Curated by Mapperton’s very own American Viscountess, Julie Montagu, the "American Heiress" collection is comprised of more than 10,000 previously unseen letters exchanged between Alberta (Sturges) Montagu and her family, as well as the peerage at large.
Dating from 1888 to 1951, these letters constitute the largest unpublished private collection of correspondence from the period. They offer a remarkable glimpse into the life of a "dollar bride" during the Gilded Age, shedding light on both triumphs and struggles.
The exhibition will explore Alberta's formative years in America, her upbringing in Chicago and New York, and the significance of her inheritance. Visitors will unravel the captivating courtship between Alberta and George Montagu, the future 9th Earl of Sandwich, leading to their marriage in 1905 in London. The narrative will culminate with her relocation to Hinchingbrooke House, the original family seat, in 1916 as the new Countess, following the death of the 8th Earl of Sandwich.
The exhibition takes innovation to the next level by introducing Alberta AI, a ground-breaking creation that brings her story to life like never before.

We spent 3 weeks touring Scotland last September. We visited many castles and manor houses, some in ruins, some not. Loved every minute there.
That would be my absolute DREAM vacation!
Ahhhhh thats nice,the Wee Big Country (Scotland) is really beautiful,I was really sad though to read that the Fairy Pools on the Isle of Skye have been damaged by the huge amount of tourists we get,I don't think people realise how small Scotland is and how tight the roads can be when they turn up in their huge Mobile homes,was reading about people who tried to go off roading I think and their tyres got wrecked oops

Oh my, I was just down a rabbit hole reading about the Campbell's. I was looking at things to do in St. Louis and found Campbell house (now a museum) since my grandmother was a Campbell born and raised in Northwest Tennessee in a small community called Lenox, TN. The rabbit hole led me all the way back to the Earl of Argyle. I love this YT channel and look forward to all you do.

I remember the fire at this castle! I was a junior in high school, and we watched the reports on the tele at school. My husbands best friend was a Campbell and we were all friends at that time. It was a very big deal to the Campbell family as they were direct relations. It was so very sad, and I am that glad to see the recovery all these years later.

The story of items being removed from the castle reminds me of stories from Windsor Castle and Notre Dame Cathedral. No time for proper removal, just get it out as quickly as possible.
The production quality of this episode is fantastic! Your camera operator is worthy of Oscar level awards! I remember reading about the fire back in 1975 and was horrified at the loss of centuries old treasures. Having watched the Downton Abbey episode, I recall seeing some of the rooms! What a legacy for the current duke and his duchess to leave to their children and the world! Julie, you are so fortunate to have the opportunity to showcase these magnificent homes with their current inhabitants! Beautifully done! Thank you for sharing with all of us who may never get to visit these homes in person!
I so amazed by how much history information these historical places have. How awesome it would be if at least some of these archives would be shared publicly. They are I understand personal family history but they would give so much insight to so much.

On my mother's side I am Clan Campbell. Her Ancestors Last name was not Campbell but were cousins moved from Scotland in the 1800's. They immigrated to Canada then to the Seattle area My Great Grandmother was first gen American. I love hearing how I am connected to so many people in the world. One of 14 million.

I was able to tour Inverary Castle in 1998. I first learned about the horrific fire only today, by watching this video.

Oh dear I thought the fire was recent. Yes we have been here. One of my fav castles along with balmoral. Interesting knowing the private appartments are round the corner from the offical entrance. Awesome inheritance, but massive responsibility.

In our modern world of technology, what types of items are archived? I love all of the letters that you have found and it makes me sad that no one really communicates that way today.
The letter you mentioned from Ian to Alberta about asking for contributions for the purchase of bells is really in line with how A Very British Scandal depicts Ian. Charm oozing from him where money is concerned. My guess is he was so charming and agreeable to Alberta (as she wrote in her letter to her husband) all in an effort to eventually get money from her (your) family.

What a fascinating return visit to Inveraray Castle! Loved your sit down chat with Their Graces, the tour of the attic and fire damaged areas, the back corridors and staircases, and the rooftop and signed tiles. Perchance there is one there with my Uncle Marvin Campbell's name on it! I am a member of the International Subcommittee of the Friends of the Argyll Papers and especially enjoyed the visit with Alison Diamond (our fearless leader) at Cherry Park. Loved your excitement concerning the preserved archives which mean so much to all of us! Ordinary people collectively doing small things to leave an extraordinary legacy to the generations to come. What an amazing history! I would love to go next year and see this wonderful castle. My ancestry has piqued my interest, and I would love to scope out some of the important estates in Scotland. I may not go back home! I am pretty sure Charles won't give me a key to a room in Holyrood House. LOL. Again, you showed the amazing spaces in this fairy tale castle. Nice work Julie!

In May of 1956 our school arranged a holiday to Scotland. We stayed at Minard castle which is very close to Inveraray castle. We spent the day at Inveraray castle and
We had our own tour guide who was none other than the 11th Duke of Argyll. As 10 year olds we were so impressed to have an actual Duke taking the time to show us round his beautiful castle. He was dressed in his Campbell tartan kilt. A day I have never forgotten.

I live in the United States. I remember seeing the fire on tv. I was in middle school.
I think this was on pbs series on castles. It showed their life, him running the daily work to be done, her working in a shop carrying products from their farm. It showed the fire and towns people helping rescue items.

