This is awesome. The story of the woman whose car was nearly hijacked just brought SF therapy alive to me in another way. Also the story of how you developed hope as a 10 year old too. Wow I pray I influence lives like you have :)
I am enjoying hearing your talk ...so important to highlight the clients impetus for resilience and the small glimmers of hope that will create a pathway towards the light.. Wonderful to feel those surges towards wellness whilst offering work too.
Hi Elliott! Thank you for all your videos, they are very helpful. Especially for your comment "you have to trust your clients". I think therapy culture most of us live in discourages us from believing our clients know anything about how to proceed in their lives. Also thank you for your advice to trust the process :)
I just watched a video where you said that you were suicidal at 12 years old and that you heard a sermon from a preacher with the same message VS in this video where you say you were 10 years old on a field trip on a bus and only here it was your mother with the message…
Hi Elliott from New Zealand. This webinar is so useful. I work with youth who have PTSD. I have learnt so much and can't wait to apply these ideas to my job, thank you
When I was in about fourth grade, maybe I would say the fact that at the front of our house burned down while we were still inside of it kind of messed me up. Somehow, nice neighbor, lady across the street started taking us to some church then eventually became quite a mega church actually. She was noted for living on her pension and renting a room from the lady across the street from us, and being the first woman to give a dollar to the building fund of the small church. She belong to that later, became a mega church. She was the real deal in my opinion. Anyway, some little church bus would come along and pick us up and they took us through different neighborhoods in the area and up to some kind a Sunday school thing There was this kid, their name, Darrell So when I was in high school, I heard Darrell committed suicide I remember Darrell in the little church groups and he said he wanted to grow up and learn if what was happening on the Jetsons cartoon would actually happen We would talk about flying around in space ships, and only having to eat one pill for a whole meal He actually kind of made fun of me a couple times because I have a name that people can easily make fun of but he made an extra special effort to try to make fun of me I didn’t particularly like him at all, to be honest I went there to learn the stupid Bible verses, because they gave you a big old chocolate chip cookie if you remember these verses The shortest one in the Bible, by the way, is Jesus wept, which is only two words That’ll get you a cookie So anyway, I’ve always thought about being the one who would survive to see if the Jetsons cartoon came true because Darrell didn’t stick around to see for himself and I thought that was fucking bullshit Like I don’t know what the kid was going through so I don’t wanna judge him But he’s dead I’m not
Agree that hope and resourcing are key. I love the videos. The questions are indeed powerful!! But just thought I'll make a comment about the "trauma-focused" therapist (at the beginning of your video). The way he/she conducted trauma treatment is definitely not the way we treat trauma:) Trauma-informed practice has a lot of research, somatic and neurological knowledge and it isn't necessarily problem-focused. When used at all, exposure methods are used in later stages of the CBT protocol. Trauma-informed practice also equips the therapist to work with dissociation! Dissociative parts could throw some SFBT therapists off during the session?

I disagree that dissociation could throw SFBT therapists off. What are you basing that off of?
Very helpful and informative.
I am veyr glad you liked it!
