1. I will explain what competency-based interview questions are.
2. I will give you a brilliant structure to use when answering competency-based interview questions.
3. I will give you several example competency-based questions and top-scoring answers!
WHAT ARE COMPETENCY-BASED INTERVIEW QUESTIONS?
When a hiring manager creates the person specification for a job, they will usually create a list of COMPETENCIES that are required to do the job properly. Competencies are a set of characteristics and skills needed in a particular job.
Example competencies for job interview include:
- Teamwork.
- Problem-solving.
- Customer focus.
- Decision-making.
- Responsibility.
- Results-driven.
How do you prepare for a competency-based interview?
Competency-based interview questions will usually start with:
Q. Tell me about a time when you…
Q. Describe a situation you were in where you had to…
Q. Give an example of a time when you…
So, you can see that the interview question is asking you to give a SPECIFIC SITUATION you have previously been in that demonstrates the competency being assessed.
HOW SHOULD YOU ANSWER COMPETENCY-BASED INTERVIEW QUESTIONS?
A brilliant tried-and-tested structure for answering competency-based interview questions is to use the STAR technique. With the STAR technique…
- You start off and tell the interviewer the SITUATION you were faced with.
- You then move and explain the TASK that needed doing.
- You then give details about the ACTION you took.
- Finish off with the RESULTS following your actions!

The first question is based on the competency of CUSTOMER FOCUS.

I'm in line for a very intimidating interview for a BC government position. They were nice enough to send me the pair of questions they would ask, so I have time to prepare my answers and notes, but man I'd be lying if I said that I wasn't anxious.

Q3.Describe a time when you had to plan for several alternative cause of action in response to new organization direction
Happy to help! Q1. To answer, discuss a situation where you showed initiative and problem-solving skills. For example, "In a busy shift, a patient required urgent attention. Without supervisor availability, I swiftly assessed the situation, followed established protocols, and provided necessary care. This demonstrated my autonomy and commitment to patient well-being, a key competency in decision-making."
Q2. This question assesses resilience and time management. Answer by describing a time when external factors threatened a deadline. For instance, "During a project deadline, unexpected technical issues arose. Despite interruptions, I prioritized tasks, communicated with stakeholders about the delay, and efficiently resolved the issues. This demonstrated my adaptability and ability to manage unforeseen challenges, essential competencies in meeting deadlines."
Q3. This question evaluates strategic thinking and adaptability. Provide an example where you navigated organizational changes. For instance, "When faced with new organizational directives, I analyzed implications, developed multiple action plans, and consulted with team members to ensure alignment. This demonstrated my strategic planning skills and ability to adapt to evolving circumstances, crucial competencies in responding to organizational changes."

Hello Richard. How are you? I have got a competency-based interview next week with William Hill betting, which lasts for one hour. I don't think with in that time the interviewer will only be asking me four questions. I suppose they will be showing me around etc. Thanks by the way for your interview videos.

Might be silly question, but can you make up your responses or does it have to be an actual time? As sometimes I struggle to remember examples and get flustered!
Ideally, you should use real examples however if you do not have any you should explain to the interviewer what you would do in the situation :)