I loved the servant staircase and love love love how they showed the attic with all the old furniture I felt like I was there and got emotional af, that was cool 🫶🏾 I was taught by a mother and daughter duo at primary school in New Zealand they are a quite well to do Campbells with big farms and good husbands in Awakeri, they are deffinately from this clan,I’ve always loved this castle since I saw Downton abbey and being a McCauley, a Māori of Scottish decent myself from New Zealand, we’re quite proud of our Scottish heritage and our link to the land of Scotland ❤

I visited inverary castle in the late 70’s ..sadly it was closed due to the fire. I finally got back there in 2022 and was so pleased to see it open and to be able to enjoy its beauty and splendor!
Am I mistaken or was this yellow living room featured in a movie with Cary Grant, Deborah Kerr and Robert Mitchum? The name of the film escapes me at the moment.
I was 21 when I visited the castle in Sept 1976 from the U.S. The family was offering brief tours, and the devastation was gut wrenching. Charred remnants of once beautiful furnishings and artwork lined the path. At the end of the tour there was a donation box and pieces of slate. A donation entitled you to scratch out a message on the slate that was to be used as the under layer of the new roof. Every time I see Inverary Castle I think of my wonderful time in Scotland, and smile at the knowledge that a tiny piece of me lives there and helped to restore it. ❤
At least the gods helped out in restoring it.
Thank you for sharing this amazing castle. I am presently writing a story with a Scottish theme and the Duke and the castle hold a prominent part of the story. And yes I got permission from the Duke to use his title for the fictional Duke and his family. I'm still hoping to get more information on the private rooms upstairs to add a bit of realism to the story. I look forward to more episodes of the Inveraray Castle show. BTW, way too many commercials in your presentation.
On my Mom's side is the Campbell clan. I haven't researched her side much yet. Did my Dad's side of Austin. Very interesting video. Thanks for sharing

This is an amazing episode. I love to see all of the history of these houses. I have always wanted to visit these types of houses. But I was a single mother so trips to these kind of places is not something I could afford. But now I am able to see them an no have to leave my house. I still hope to visit some of them someday. I saw this and decided to watch. I was on my honeymoon in 1973 at Taychreggan Hotel on the water's edge of Loch Awe at an old discontinued ferry point. Coming back from one of our day trips, driving up the single track road, we had a police car behind us with their blue lights on. We pulled over at a passing point. Behind that police car was a cavalcade of cars. Once we were back at the hotel we asked about all the cars. Why they were here. We were told the Duke of Argyll had asked that his ashes be scattered on the island in Loch Awe. On researching it would have been the 11th Duke of Argyll. I recall a seniour lady having tea with a young girl, I believe she said it was her granddaughter? She asked me if I was related to the family as my smile was very much like a few family members.
I had to pull out my photo album to see when my 1st marriage was and if my recollection was correct. I also had to research to see if there was a Duke of Argyll who died that year and had his ashes scattered on an island in Loch Awe. Sure enough I found this:
'While most dukes and duchesses of Argyll are buried at Kilmun Parish Church, Ian Campbell and his son, the 12th duke, both chose to be buried on the island of Inishail in Loch Awe.' From Wikipedia.
We did tour the castle during our stay at Taychreggan Hotel. That would have been 2 years before the fire at the castle.

My husband Danny ( Da nny) ( I was being a bit funny showing how the sound is there with Eon, as the name Danny ends with the 'long e ' sound! lol_ ) has ancestors named 'Campbell of Scotland, ' on his mom's side of family.(He has family in Ireland too) But' also he is related to Royal family of England,' as well.* Somehow this all ties together! * and it is down in writing, but would need to go look at his thousands that are written down in this ancestral tree) It would take time. I just cannot remember it all. But with the Elish Riyal ist does come right down straight in line and the name Campbell name is written right out clearly, It is very interesting how many are related in this world ( as we live in America!)
I love seeing these lovely and historical Castles, and it is terrible about the fire. I know that so much is lost when a fire is happening to anyone, but when it is a historical place and antiques are concerned , it is worse, but people's lives lost is just beyond words. I think it is wonderful so many could help!
I got such enjoyment hearing how Duke Campbell and his sister would be able to climb all the way to the roof and look at the visitors and then pretend to fall down! lol So cute. But when looking through the various areas and into the one cabinet in hall showing the St Nicholas outfits etc and then the lovely skirt his wife once wore in the portrait , he wanted to show it so adly and could not resist, but was afraid that is wife would "Kill him' He is the Duke!! lol But that is very good really and important, as I like my husband to realize he is not as supeiror as he may think, lol He certainly can think it at moments, but in the end he truly knows I can have my own ideas too. They can be made quite clearly too when needed. We have been married quite a long time now, so enjoyed this so much. They are very down to earth, and they both just explained so much and he sure lived through a hard time during the fire and restoration,
Julie, thank you for all you and family are doing, and it is also so nice all people are able to enjoy visiting castles like this but also it is so hard now to keep them going and just not as it used to be, and so know it also is help in this way. It is wonderful people today are taking such love nad pride enough to keep their castles going and working in all wys to allow them to be aliv and well for the future!

I am sorry when any great building is damaged to that extent. Once gone, that castle will never be rebuilt. It would be too expensive for anyone to salvage it.
