Dude, you are my role model! I do hate these VFDs as well! I don't like EEVs on refrigeration equipment either! Converted HeatCraft (Beacon II) freezers with those EEVs to TXV/Defrost timer set ups and now it runs trouble free!
With that thermostat set to electric, is there a fan delay when (gas) heating turns on?

Do the other ends of the wires from your 24 v coil connect to the control board harness?? I see smaller gauge from control board angle.
The cables that connect to the board terminals are those that connect to those of the thermostat

VFD's can be tricky, if you have like units , I would have swapped parts to find the issue, a fix could possibly just been reconfigure a few settings?
Have a carrier with vfds for blower fans and it gives an error of f5 fan running out of control. Would your fix work on this?

You can use some micro relays (finder) with the contactor combined with the VFD to make a transfer switch from vfd to contactor when the vfd fails

I'm not a fan of York equipment in general, but wondering if you have any tips for placing temperature probes for superheat/subcool in package equipment (especially Yorks), because it is so dang hard to reach into the compressor compartment in some of their older equipment!! Thanks in advance from Nashville!

possibly but I am not sure because of how long ago
The company I work for, our units have an Entouch thermostat. It would have to be programmed by management. I have trouble when you get a power blip and loose a leg for a second. The VFD faults out and the unit stops working. I have to drive out just to press the stop/reset button on the drive. Very aggravating.

I did it to my work it’s a carrier rtu. The vfd is burnt. I follow the wire and it’s easy for carrier it plugs in I don’t have to add a relay.

I just came across this video and I'm going to tell you a few things that will help you in the future. Point 1. The reason you are having a difficult time with the VFD is most likely you have a high leg. The VFD doesn't like this. It will run for a while and then decide to lock out. VFD's don't work with a high leg of power. Point 2. You didn't have to run power from the G terminal and common. You also didn't have to switch the T-stat to Electric. If you read the schematic, there is a relay in the top left side of the control panel. It's a clear relay with a normaly open set of contacts and a 24v coil. That's the low voltage power to the VFD. It's energized on a call for heat or cooling. Simply remove the 24v coil wires from the relay and put them on your contactor. Mount the contactor in the control panel. The control wires are long enough to reach the new contactor. I put a 2x4 box with cover in the blower compartment to connect the motor wires.

How do you know that it has a high leg ?
3 phase go each leg to ground. You should have 110v at each leg. If you get one leg that is 208 volts then that is your high leg. If you have that, you will have issues with the VFD.@@soulmpowered

i disconnected the vfd control voltage

The most common VFD is mitsubishi and Delta brand

Looked like your vfd had an enable signal wired. I think using that for your contactor coil would have made things a little more plug and play. Did you just not notice that or was there some other factor?

@@HVArctiC-Monkey yes usually 24 for an enable and 0-10 for any type of modulation signal
Do you have to do anything with the control board? I was able to get it to reset but I had an.STL3 failure on it. I know the parts not available locally.So I might have to end up doing the same thing.I just know the control board.Says vfd failure when it fails.So I didn't know if you had to do something to the computer or not
What if the Rtu is on EMS? Dont have thermostat terminals

Thanks for this video--it got me wondering about something I watched. I noticed quite a few HVAC units (3 phase rooftops) with VFD have contactors between it and the compressor(s) and I was wondering why. Old school when I did it, but a contactor between a VFD and its motor was a big no-no. If the motor is not always connected, features such as DC boost, soft starts, frequency ramping, etc. all or most of that is not available with a contactor in the circuit. Is the VFD limited in what it can do and needs a contactor? I watched an HVAC tech service a 3p Lennox rooftop on RUclips and I was confused. A VFD drove three compressors through three contactors. I am guessing that the VFD provides a bit of energy savings and possibly some monitoring, but little else?
The contractors are installed between the motor and VFD in case of failure to have a backup mode. This works fine for asynchronous 3 phase induction motors. If you have a BLDC motor, which is a synchronous 3 phase permanent magnet motor, you should run it from the vfd. It is not possible to run it just from the wall it may cause damage to the windings of the motor.

Dear Tad! What an incredible video. I live in South Florida and my VFD blew and my a/c tech told me they are on back order for months. My room is hot and I can not stand the heat. I have a trane variable speed 4TTV8036A1000BA. I understand what you did on this unit and wonder if I can do it on mine. I have not opened up the unit well but I wonder if it would fit the contactor within the space? Do you know this unit?

@@TaddyDigest yeah that’s weird, from my experience a lot of VFDs will go into “overcurrent” fault. This usually happens because the soft start up isn’t long enough, and can be fixed by increasing the ramp time on the VFD module programming
Great video man. I have a york that I can't get a replacement VFD on and york was telling me I needed and auxiliary relay on top of the contactor. So this was dope to see you just ran it to g and c on the UCB 🤘

It seems that York VFD’s lock out for no reason. No high leg issue and we have changed most of the York units over to a contactor. York does not have an answer for the issue so far that I am aware of. Just say to install a contactor. York units only so far. They are all on back order if you try to get a replacement. If there is any other info. Please share.

I doubt if that motor has internal protection ; protection is through the VFD so the contactor leaves it with no overload . An IEC style with an overload block would be much better even though it’s 250 vs 40 ; finding the problem ( probably high or unbalanced voltage ) would be lots better than treating the symptom. Had to do this in places where voltage was 480-490 and drive on smaller equipment was only configureed for 460. Not being negative , just practical.
what happens when the thermostat calls for heat?
Instead of changing setting on thermostat from gas to electric, could you have left it on gas and simply put a jumper between w and g?

A lot of T-stats, you can go in the installation setup and have the thermostat control the fan in heating mode opposed to having the unit control the fan in heating mode.

and then they turn the fan to continuous and the unit begins to heat... dont do the jumper

Shouldn't the fan run at about 25 hz when there is no call for cooling for fresh air requirements and when compressors come on in cooling mode the vfd should ramp up to 60hz i thought, with the contactor installed it appears to only turn the fan on in cooling mode.
What if there's no fresh air
@@TaddyDigest then I guess it would be off and then full throttle when it is on where I live they have I believe a 15 percent minimum outside air requirement for buildings it might be different in other areas I am working on a York rtu unit right now and I can't get the hz to change at all it is locked at 25hz I have power coming off the board and power at the Mitsubishi vfd that is in it when the cooling kicks in it doesn't ramp up to 60hz so I figure it's either the control board issue not telling the vfd to increase fan speed or an internal vfd problem have you ever had an issue like this before on a York rtu unit where the hz is locked on low speed.
I keep a 3/4 & 1 hp 230V blower motor, relay, cap for my 4 & 5 ton vs ah's.

Some times fvd fail cause the belt is too tigth or too loose. That is the situations that I have seen

Hold on. The thermostat doesn't send the signal in heat. That is done by the blower limit. You have to wire the relay in. Setting the stat to the electric heat, the blower shuts down immediately after the call for heat. Also, you gotta let the board know that it is single speed instead of vfd

What was wrong with the VFD? What error codes did it give you?
The problem was not with the vfd
The problem was with the control board
No error on vfd
error on SSE board was fan vfd failure
