
Is mayonnaise a thermal paste?
No, Patrick, mayonnaise is *not* a thermal paste.
DK Oldies strikes again 🤣 , paying a premium price just to get something that it broken.... and having to fix it yourself 🤣
You know mayonnaise is basically eggs? You'd definitely know if it was mayo from the stentch 😂
When you say "donor board", do you mean the board was given to you ? Or is it parts from a console you couldn't fix? Thanks 👍
usually it means a console that couldnt be fixed
Patrick: Is mayonnaise a type of thermal paste? 😅
i wonder why the controllers have that connection issue. mine will do that sometimes.
Is it the HD if there’s a black screen after ps logo?
great video, thank you
Losing thermal pads and screws is my passion
The moment i saw the long charging cable i knew the controller won't connect wirelessly 😆
Just a notice: at 4:05 you forgot to blur the persons name in the top left corner.
Yeah just purchased a Nintendo Ds game from dk oldies and the pins were completely damaged and game unplayable. Fortunately they are sending a replacement but they obviously did not check the quality of the game before shelving it for sell, which is a let down.
It also said on the piece of paper that they didnt test functionality. I dont know how someone would pay 300 bucks for something that hasnt even been fully tested.
In the small print: digital only
6:32 Yep those stickers are the 100% proof this seller bought the system from GS before selling it to you.
Nobody should pay $300 for a PS4 unless it is mint, many controllers, and dozens of games. ❤
What is the logic in sanding the console?
So the ebay console needs a little TLC. At least it works. Give it the perfect amount of thermal paste and clean the controller and console and call it good.
The perfect amount of........ "Toothpaste?!"
I’m surprised no tamper sticker on dk oldies unit
I want to know what was wrong with the controller!
Wait, why does GameStop sand consoles?? Lol
Is this a reupload? i thought I seen this several months ago.
Wait, am I wrong or is it impossible to actually register the PS4 on your name when it wasnt reset? Like, you would need to ask the old owner to manually unlink it from their PS Account, right?
So basically, the PS4 will never be possible to fully use this way. Sony Support does not help with that.
Naw you can just initialize it. But doing a proper full initialization to fully remove user data (I think it formats the disk and writes it with all 0's) takes about 4 hours.
@@mugogrog really that works? Last time i tried it said that the console is still registered in someone elses account, they had to log in and unlink it from their sony account.
@@BatLB Yeah I've never had what you describe happen. When you initialize a consol you create a new user so there's really nothing on the system that ties it to the old user.
@@mugogrog if you check your Sony Account, devices are tied to an Account. As such, you cant tie it to a new account as long as its still registered to someone elses.
@@BatLB This sure is new to me. I've bought and sold 20 or more ps4's and I've never bumped into this. Many of the ones I bought were not factory reset or anything like that so it strikes me as odd that not onr person would have called me up angry that they couldn't register an account on their consol.
Do I know for sure, no. Do I find it weird. Incredibly.
As I said initializing a console factory resets it. It's what Sony themselves do when selling refurbished consols and I have never heard of them asking people to de register anything when returning faulty units. Nor do they, to my knowlege ask for any user information. Just doesn't add up for me.
Have you tried doing a full initialization?
Is mayonnaise a thermal paste?
Even if their consoles were cleaned and working their prices are astronomical. Million other small businesses that refurbish that i would send someone to over dk oldies
$249.99 and they have "X" on functionality. Wow.
Even if it were working right out the box, $249.99 for a PS4 in 2024 is criminal. Like you showed, the average price for one used should be $110-$140 depending on what's included.
The white stuff on the APU looks like K5 Pro, a terrible thermal putty. It's poor performing for memory chips, so using it on a APU/CPU is definitely not recommended.
A lot of eBay sellers are just resellers. They judge the condition of what they're selling at face value. I've had a fair amount of transactions that have gone the same way. Purchase a game that externally looks good only to find liquid damage or other damage inflicted by the previous owner.
The DK Oldies console should have never left their door in that condition. I hope you sent them an e-mail to let them know that they were secret shopped and what you found.
Joey would be shocked😂
The controller won't connect as long as it's 'checking system storage'
It wasn't checking storage when he tried connecting it. You can see he tried another controller and that worked immediately. Also double checked it with the consol fully booted at the end.
At least they polished the damaged turd 👌🙂👍
Who would want to buy their kid a console for Christmas and their kid has these problems Christmas morning. It seems like the crew is paid per item tested, not repaired. I'm glad I waited to buy that Xbox.
Being in this business as a hobbyist this annoys me so much, especially that theres so many 'repairshops' that dont actually repair stuff properly but just flip things. Especially for the prices asked this is just disgusting.
Charing almost retail price at release for a ps4 that doesnt work is absurd.
Ottimo lavoro
