Draft legal triathlon races used to be exclusive to the elites. However, as of 2016, the age group sprint world champs are now draft legal. By sitting in the slipstream behind another rider you can save up to 30% of your energy.
Mark shows how to daft with his GCN test dummy John Cannings and gives an insight into the differences seen in draft legal triathlon racing. These include:
- Different equipment - athletes use a road bike rather than tri bike however elites can use clip on aero bars
- Race dynamics - it is exciting and unpredictable as athletes have to react to each other rather than ride at their own TT pace.
- How To - athletes ride through and off. Accelerating through the group and then pulling off to the side, each taking a turn on the front.
- Wind direction - this is important with the accelerating side being protected from the wind.
- Communication - this is key when riding in a group to unsure safe riding and efficiency in the group.

Global Triathlon Network Nope! I'm new to triathlon, so I am unable to hold the wheel for very long. I did one drafting and one non-drafting. Non-drafting anyday!
yes please
Global Triathlon Network you might as well just skip two of the disciplines since you'll be just towing each other to the run anyway basically turns it into a running race with a group warm up before hand completely negates strong swimmers and cyclists why swim fast to get out the water if you're just going to form a group with the pack behind anyway?
I think, I actually prefer non-drafting. It is about the power of oneself and overcoming one's own limitations from the last race, your last bike etc. If you allow drafting, you mostly make sure that the actual battle for positions almost exclusively happens in the run.
Have you ever raced or watched a draft legal race? That's not at all true
How good does our man Jon look!
looks wet
Basil Fumphlinhope thanks Basil! Jon
Basil Fumphlinhope lol!
James Hobbs correct. ☔
Is he contractually only allowed to talk in GCN videos?
Have been watching all the gtn vids. I thought this one the best so far. It was informative, interesting, and humorous. Keep up the good wotk!
Thanks wsheinbaum!
We can also participate in local races. It helps to get used to the crowd!
Really informative video and personally I'd like to see more draft legal races (in the UK). I just got back from Rotterdam had my most enjoyable race for a long time in the 30-34 AG sprint. Big packs seem not to form in AG racing since, unlike the elites, there are big differences in people's swim times, even at the world champs. Personally I made up 22 places on the bike and the tactics of who to work with, who to drop, when to sit in etc etc added load of extra excitement compared to the 'time trial' of non-drafting races.
Time for a video on how the training for draft-legal and non-drafting races is different. The relative importance of running and especially swimming in draft-legal triathlon is one thing, but the pattern of the effort on the bike (more interval-like with group riding versus steady in TT riding, esp. on a flat course) means a draft-legal race can kill your legs if you're following a non-drafting plan (and vice versa).
Would love to see an Olympic distance draft-legal format for us age groupers.
Great Video! ❤️
Thanks Tope 👍
Video seems to imply that riders push their way to the front before peeling off. I agree with the way you describe that riders circulate, moving off towards the wind. However, isn't it clearer to say that riders should get to the front because the rider at the front moves off and drifts to the back before rejoining the line. The new front rider then pulls until he/she moves off. No surges to get to the front and no speeding up when it's your turn to pull. Isn't that more efficient?
May an athlete be in their aero bars or have their elbows on the handlebars when sitting in a pack/in the draft, in a draft legal race??
The rule that most competitors miss, when entering a draft-legal race (non agegroup), is that the wheels must be _UCI approved_ (or standard alloy wheels). Had to turn away some 14 or 15 bikes on the bike checkin of our national championships this year.
aniara64 if the rule is "UCI approved" then even TT frames are allowed, correct? Never heard of wheels not being UCI approved, that's really unfortunate. Are bullhorn handlebars OK or do they have to be regular format drop handlebars?
There is a lot of rules regarding the frame, but if you have a UCI legal roadbike (code RD) you are safe, and if it's a UCI TT-bike (code TT) you have to check the rulebook. The UCI have two lists of approved non-standard wheels, one for the old test -2015, and one for the new test 2016-. Only traditional drop handlebars are permitted.
For age-groupers, wheels don't need to be UCI approved, just have 12 or more spokes (no discs!).
@@adsheps so can they be any rim depth providing they’re not discs? So can you ride with 90s on? Got my first DL duathlon in a few weeks and baffled by the lack of info!
Well, this is something i can relate to... cycling!
I have done some draft legal races and everyone was swearing at me for not taking turns, but i'm not a very good cyclist and have a decent run so i always had to save energy on the bike
What about TT bikes with electric shifters? Those can be driven in normal race position (brakes and shifters on the handlebars). Would they be legal for use in a drafting race if the frame itself is UCI legal?
No tt extensions allowed
You forgot the risky elbows on the handlebars
yes pleas
Any good websites that list age group draft legal races around the US?
The best way would be to contact someone at Team USA Triathlon and hopefully they can point you in the right direction.
Don't think you're (currently) allowed disc brakes for draft legal races. Not in the UK road based events anyway
Stephen Jones not in Canada either
You're correct. Thanks, Mark
Same in German Triathlon League Races
ITU banned them too
Bar ends plugged? Is that really a problem?
Yes, if you don't have bar ends in and crash, then it can be very dangerous if you impale a competitor, particularly with aero bars.
Bad info. Being on the hoods with your forearms parallel to the ground is supposed to be more aero than grabbing the drops. The drops are for keeping you low when you sprint.
Saurabh Kulkarni ha! Same for everyone on any bike?
Sometimes it's easier to stay low on the drops because your arms can be a bit straighter
how about truly individual races - not even swimming drafting should be allowed...
A complete individual time trial would be an interesting race!
Lol dont be mean to John 😂
He can look after himself... Jon was dishing the pain out really!
Stephan Wijma I can take it. Jon.
Smh all these people saying the first two don't count. Do you even Flora Duffy?
"Test dummy"? That's just wrong....
Tim Krause I know. I feel violated and insulted! Jon 😉
Gotta love drafting a bunch of good cyclists just to take them all on the run
Your riding on the wrong side of the road mate
